Whitedot skis combine innovative shapes with the latest materials to give you the best possible equipment for enjoying all types of terrain. We don’t make hundreds of models and shapes, simply because our approach to ski manufacture is to create a small range of skis with quality materials and construction to work in all conditions. Through rider testing at the extremes of our sport, we gain a deep understanding of how each ski works in all mountain environments. In essence, we work extremely hard to find a perfect balance between skiers, materials and the environment.

WD. That’s a serious trick to land Mani, Switch-Double

12’s are very technical, how do you go about visualising

and training for spins like that?

ME. It wasn’t switch, it was only a normal Double-Flat spin

12! You know how I do my Flat 720 Nosegrab to Japan?

It kind of feels the same only completely different! Training

for it is mostly on the trampoline but for this specific trick

you are not able to try it on a trampoline because you

need to use the pop in your ski’s on the take off. I have

thought about that trick for a long time then the day came

up, and I just did it! Looked pretty good until I found out

that I had too much rotation and not enough flip in it,

once I spotted the landing there was no more landing left!

Well to cut a long story short, I did a 1¾ Flat spin 16,

then landed switch with my body facing forward and my

knee just gave up.

WD. Working as part of the “Vans Penken Park” crew

must have been interesting, what was it like using the

creativity from your skiing to build features for such high

profile events such as the “Mayrhofen Open” and “Wängl

Tängl?”

Spending time out from our busy production and testing

schedule, Whitedot has managed to pin factory rider and

Austrian freeskier Manuel “Mani” Eder down for a few

questions at his local mountain deep in the Tyrol. Known

as one of the skiers pushing the style and innovation in

todays sport, Mani found time in his busy schedule of

product testing, injury re-hab and holding down the job

of head shaper in the Million Euro “Vans Penken Park” in

Mayrhofen to answer a few questions with us.”

WD. So Mani, last season must have been a hard one

for you as you spent some time injured and it meant you

couldn’t compete, how did it all turn out in the end?

ME. Well, I was injured last season because I had a real

bad meniscus injury. I was trying a new trick, a Double-Flat

spin 12. Anyway, I had no chance to compete in events

so I chose to focus on other things like my family and to

get better ASAP. I did a little bit of easy skiing to get some

pictures and media captured; that was the least I could

do for my sponsors like Whitedot, and once I felt better I

did some filming but that was already well into the Spring.

After the season I had a huge set back but I am getting

stronger and stronger. I have been on the trampoline all

summer at least three times a week, I’ve got some new

tricks done and I have taken some of them to the snow

already.

ME. That’s not hard for me to remember, it was the

summer of 2004 when my school friend came up to me

and told me, “man I just got a ski movie” and I asked him

what he was up to!

You know, back then my friend and I were the cool kids;

snowboarding, doing 360’s and Indy grabs! Anyways, after

school we met up and watched the movie, It was called

Yearbook. I played it cool and told him everything looked

wrong and asked him if I could borrow it for a few days

so I can have another, closer look at what they do. Long

story short I watched it about 30 times in two days! It

was the best movie I have ever seen and so much cooler

than snowboarding. The one segment that still sticks in my

head is Tanner Hall’s part; love the song, love the grabs, it’s

just all about good skiing. I would say this would be it, the

segment I could watch for the rest of my life.

ME. You know Paul, all I wanna do is to build a park for

the riders to remember. If it was totally up to me, the

Park in Mayrhofen would not look any different. This year is

going to be great yet because I really will be able to build

a part of it the way I want. Headshaper...yesss sir! To build

features like we had for the Wängl Tängl is a very cool

experience, we usually get our plan in a 1.100 scale and

then try to make it the exact way it was planned to be, but

we are also able to give them better ideas in the process.

The Freeski Open is super cool because they say, look, we

want a sick slopestyle run with some of the best features

we can build out of snow.

We sit down and think about what would make a big

name for the Park and what works for the rider. Then

that is when I usually come to check it all out and if it

is possible to ride. That’s what I do when I’m not with

my family or skiing. Build one of the biggest and best

Snowparks in Europe.

WD. Well, since you’ve been with the Whitedot family

you’ve skied in several well known ski destinations and

some amazing freestyle mecca’s, including snowpark in

NZ, have you taken any inspiration from these areas and

tried to bring them back home and why did you decide to

settle down in Mayrhofen?”

ME. The inspiration I got was different each time I went

overseas, I have met some of my best friends there. To ski

in places like SnowPark, NZ was great, you get to ski with

the best of the best and you can take away a lot of new

tricks because everyone pushes each other so hard. What I

took with me from skiing in such places is respect, fun and

a lot of skills I am able transfer and use over here as well.

I also took away with me how to build a great park and

how to maintain it as a good shaper. I have not decided to

settle here in Mayrhofen, though for the time being I am

more than happy I had to stay. I have met my future wife

and I have got a little family over here.

WD. So, now for the tough one; I remember you telling

me years ago that you were inspired to change from

snowboarding to skiing after watching “Yearbook”, if you

could only watch one ski segment for the rest of your life

what would it be?

TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT,I DID 1¾ OF A FLAT SPIN 1600 THEN LANDED SWITCH WITH MY BODY FACING FORWARD AND MY KNEE JUST GAVE UP!

SKI PREACHER CARBONLITE 179cm

FROM LOOMTO COULOIR

AS SKI DESIGNERS WE THINK A LOT ABOUT HOW OUR

SKIS WILL INTERACT WITH THE MOUNTAIN BOTH FOR

OUR EVERYDAY CUSTOMER AND ALSO OUR PRO-TEAM

Often, this time is spent thinking about shapes, cambers and flex - less so about the materials which we put into the skis to deliver torsional stiffness and endurance.

Last winter we made a deliberate effort to push this element of design to ever y new challenge we took on and reflect on improvements to the skis we already produce. Taking this approach has added a third dimension to our conceptual development skis and will take Whitedot into its next generation of skis .

From the work we started last winter, we immediately found that the combination of Fibreglass and ABS dampening could be replaced (in full or part) by Carbon Kevlar/Aramid and Flax to deliver torsional stiffness and endurance whilst dramatically saving weight. This combination of retaining a Poplar/Ash wood core while innovating with these materials allowed Whitedot to release a Limited Edition Redeemer CarbonLite to our distr ibutors, retailers and community and has resulted in a ‘sell out’ ski before first snowfall in 2013!

Although, Carbon Kevlar (and to a lesser degree, Carbon Aramid) have been much used in recent years as a strong weight saving ‘high tech’ composite material; it is the addition of ‘Flax’ which we have found the most innovative material to use in combination. Ironically, Flax has been spun across industr ial Europe since the 19th centur y. For application in skis , Whitedot has proven that its dampening properties perfectly balance the composites. It provides a structure to which when formed against wood and Carbon Kevlar/Aramid has a strong natural feel and performance.

PHOTO © WHITEDOT SKIS LTD

SKI RANGER CARBONLITE 177cm

And to further endorse Flax, it is an organic material and environmentally fits with our locally sourced wood cores and recycling attitude to our production facility.

Buoyed on by the success of the Redeemer CarbonLite, we have spent the November testing period in bringing the CarbonLite lay-up to the Preacher, Director, Ragnarok and our new all-access freeride ski - The Ranger. All passed their initial tests and bar some minor adjustments over the pre-production period they will be ready to be launched as a full CarbonLite series of skis .

So for next winter (13/14), Whitedot will have two ranges of skis in production: our factor y series (wood/fibeglass/carbon str inger) and the CarbonLite series (wood/Carbon Kevlar/Aramid and Flax).

The standard range will continue to deliver great performance and weigh between 2.0kgs to 2.7 kgs per ski depending on model and height. The CarbonLite range will weigh between 1.6-2.2kgs per ski depending on model and height. The CarbonLite range not only brings a weight-saving gain but also it br ings a torsional stiffness and durability which is unmatched by Fibreglass setups. In Fibreglass setups, the weave of the glass will break up over time and stressing - hence a ski loses its camber and feel over the seasons.

Finally, with the launch of the new Whitedot ski - The Ranger, we expect that we will need to keep pushing the freeride backcountr y aspect of our ski range, we will inevitably be hunting for a way of further developing an UltraLite variant!

IMAGE FLAX ON SPINDLE

PHOTO © AIDAN BOLGER SKIER STEVE WALTON

We ensure our range of skis has a ver y clear purpose – To make all corners of the mountain accessible to all skiers. Within this vision each ski has its own role, whether that be to take a good on-piste skier into the backcountr y for the first time or give an accomplished freeride skier the tools to go that bit further with their skiing, say to charge down a powder field or master a tricky couloir.

Innovative ski design and development is a crucial factor in the sur vival of an independent ski manufacturer. In an industr y that is changing fast, we feel we must continually better our designs and range of products.

Through dedicated research, development and testing by our pro-riders, we have created a range of skis that is unique in comparison with anything on the mountain today.

As a growing brand, we still have the time to listen to our riders and customers and we are able to take ideas and turn them into working skis without constraint. If you happen to see someone skiing a Whitedot ski with the name ‘Proto’, then you are not only witnessing a Whitedot evolution, but Whitedot listening.

Whitedot began with one aim in mind - develop the perfect range of freeride skis. Eventually those dreams and ideas became reality when designs took shape and prototypes manufactured. The initial couple of skis, which eventually became the Preacher and the Redeemer, took shape.

Research and development led to a retail effort in Scandinavia, in collaboration with Fred Syversen. The initial success saw the company expand working alongside its established and growing network of distributors across the world.

Our pro-athletes success has grown along with the brand; international competition success for Eva Walkner and Dennis Risvoll as well as first descents of world famous couloirs by sponsored ambassadors such as Stefano Bigio.

The range of skis has matured on a performance level and with a technology focus future, we are proud to be launching the new CarbonLite series of Whitedot skis.

We, at Whitedot, strive to build our skis using our values; Purity of Purpose, Clarity of Design, Reliable Performance, Innovative Technology.

As your turn progresses, RC allows you to slide through it

smoothly and with less strain and chatter than you’re used

to feeling with traditional camber skis.

And finally, as you move through the apex of your turn, a

bit of tail rocker will allow you to bleed off speed and set

up for the rest of your line. If you’ve ever been impressed

by footage of a snowboarder ripping steep powder with

smooth, sliding turns... that’s what it feels like to ski on

reverse camber. Personally, one of my favorite things

about the Redeemers is that almost no matter how fast

I am going in soft snow, I am confident that I’ll be able

to immediately initiate a turn and slide off my speed, or

make any small direction change, with ease and control.

RC allows me to ski faster in soft and variable snow

conditions with less effort than before.

But wait, you’re thinking, in hard snow RC is scary and

bad, right? That’s where the Whitedot design team has

truly excelled. Our RC ski designs all incorporate an ideal

amount of effective edge, with traditional sidecut underfoot.

With race-quality construction and the perfect amount of

sidecut in each design, Whitedot skis shred hard snow and

bite into the steeps better than anything else out there.

Overall, reverse camber is about increasing the versatility

of your skis, and your skiing. It’s an invaluable tool for the

constant variety of snow that we experience as avid free

skiers in today’s big mountain environment.

I grew up skiing in the 1980s and 1990s, as the sport

transitioned from something cool (“Hotdog”), to something

lame (thanks, Snowboarding), and at the time we never

could have imagined how much ski technology would

progress and in 1998 when I rode fat skis for the first

time, my brain practically exploded.

There is no question that fat skis (and twin-tips)

revolutionized our sport and made it better for everyone.

These days, fat skis are taken for granted and everyone

knows that a little extra width underfoot makes things

easier and more fun. So why is it that everyone doesn’t

“know” about reverse camber? Reverse camber (RC), in

my opinion, is every bit as revolutionary as fatness was,

and RC has been around now for 10 years already . So

why don’t you own a pair yet?

Your first few moments on reverse camber skis can be

slightly unsettling, and many skiers have demoed a pair

of them and walked away thinking that they weren’t the

right choice. But I genuinely believe that every serious skier

needs a pair of RC skis in their quiver, and any ski that will

venture off-piste needs a least a bit of rocker.

Reverse camber, simply put, makes skiing in soft snow

easier and more fun. As you initiate your turn, tip rocker

creates a smoother and more manageable connection

with the snow, creating an effortless and smooth feel.

Innovative Core MaterialsAn UltraLite Possibility?

The aim is to build on the CarbonLite success and substitute core materials to develop a UltraLite capability to insert into skis such as the Ranger. Freeride touring is pushing new boundaries and performance across skis , bindings and boots. The UltraLite concept will be a key component to Whitedot’s freeride

tour offer ing.

Proto VII“The Daily Driver”

Whitedot up to now has focused its RND on skis which sit in the ‘competition’ end of the freeride spectrum. We wanted to take the knowledge gained and produce a more accessible freeride ski (currently the waist for this ski is at 99mm, tip rocker, 20-25m turn radius). This will be exciting for those skiers who want a more ‘tour’ fr iendly ski or those who venture onto the mountain on a less regular basis . In short, opening the Whitedot

brand to a wider variety of skiers.

Freestyle RangePark:One - Rockered:One

The One, Whitedot’s all-mountain freestyle ski, is undergoing a re-work. With the introduction of the Proto VII ‘daily driver’, the One can be made more freestyle specific - i.e. soften the flex and adjust the core profile. And finally, a rockered freestyle ski will also be added, bringing a different dimension and complementing a growing genre of Whitedot’s

product range.
