The critically endangered White Lion has been naturally birthed in one place only - the Timbavati region of South Africa.

• In legends: children of the Sun God, sent to earth as gifts

• First recorded in 1928

They are not albinos, having normal pigmentation (natural colour) in the eyes and skin. The unusual cream color of their coats is due to a recessive gene (passed to children from their parents only if both parents have the gene).

• An easy and an attractive target for hunters

• Killed by poachers• Extinct in the wild since 1994• In 2004 only 30 were alive
