White LionsWhite Lions
The critically endangered White Lion has been naturally birthed in one place only - the Timbavati region of South Africa.
• In legends: children of the Sun God, sent to earth as gifts
• First recorded in 1928
They are not albinos, having normal pigmentation (natural colour) in the eyes and skin. The unusual cream color of their coats is due to a recessive gene (passed to children from their parents only if both parents have the gene).
• An easy and an attractive target for hunters
• Killed by poachers• Extinct in the wild since 1994• In 2004 only 30 were alive
• Deliberately bred for colour in zoos• No law protecting white lions from
complete extinction
• Restore the natural biodiversity of the area(Timbavati region, South Africa)
• Provide long-term economic benefits to the local community
• Promote conservation awareness• The White Lion Eco-Educational Program
with local schools
