D We just had to build a no-holds-barred killer The Honda ATC200X was our candidate; it oozes with potential It has mushman suspen­sion but a pleasant motor and is a gas to ride. Just imagine gobs more power, a stretched-out chassis, and suspension that would suck up a Grand Canyon hill Our minds reeled . .. .

A call was placed to the White Bros. Yes, they'd be happy to go mongo nuts on our 200X. We envisioned a kind of Baja Cross ma­chine. More motor was critical Just as impor­tant was the rear suspension: It must be able to track and absorb hits at speed. In stock trim the 200X fails miserably here. Yes, it's cushy, but that's the limit. The brothers White said to leave it to them. We did.

PULLING OUT THE STOPS They took out the engine and did a major on

it. First, a 12-to-l Wiseco piston kit was installed. The 66mm piston brought the bore up to 198cc. A White Bros. titanium valve spring kit was fitted along with a WB racing cam. The

Our White Bros. 200X received a complete transfusion. The engine went on a fUll-tilt Nautilus program; a new shock, wider axle, low-profile rubber, and sano WB swingarm provided the final touches.

Our 200 throbs with a potent and usable powerband. It snaps off the bottom with a vengeance and cranks into atmospheric upper revs like a demon. ~

HONDA200X head was ported and flowed, and the valve seat and springs were ground and packed.

A 28mm flat-slide carb kit was installed, and a WE twist throttle setup replaced the standard thumb model. Two filters were mounted, one for the oil blow-off line and a large K&N c1amp­on air filter. White Bros. slipped on a Megalloy racing exhaust system to cap off the big engine mods.

A sana Derale oil cooler was popped on, and the front fender was slotted for increased airflow to the cooler. A trick oil· temperature gauge screwed into the oil filler cap, and a fold­ing shifter and case saver were installed.

- STORMIN' THE CHASSIS A beautiful White Bros. two-inches-longer­

than-stock aluminum swingarm was snugged into place. The stock shock was tossed in favor of a White Power Super Adjuster shock. The final ingredient for stability was the Dura Blue axle. A four-inch-wider-than-stock unit was chosen along with Mitchell 3 X 5 offset wheels and Armstrong Multi Trac tires.

For reliability a Tsubaki chain replaced the stockitem. Trick fork guards were mounted up front along with a Terry fork kit. Lastly, a reser­voir guard was bolted onto the front brake.

ENOUGH, HOW'S IT WORK? You can feel the added compression when

the kickstarter is stabbed. Our 200 fired up on the second prod and belched out a healthy

White B;os. mounted a White Power Super Adjuster shock which proved to be a major force in taming evil landscape. A K&N filter, WB throttle kit and front br(jke reser­voir guard cap off the package. The fork guards and front numberplate are practical as well as aesthetically pleasing. It oozes raw energy. ~

·Though the engine appears timid on the outside, a caged dragon lurks within. White Bros. implanted a racing cam, trick valves and springs, a high-compression piston and a 28mm Mikuni on the 200. Up front, a Dera/e oil cooler keeps the temper­ature down, and a thermometer is screwed into the oil filler cap so you can keep an eye on the heat. Check out the drilled front fender-trick.

We tortured our 200X with relentless air shots. The added power during liftoff com­bined with a leaner, race-bred chassis made it perfect for aerial attacks. In the air it's as light and nimble as a glider.

The first sweeper was attacked crazily. We slammed down the throttle and dangled off the side of the 200X. The rear danced sideways, and we held a perfect slide around the entire turn. The engine felt menacing; it was nudged into a higher gear The Honda bolted skyward as healthy chunks of real estate blew off the rear tires. '

With a wider stance (thanks to a four-inch-wider Dura Blue axle and offset Mitchell wheels laced with Armstrong tires to keep a grip on things), it's all business. The WB aluminum swingarm is two inches longer than stock and is a work of art. A super-strong Tsubaki chain handles the added boost of the engine. The mega­phone is a White Bros. down. We hunched down and shot off the top of the mountain like an Olympic ski jumper. The landing would tell the story about the sus­pension mods. As the rear wheels touched down, the expected crunch of an overstressed shock never happened. The fourth-gear vault was soaked up with ease.

BOTTOM-LINE TIME The White Bros. built a 200X that bubbles

with horsepower and flattens ugly terrain like a bulldozer. It's a racer all the }Nay, although the power is ridable and torquey. There is tons of boost on tap, and once the upper revs are reached, things really start to happen-fast. Our 200 has been flogged mercilessly since the White Bros. kitted it. We haven't touched a wrench and have had no blown head gaskets or lunched engines. It's as reliable as a tractor.
