BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Francis J. Whitaker, known as Brother Thomas Whitaker, was born on 23 May 1916 in Bear Lake, Minnesota. He attended public school there and later matriculated at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, where he received a bachelor’s degree in history. He became a novice at St. John’s Abbey, taking his first vows on 26 December 1941. In 1954, Brother Thomas was sent to live at one of St. John’s missions, St. Maur’s Priory at South Union, Kentucky. There he served as librarian for the school of theology and assistant procurator for the Priory. After serving several years as substitute postmaster at South Union, he was appointed postmaster in 1971 and held that position until 1987. When St. Maur’s was closed at South Union in 1988, Brother Thomas and three other monks from Kentucky were received at St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama. Brother Thomas always enjoyed a keen interest in local history. This served him well at South Union, where he became captivated by the history of the Shaker community that had once occupied the Priory site. His research about the Shakers resulted in several published scholarly articles, newspaper articles, and conference presentations about the South Union colony, as well as this amassed collection of Shaker research. Brother Thomas died on 15 January 1994. COLLECTION NOTE
