Welcome to the Eighth Annual Mad Hot Ballroom Gala, benefiting The Whistle Stop’s Dancing Classrooms and DanceSport programs. Local celebrities, paired with experienced dancers, will perform in hopes of earning the coveted First Place Mirror Ball Trophy and equally prized People’s Choice Award. Tonight’s performances are the result of hard work, discipline, and determination from everyone involved.
It all began in 2009 when Nancy Vallee, director of The Whistle Stop, invited us to watch a ballroom dance exhibition by some of the participating 5th grade
students. We were instantly on board when she asked if we would chair a fundraiser for her beloved Dancing Classrooms. Having recently competed in a fundraising event similar to Dancing with the Stars, it was very humbling to see the poise and grace of these young dancers. We went to work with Melinda Lemke and together, we came up with a plan. It was a bumpy road and a “learn-as-we-go” experience. Nine months later, we had a successful first Mad Hot Ballroom Gala and competition.
Each year, the gala increases awareness; attendance; and most of all, funding for The Whistle Stop. Our professional dancers help make this a life changing journey for our celebrities. Every year, the couples work harder and raise the bar to make this event the success that it is.
Dancing Classrooms is an in-school program that uses ballroom dance to teach respect, instill confidence, and develop interpersonal skills to support a successful future. We have seen many students continue their ballroom training in the advanced competitive program, DanceSport. DanceSport is now offered in both middle schools and high schools.
On behalf of The Whistle Stop, we wholeheartedly thank all of our sponsors who made tonight’s gala possible. We also thank the gala volunteers for their hard work and selfless dedication. Professional dancers, celebrities, emcees, administrators, producers and directors of the show continue to volunteer their time to bring you this wonderful evening.
Finally, thank you for joining us this evening. Please sit back, enjoy the show, and VOTE! We look forward to seeing you on the dance floor after the competition. Our “talent scouts” will be searching for potential 2018 celebrity dancers.

Whistle Stop Building “Life Champions”
The Whistle Stop’s mission is to enhance the lives of chil-dren by helping them reach their full potential. We provide two programs, Dancing Classrooms and DanceSport, both of which use ballroom dance as the tool to achieve this goal. Dancing Classrooms, a distinctively rich and life-enhancing experience, uses the joy and discipline of social dance to give all 5th grade children the key social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral skills needed to succeed in school and in life.
The 10-week program uses ballroom dance to transform children into self-assured, elegant, and motivated team players who exhibit pride in themselves and respect for peers. The program improves self-control, focus, and perseverance. The change is infectious—Dancing Classrooms students blossom and grow and are seen in a new light as positive relationships with their parents and teachers develop.
The Whistle Stop’s DanceSport program develops competitive Ballroom Dance teams in middle and high schools. By combining sport and dance, participants improve physical fitness and mental wellbeing, form social relationships, and acquire begin- ner-level competitive dance achievements. DanceSport also helps students qualify for college scholarships throughout the country at some of the nation’s top universi- ties, including Louisiana State University.
The highlight of the DanceSport program is the DanceSport Challenge, a statewide competition that attracts youth dancers from all regions of Louisiana and throughout the south. The event is co-sponsored by McDonalds and our USADance Youth Chap-ter 5057 and is a registered USADance competition (USADance is also a Member Organization of the US Olympic Committee and the World DanceSport Federation). Dancers compete in American style dance at all skill levels for trophies, medals, rib-bons, and prize money for their school.
The ladies and gentlemen in our Academy program, those who have been with us for 3-6 years, are amazing individuals. They are polite, poised, and comfortable in all social settings. They are skilled at engaging adults in conversation and handling interviews for any college or job opportunity that comes their way. The attributes and skills developed in our DanceSport programs highlight the goals we have been working toward for years: the building of Champions—in dance and in life.

Dancing Classrooms Colors of the Rainbow Team Match SWLA 2017 The Dancing Classrooms program was launched in 1994 by world-renowned ballroom dancers Pierre Dulaine and Yvonne Marceau as a not-for-profit project of the American Ballroom Theater Company. An arts-in-education/life-skills program, Dancing Classrooms uses ballroom dance to build social awareness, confidence and self-esteem in children. Dancing Classrooms residencies are integrated into the school day; 5th grade students meet with their Teaching Artist twice a week for ten weeks. The program utilizes a syllabus of ballroom dance that nurtures mastery of an art form in a fun learning environment while fostering respect, teamwork, confidence, politeness, and a sense of joy and accomplishment. Essentially, it "teaches life skills wrapped up in ballroom dance."

“Our teaching philosophy is one of inside-out versus outside-in. The program is not just about teaching dance, it’s about teaching pride, confidence and respect. We take the dance that is inherent in students’ bodies and help them to bring it out, not force it in, enabling students to increase their self-esteem as they learn.” Pierre Dulaine
As a special activity, each school in the Dancing Classrooms program has the option to participate in a city-wide team match, the Colors of the Rainbow. At the close of each course, students audition to participate and twelve students advance to the competition. The schools are identified by colors, with ladies wearing colored sashes and the gentlemen wearing colored cards pinned to their backs.

Adam JohnsonAdam grew up in Moss Bluff, cruising Ryan Street and blaring Kris Kross. After graduating from Sam Houston High School, he obtained an undergraduate degree from LSU, followed by a Juris Doctor from Southern. While at LSU, he traded his fraternity dues for a motorcycle and a Members Only jacket, but this was short-lived. Nonetheless, it’s evidence of an adventurous spirit, coupled with occasional poor decision-making.
Adam ultimately found the love of his life, Ashley, behind the bar at Walk-Ons. They have two very cute sons, Jack and James.
He practices law with his dad Terry and brother Jonathan.
You’ll often see crowds gather outside the courthouse when news spreads he has successfully channeled his inner Matlock and exonerated a client - this is when he shines bright like a diamond, has moves like Jagger, and performs a highly technical “happy dance.”
Emily Porché Emily was born and raised in Lake Charles. She graduated from Barbe High School and McNeese State University, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Currently, Emily is the Event Manager at the Burton Coliseum Complex, where she schedules, coordinates and manages events and acts as the main contact for anyone interested in renting any of the facilities. Emily serves on the board of Arts and Humanities Council as the 2nd Vice President.
Emily has been dancing since she was 7 years old and was a dance instructor at Tammy Palmer’s Center Stage for several years. She is married to Cody Porché, owner of Porché Aerial Imagery.

Lake Charles 2017DanceSport Challenge is a competition for all students participating in our DanceSport or Dancing Classrooms programs. They compete for medals and ribbons and win “DanceSport Bucks” to support their school’s program. It is a celebration of every dancer’s success!
Barbe Student: “In the beginning, I didn’t think I would like it because I was afraid I wouldn’t get any of the steps right. However, it is an adventure. I’ve met new people that respect me. The coach is very diligent but he is very caring and makes sure you have it. He encourages all of us to be great! The team is incredible. We enjoy each other’s company and we encourage each other when we are down. At the beginning, I was afraid no one would like me or I would not make friends. The opposite happened. I made life-long friends.”
