    Whisky: The History

    1100 1300 Distillation brought to from Italy to Ireland &

    Scotland by monks

    Since wine was not easily obtained in Ireland andScotland, barley beer was distilled into liquor which

    (UK), which clarified the Scotch Whisky Act

    of 19881. must be distilled at a Scottish distillery.

    three years plus one day.

    4. must be distilled at less than 94.8% alcohol by volume andbe bottled at more than 40% alcohol by volume (NOT less

    1. Single malt / grain:All the malt/grain whisky in the bottle is from one distillery.

    E.g. GlenFiddich, Talisker, Lagavulin.

    The malt/grain whisky in the bottle is from two or more

    different malts/grains and different distilleries.

    A blended scotch contains a combination of malt and grain

    whiskies of various ages from different distilleries. e.g.

    Johnnie Walker, J&B, Famous Grouse.

    The stated age of a Blend refers to the age of the

    youngest malt or grain whisky in the blend.

    According to Irish Whiskey Act of 19801. must be distilled and aged in the Republic of Ireland

    production.
