There are dramas for people who love murder myster-ies, cop shows and even comic books, but a unique

drama offers viewers something totally new, with elaborate fight scenes and stunning visuals.

Chinese-American action star Daniel Wu (“Gen-X Cops,” 1999) brings his talents to the small screen as Sunny, a fiercely skilled warrior in AMC’s martial arts dra-ma “Into the Badlands,” which returns for a second season Sun-day, March 19. The show is set in a post-apocalyptic world where guns have been banned and sev-en ruthless barons rule what was once the American midwest, thanks to loyal warriors, or clip-pers, like Sunny.

One of the most dangerous clippers in the Badlands, Sunny has worked his way up through the ranks to become regent (head clipper) to the area’s most power-ful Baron, Quinn (Marton Csokas, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fel-lowship of the Ring,” 2001). In the first season, Sunny encoun-tered a teenager, M.K. (Aramis Knight, “Ender’s Game,” 2013), who harbored a dark power, prompting Sunny to take M.K. un-der his wing as his newest trainee, or “colt,” as they’re called in the Badlands.

“Into the Badlands” was a hit right out of the gate when the se-ries premiere in November 2015 pulled in more than 6.4 million viewers overall. The show went on to average more than five million viewers per episode, earning it the distinction of being the fourth-highest-rated freshman season of any cable series ever. Not surpris-ingly, it didn’t take long for AMC to order a second season.

“With its deep dive into au-thentic martial arts, the visually stunning ‘Into the Badlands’ proved to be unlike anything else on television,” said AMC execu-tive Charlie Collier when the 10-episode season 2 deal was an-nounced last March. He went on to praise creators Alfred Gough (“Smallville”) and Miles Millar (“Shanghai Noon,” 2000) for de-livering an “artfully crafted se-ries.”

Acclaimed for its elaborate combat scenes and swordplay in

season 1, “Into the Badlands” is expected to be even more action-packed in season 2 as Sunny — now separated from M.K. — struggles to get back to the Bad-lands and his family. Meanwhile, M.K. struggles to get a handle on his powers. Mysterious new allies aid the clipper and colt, but these so-called friends may have ulteri-or motives. At the same time, dan-gerous baron Minerva (Emily Bee-cham, “The Village”), also known as The Widow, continues her quest for more power. All the while, a new threat rises.

Production moved from Louisi-ana to just outside Dublin, Ire-land, for season 2, giving the se-

ries an even more distinctive look. And that isn’t all that’s new this season: Nick Frost (“Shaun of the Dead,” 2004) has been added to the cast as a series regular, play-ing Sunny’s new ally, Bajie, a man of “questionable morals” who gets stuck in a mining prison along with Sunny.

All of the fan favorites from last season are back for the new season, too. In addition to Wu, Knight and Beecham, Oliver Stark (“Underworld: Blood Wars,” 2016) reprises his role as Ryder, Quinn’s son and newly minted baron. Stephen Lang (“Avatar,” 2009) returns as Waldo, a once-great clipper who buys into The

Widow’s promise to reform the Badlands.

Ally Ioannides (“Parenthood”) continues the tradition of “Into the Badlands’s” powerful female characters as Tilda, The Widow’s devoted teenage daughter and deadly regent. Orla Brady (“Mis-tresses”) is Lydia, Quinn’s first wife, who now finds herself a re-luctant member of Penrith’s (Lance Henriksen, “Aliens,” 1986) Totemist commune. Meanwhile, Sarah Bolger (“Once Upon a Time”) stars as Ryder’s new wife, Jade. Madeleine Mantock (“The Tomorrow People”) plays Veil, Sunny’s lover and the mother of his newborn child.

Both male and female charac-ters get to partake in the fast-paced fight scenes that make “Into the Badlands” one of this season’s most buzzworthy shows. While Wu has an extensive back-ground in martial arts, having trained in wushu since the age of 11, many of the show’s other stars didn’t have martial arts training before they landed the “Into the Badlands” gig. The actors undergo intense training to make the scenes look as real as possible, thanks to the guidance of martial arts choreography Master Dee Dee Ku, who’s helped actors pre-pare for such films as “Fist of Leg-end” (1994), “Crouching Tiger,

Hidden Dragon” (2000) and “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” (2003). Before filming even began, the performers trained six hours a day for weeks on end to learn about basic kung fu choreography, weapons and more. Executive producer Stephen Fung (“House of Fury,” 2005) also serves as the fight director.

AMC’s action drama won’t just appeal to martial arts fans — there’s plenty of intrigue, sus-pense and stellar performances, not to mention a visually stunning post-apocalyptic world to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Confession time: I love cheese more than is probably reasonable. How could I not? There

are so many varieties, each with its own unique aroma, with tex-tures ranging from creamy to crumbly and tastes that run the gamut from nutty to sharp to smooth and to mild.

Well, it looks like Food Net-work’s five perennially sunny Saturday morning personalities can agree with me about this one, with the Saturday, March 25, episode of “The Kitchen” fo-cusing entirely on the good stuff: cheese. The weekly talk pro-gram’s hosts are almost too cheerful sometimes, but that’s exactly what makes it such great weekend television.

As part of their celebration of all things cheese, “The Kitch-en’s” hosts share some of their favorite cheesy recipes. Jeff Mauro’s (“Sandwich King”) ulti-mate cheese enchiladas are something to make family Mexi-

can night anything but dull, while Sunny Anderson (“Cooking for Real”) shows off her secrets for making perfect cheesy cornbread muffins with jalapeño glaze. Even actor/chef David Burtka (“How I Met Your Mother”) stops by to share one of his cheese-covered favorites: a four-cheese pizza that’s better than anything you can get from the local pizza joint.

In this kitchen, though, it’s not just about sharing recipes and cooking tips: food and fun always go hand in hand, and remaining hosts Geoffrey Zakarian (“Iron Chef”), Katie Lee (“Beach Bites With Katie Lee”) and Marcela Val-ladolid (“Mexican Made Easy”) aren’t about to let this Saturday be a dull one.

Together, all five hosts take the classic grilled cheese sand-wich to the next level for what will no doubt become the next Olympic sport: a stringy and melty grilled cheese pull con-test! The kitchen helpline is also open to help out viewers with their cheesiest questions, and there’s so much more planned as well.

“The Kitchen” is currently in its 12th season, and if there’s one thing that’s helped it stand out in a crowded talk show landscape, it’s the warmth and chemistry between its hosts. Geoffrey, Katie, Sunny, Jeff and Marcela are all cheesing it up in the kitchen Saturday, March 25, on Food Network.

Q: I haven’t seen “Pure Ge-

nius” in about a month. Did that wrap up without me knowing it?

A: That depends: Did you last see it on Jan. 26? That was the airdate of what CBS called the show’s “season finale,” but which most of the entertain-

ment press called its series fina-le.

The series is (perhaps was) about a medical genius who teams up with a tech genius to treat “only the most rare and in-surmountable medical myster-ies,” according to its official de-scription. It debuted this past fall, and its ratings were something close to terrible — it was the 20th-most-watched scripted

show on CBS’s schedule for the season.

That’s the main reason why the press is delivering its eulogy al-ready, even though the network hasn’t made an official announce-ment.

The other reason is that “Pure Genius” creator Jason Katims has already moved on to a new show. Katims is a big deal in the TV biz — he previously did “Parent-

hood” and “Friday Night Lights,” among other shows — and so it’s not surprising that he landed on his feet. His new show, “Drama High,” is based on the true story of an inspirational drama teacher at a working-class high school.

Yesterday was Presidents’ Day, and I read that Donald Trump’s supporters were emailed a Presidents’ Day card to sign for him. And since Trump was busy golfing, they were asked to sign some executive orders for him, too. At his rally on Saturday, Trump suggested there was a terror attack in Sweden that didn’t really happen, and then the Swedish Embassy asked the State Department for an explanation. You know things are bad when the country that makes Ikea instructions is totally confused. I noticed that President Trump didn’t wear a tie to his big rally in Orlando on Saturday. I guess it was either at the cleaners or he got tired of tripping over it.

Exciting day for President Trump, because he went on a field trip to the Museum of African American History. He was so worried Steve Bannon wouldn’t sign his permission slip. Trump was originally supposed to visit the museum on Martin Luther King Day, but that had to be postponed because of scheduling issues. It’s understandable. As Dr. King himself said, “I have a dream — unless something else comes up. Then it can wait.” For those of you keeping score at home, Donald Trump has gone golfing six times in 30 days. That explains the

bumper sticker on Air Force One: “I’d rather be golfing, and there’s a 20 percent chance that I am.” Yesterday, Trump was touring the Museum of African American History and Culture, and according to witnesses, he noticed a stone auction block on which slaves would stand and was moved to say, “Boy, that is just not good. That is not good.” I haven’t heard that kind of eloquent enunciation since the Civil War novel “The Red Badge of Dang, That Is Messed Up.”
