Message from the Headmaster

Someone recently asked me what did I think was the “best” aspect of Matignon High School, now that I have been here over a year. That is truly a hard question to answer, not just because the concept of “best” is subjective and vague, but also because there are so many wonderful things happening here on a daily basis. The students, staff, quality of education, diversity of the community, and family atmosphere all jump to the top of my head. But the more I think about it, the best thing about Matignon High School, is in a way a combination of all of the above – but as our scientific principle of synergy teaches us, oftentimes the sum is greater than the parts.

The best thing about Matignon High School to me is what I call “The Spirit of Matignon”. The Spirit of Matignon is certainly nebulous, but it is also very real. There is just a special feeling one gets when being part of this won-derful community. I felt it the first day I walked into the building and I have felt it every day since. There is an energy; a communal association, a “vibe” if you will, which is unique to our school and absent in many others.

Most impressive to me however, is that this Spirit of Matignon which exists today is not of recent creation. Nowhere was this more evident than at the tremendously moving tribute paid to Corporal Donald Curtin ’62 on September 6th (see story on page 5). As I shared with the over 75 Matignon High School alumni that day:

All of you here today formed a bond with each other, and certainly with Corporal Curtin, during your time at Matignon High School. And while the years have passed, and the strength of your bond has vacillated over time, this memorial demonstrates the primacy and ultimate strength of this bond; a bond that was forged in the halls, classrooms, fields, and stage at One Matignon Road, and it is a bond which has inspired this wonderful event and tribute.

These bonds are still being formed at Matignon High School today. Our students have the same hopes, dreams, fears, and apprehensions that each of you, and Corporal Curtin had. And they are being instilled with the same values, Catholic and moral, and strength of character and responsibility that has resulted in you being here today…

The Spirit of Matignon still lives. It lives in our corridors…

and it most certainly lives in this park this morning.

Matignon High School is a special place. Please visit our new website at www.matignon.org to find out just how special our current students are. Thank you for being part of the Matignon tradition!

Sincerely,Timothy M. WelshHeadmaster

MHS Students and the Boston College Experience

Matignon High School began a partnership with the Boston College Experience this summer. This program exposes our students to real life as a college freshman, by offering a six week program to rising high school seniors to live the experience of a first year college student on campus at BC.

This past summer our three rising seniors

were Julianne Hulin ‘15, Heather Piazza ‘15

and Lauren Longo ‘15 (L to R).

The BC Experience is truly unique. It tailors the entire program to the needs of the students. The students attending find themselves better prepared and more at ease with the transition from high school to college. By engaging with other students, resident advisors, faculty and staff, they learn what it means to become an independent college student. While living on the Boston College’s Campus, once a week the students have the opportunity to visit other campuses in the region. These are organized official tours allowing the students to see what the other schools have to offer. The program also teaches the students what to look for in the college search. This is a win-win situation for our students. They have the opportunity to get a taste of college living and also have questions answered about academics and other interactions which will enable them to get the most out of their freshman year.

One of the students who attended, Julianne Hulin ‘15 wrote, “Over the summer, Matignon High School gave me the opportunity to attend the Boston College Experience Program at Boston College. Attending this program has helped prepare me for college more than I thought possible. We were able to take college classes and see how a professor teaches differently from a high teacher. I know that when I go to college next year, I will be more than prepared to excel academically. We were also able to attend college admissions seminars, which is easing the application process currently. I anticipate the transition to college to be easier and less stressful due to the experience that I had during this 6 week program.”

We look forward to continuing this tremendous opportunity for our students in the future. To learn more about our partnership with Boston College and the BC Experience, or any of our other unique programs with area colleges, please visit our website at www.matignon.org or contact Tim Welsh, Headmaster at [email protected].

Help us increase our

donations by asking if

your employer has an

Employee Matching

Gift Program.

Matignon.org Launches!Matignon High School is proud to announce the launch of a newly designed and functional website.

The new website is located at a new

address as well: www.matignon.org

The new site is designed to give the reader a more personal experience, consistent with Matignon’s family atmosphere. Visitors will have access to up-to-date news, announcements, school, alumni, and athletic calendars, as well as information regarding all aspects of the Matignon community. Special sections for alumni and parents are designed to provide more tailored information, along with on-line giving capabilities and philanthropic information.

The typical corporate matching gift is structured in a way that companies match donations made by their employees to eligible nonprofits. Most companies match at a 1:1 ratio, though some even triple or quadruple donations. In the case of retirees, it can be .50 to 1 ratio by some companies.

It’s a win-win situation for everyone. It is a simple way for your donations to make a huge impact in the lives of our students.

How do Matching Gift Programs Work? Please ask your HR department if they have a matching gift program. Donors / employees go through the following three-step process to submit matching gifts:

1. Find out if your employer or your spouse’s employer offers a matching gift program.

2. Make your personal donation to Matignon High School. 3. Submit the appropriate matching gift form with your initial donation to Fran Levas-Director of Development.

ONLINE GIVING IS HERE.

Supporting Matignon High School is easier than ever before.

✔ You can now make your gift online @ www.matignon.org/support.

✔ You can make your gift annually or schedule a recurring gift monthly.

✔ It only takes a few minutes to complete the process.

Please assist us in helping our students.

Thank you for your support.

Honoring one of our own,

as he left a mark on all

who knew himCorporal Donald L Curtin Memorial DedicationSeptember 6, 2014

On a picture perfect Saturday morning, the Matignon High School Community gathered to pay tribute to and honor one of its own. On a day that we should have been celebrating his 70th birthday, the Matignon Community along with friends and family reflected upon and honored Corporal Donald L. Curtin ‘62 for his ultimate sacrifice. A classmate who attended the ceremony said, “Donny exemplified everything that Matignon imbedded to some degree in each of us as we navigated through our four years of high school education.” The

Curtin family, along with alumni and friends gathered at Matignon High School, proceeded to Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Somerville where Corporal Curtin lay in rest. All in attendance were deeply touched by the prayers, an Honor Guard represented by American Legion Post 19 and, of course, the bugler playing Taps. Classmate Joseph Sullivan sang an adapted version of “Oh Danny Boy” titled “Oh Donnie Boy”. From there the group went on to the rededication of the Donald Curtin Baseball Field located at the Hodgkins-Curtin Park in Somerville, where the official program began. At the field, a beautiful black granite memorial was dedicated to Corporal Curtin. The memorial was commissioned by dozens of Matignon alums from the classes of 1956 to 1966. Included on the memorial is also a tribute to Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Captain Joseph X. Grant ‘57, who also was lost in Vietnam. Remarks were made by Somerville city offi-cials, George Kennedy ’62 representing the organizing committee, Timothy Welsh representing Matignon and by his brother, William Curtin. Speakers remembered a special young man who was loved by all. This was truly evident by the many classmates and friends who attended the day’s events and remembered Donnie fondly after forty five years. With sincere gratitude, the Matignon Community thanks the committee, the family and all the attendees who honored a young man who touched so many lives.

How can you help? One gift… so much impact.

Together with donations from other alumni, parents, faculty, and friends, your annual gift to the FUND FOR MATIGNON creates a vital resource for Matignon High School to continue to grow and flourish.

What makes the Fund for Matignon so vital?

Give Today: Impact Today ---- Monies from the FUND FOR MATIGNON are flexible and are available immediately. This enables the Headmaster and principal to use where there is more need.

Bridge the Gap — Most people do not realize that tuition only cover a portion of what it takes to educate one student. Gifts to the FUND FOR MATIGNON are necessary to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Matignon education, thus allowing us to make certain that our students receive a first rate education.

Consider this for a minute… if we had 100% participation from our 6800 alumni; Imagine how we can transform the lives of our students!

Most of our students receive some sort of a financial package due to circum-stances. Our tuition is modest and yet there are families who need some help in order to give their children a quality Matignon education.

These funds are critical for assuring all of our students can afford and receive the opportunities and experience you received. Please be assured that our students recognize and are deeply appreciative of the generous support of alumni and friends. Your gift, along with those of others, often means the difference of being able to afford a Matignon education.

With your help, we will continue

providing the best and changing

young lives for the better!

Please consider joining us in making a gift that is meaningful for you. Every dollar donated is greatly appreciated as it ensures the continued success of our Matignon students.

Giving to the Fund for Matignon has never been easier! Please use our secure gift processing form to make your gift today to Matignon High School. Please visit our website www.matignon.org to make your gift today! Thank you!

Please contact Fran Levas, Director of Development at [email protected] or 617 876-1212 ext 37.

Adopt a StudentTHANK YOU! Since its inception in 2011, the Adopt a Student Program has assisted us in giving tuition assistance to students who otherwise would not have attended Matignon High School.

Through the generosity of our alumni, you have had a direct impact on our stu-dents’ lives. Deserving students have an opportunity to receive a Matignon High School education. Your investment in the lives of our students is immeasurable. The generous alumni who have given to this program hope that the students receiving this award will also fulfill their hopes and dreams just like they did when walking the very same halls. Their future depends on your generosity.Your continued support of this important program is truly appreciated.

Thank You!

Planned Giving Opportunities THE CARDINAL CUSHING SOCIETY

The Cardinal Cushing Planned Giving Society has been created to recognize those benefactors who help to

ensure that Matignon High School has long-term finan-cial sustainability solutions. The Society is named after

Cardinal Richard Cushing, who provided the strong foundation “endowed” to Matignon High School

Planned gifts are critical to Matignon High School to help us: ✔ Create endowed funds to ensure financial security of the school. ✔ Provide tuition assistance in perpetuity to deserving students to realize the benefits of a Matignon education. ✔ Allow benefactors to make significant gifts through their estates or other planned giving vehicles which can have a benefit to them and their families. For example, did you know:

You can make a gift using appreciated securities and realize larger tax savings?

You can make a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime?

You can make a gift that pays you income for life?

You can turn surplus life insurance into a gift?

You can donate your home, and continue to live in it rent-free?

You can preserve your estate for your heirs, and deliver income to Matignon?

To discuss planned giving opportunities which can have a dramatic impact at Matignon High School and how you can become a member of the Cardinal Cushing Society, please contact Tim Welsh, Headmaster, at (617) 876-1212 x27 or [email protected].

Career DayCareer Day March 28, 2014 — A huge success! 35 Alumni presenters ranging from the Class of 1950 through Class of 2006 participated in Career Day. Career Day is held every two years, allowing our students to have the opportu-nity to experience it twice during their 4 years at Matignon. Our alumni came together from different worlds which included teaching, physical therapy, law enforcement, engineering, and entrepreneurship, and many more.

These alumni presenters took time out of their extremely busy schedules to connect with our students and make them aware of the infinite possibilities that lay before them. Some explained how often their career paths had changed. That there is no direct path to your career and that in a lifetime you may have a couple of different careers.

Our key note speaker was Steven Macone ‘03 is a freelance journalist and standup comedian. He empha-sized doing what you love and enjoying it. Most of the presenters remained and enjoyed a delightful lunch with the faculty and staff.

On behalf of the Administration, faculty and students we deeply appreciate participants’ time and sincerely hope that they will join us in 2016!

We hope to hear

from you in making

a difference in our

students’ lives and

future careers
