Bits & Pieces from the Club Manager’s Desk

Passion-driven, since 1988

Kampung Spirit

The kampong spirit is alive and kicking in Changi. Just the other day the owner of a food stall which I regularly patronized was curious about our ACS’s resignation because he has just lost one loyal customer of 18 years. Business associates were also sympathetic that CGC has lost a conscientious worker, especially so in an industry that is reliant on operation expertise. Within the golf club fraternity any vacated position would set the musical chair in motion. People moved for “better prospects” and the grass is always greener on the other side. The cows of other pastures are not necessary better than ours.

Sedana Golf Resort

A group of Changians visited Sedana Golf Resort, which has reciprocal arrangement with CGC, and was rewarded with a wonderful golfing holiday in Karawang, Indonesia. Sedana Golf Resort is a subsidiary of the Indonesian Sinar Mas Land group.

The group landed at Bandung Airport and was efficiently transported to the well-known Rumah Mode factory outlet for lunch and shopping. After savoring the local delights and filling up the shopping bags the road journey to a hotel in Karawang took 3 hours, thanks to an hour traffic crawl in Bandung town. The group pitched camp at a 4-star hotel, that has been in operation for just over a year and the cleanliness and security were evident.

The next day, upon arrival at Sedana Golf Resort, the group was greeted by a “Welcome Changi Golf Club” banner. We did not expect it as this was a private social visit. The General Manager was at the lobby greeting us and from the onset our comfort was assured. The Changi lions were set to roar and challenge Sedana’s matured course, with its generous wide fairways and fast greens. But, alas, many returned as pussy cats.

The group next toured Jababeka Golf & Country Club which offered an attractive golf and lunch package.

Sightseeing was limited due to the extensive travelling time but the group had the privilege to visit Jati Luhur, the largest fresh water reservoir laced with floating fish farms. The group had live gurami and putin fish, deep-fried local style for lunch and washed down with fresh coconut water.

Indonesia is a large country with abundant manpower resources. At Sedana Golf Resort it had the luxury of 150 salaried employees and 200 part time employees, all locals! Little wonder there were about 50 workers involved in the upgrading of a small part of a fairway. The club also has multiple course machinery for the fairways and greens and judging from the manpower

strength there is no call for equation between workers and machines. I understand that the workers’ rights are deep-rooted to prevent unscrupulous employers applying unfair practices.

A Touching Incident

Changi Golf Club may be small in size but our members are big at heart. Here is a story our members would love to share.

One September Sunday afternoon, a cyclist crashed her bicycle outside our Club house entrance and was lying by the walkway, apparently dazed and hurt. Dr President Tay, who has just finished his game, happened to be at the spot and attended to her minor injuries. He then invited her into our Club house for a rest and observation. The rest of her cyclist group of about 10 mostly NUS undergraduates, followed and settled down at the Golfers’ Terrace. What more, the gracious gesture followed. Our President hosted them to a nice dinner. Obviously the group was very touched by the President’s kindness, generosity and hospitality. So were fellow Changians who were at the Golfers’ Terrace that evening.

TINY TRUTH

Rudeness is often a weak person’s imitation of strength

Around the Greens

The returfed 9th green

The 9th green, returfed with the Supreme Puspalum grass, was opened for play on Saturday 20 September 2014. Golfers have given the thumbs up. Thank you for bearing with us throughout the construction work.

Work will move to the 3rd /12th green once grass is made available from NSRCC. The temporary green, located before the drain, will open for play when the digging work starts.

Tree Pruning

There will be tree pruning work on the 2nd, 3rd and 5th fairways in the following weeks. The contractor’s workers and tree cutting equipment may create movement, dust and noise. Please bear with it and do not enter roped up areas.

H&F Updates

Facilities Upgrading

Due to shortage of car park lots, the Management Committee has approved the construction of a car park at 1st/10th tee box to accommodate 30 cars. The 1st /10th tee box will be moved forward to make it a shorter par 3. Work will commence sometime in October 2014 and may take about a month to complete.

The construction of the car park is also in anticipation of future club house upgrading which might cause temporary closure of the car park within the club house.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Hazy Days Are Here

The haze is back and golfers are advised to heed the daily PSI advisory. Course may be closed and play suspended when the PSI reaches an unhealthy level.
