ou could call Melissa Roberts a matchmaker of sorts. The owner of Gather Home and Garden, open in Church Hill since April, has made it her mission to pair people with their perfect plants. “People come in here and they’re kind of afraid of houseplants … they’ve had them before and they’ve killed

them,” she says. “I really enjoy teaching them that they just haven’t found the right plant. ... You can take care of something and make it thrive for you, we just have to figure out the type of personality you have and match it with the right plant.”

Roberts’ passion for gardening — specifically organic gardening — took root during a six-month internship she did with her husband, Frayser Mi-coud, on a farm in Maine. “The internship taught us how easy it is to grow organically,” she says. "It’s all about making the plant happy and healthy.”

Besides the Australian ferns, begonias and calathea that are waiting for their human soul mates, Gather also stocks a carefully curated selection of organic gardening supplies such as soils, amendments, seeds and tools — most of them locally produced.

Peppered in among the plants and supplies are nature-inspired goods, from notecards, walking sticks and pottery, to kids’ gardening toys (made from recycled milk jugs) and room and body sprays made with essential oils.

While Roberts and Micoud live in Varina, they knew they wanted to set up shop in Church Hill. After hosting pop-up seedling sales in the area and working at local restaurants — he at Stroops Heroic Dogs, she at Dutch & Company — they got the feel for the area.

“Everyone up here loves their yards and gardens,” Roberts says. “There are a lot of different things going on up here, but one thing that brings everything together is growing food or having a plant. It’s like having a pet.”

asy and simple. That’s the goal for artist Mehmet Sahin Altug in his new Carytown gallery, Cool Colors. Altug opened his shop in August 2015 as a successor to his first Richmond venture, the Bainbridge Art Center. With nearly 10,000 square feet of space shared by various artists, Bainbridge was a big

undertaking in an area that is still up-and-coming. Altug enjoyed that ex-perience, but when a developer approached him to purchase the building, an opportunity presented itself: Altug was able to relocate to Carytown, an established retail area, and minimize time spent on management tasks. “This is a perfect location,” he says. “This is like a gift … it’s a dream come true.”

Cool Colors showcases Altug’s distinctive art, recognizable by its bright, saturated hues, reminders of what he saw as a child on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. He’s translated that experience into paintings, many featur-ing birds and other animals and insects drenched in light and color. “That’s where the name for the gallery comes from,” he says.

Altug makes the most of the space. A small shop at the rear of the store, Half Past Noon, features handmade jewelry made by Didi Chisholm. Col-orful glass fan pulls, jewelry Altug found on a recent trip to Turkey, and other offerings by local and regional artists are displayed throughout the store. Altug’s own work is available in many sizes and formats: canvases, limited-edition prints, notecards. The idea, he says, is to make art accessible for all — regardless of budget or living environment. “Some people have limited space,” he notes. “And a print is a good entry point.”

Most of all, Altug is enjoying the convenience of his new life. He lives near the gallery and he has a small studio just steps from the back door, where he paints daily. Lucy, his resident cat, keeps him company during the day and greets visitors. “I enjoy my life here,” he says. “I try to make everything simple and easy.”

wo years ago, Tammy Gurdin — owner of Yesterdays and To-day in Ashland, a shop featuring upcycled finds and her own hand-painted furniture — opened RVA Antiques on Lakeside Avenue. That store, bustling with dozens of vendors sharing 10,000 square feet, soon developed a reputation for its varied

selection and price points. How could Gurdin top that? By opening, just 18 months later, a new store

in the Westhampton shopping district at Patterson and Libbie avenues, that married the antique mall concept with the styling and selection usually found in a boutique. Originally named RVA Antiques on the Avenue, the Patterson Avenue store was rebranded this spring as Vignettes by Design, to better reflect its approach.

“Everybody has their own vignette, their own storefront,” says Jo Ray, the store’s manager. “The Lakeside location is more the thrill of the hunt; this is more refined.”

A casual visitor might never realize that “40ish” vendors are represented in the light and open space, which combined two storefronts between Wes-thampton Pastry Shop and The Grill. “There are no walls, no booths,” Ray says. “It feels cohesive.”

Gurdin thought a home-décor store that incorporated one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture would be a good addition to the area. While the Shops at 5807 down the street also offers gift items, Ray notes the two venues are complementary, not competitors: “It’s apples and oranges,” she says. “It’s all fruit; it’s all good.”

Ninety-five percent of the store’s merchandise comes from within Virginia. “We want to offer more than wholesale shopping,” Ray says.

The goal is to offer something for everyone, Gurdin adds. “We have estate jewelry, but if you can’t manage that, we also have costume jewelry,” she says. “It’s a little bit of this and that.”

odd Fox Gardens operates under one simple belief: “Every-one deserves a garden they can be proud of,” says president Grace Albritton. Formed about a year ago as two separate entities — a for-profit landscape company and a nonprofit that provides pro-bono gardening services — Todd Fox Gardens

has set out to beautify Richmond, one small space at a time.Albritton, who studied English at Virginia Commonwealth University,

grew up in a family of avid gardeners. When a neighbor in Church Hill be-moaned the lack of affordable landscapers, Albritton offered to do the work herself. She enjoyed it and began doing research to see if it was feasible to launch a landscape business catering to people who would not normally hire landscapers — people with smaller yards in Church Hill and the Fan. She also was interested in providing services to those who could not afford it. Today, the money raised through Todd Fox LLC underwrites the work of its 501c3 nonprofit arm.

Named after a Beatrix Potter character, Todd Fox Gardens focuses on native species and food-productive gardening. “Just because it supplies food does not mean that a garden cannot be aesthetically pleasing, “Albrit-ton says. Todd Fox also provides more traditional services — from lawn maintenance and mulching to general clean-up.

Their pro-bono clients range from senior citizens who can no longer maintain their yards on their own, to families who live in public housing and want help growing healthy food. This summer, they hope to begin working with the refugee community. “Anyone can garden, but the start-up costs can be prohibitive,” Albritton says.

In addition to Albritton and her business partner, Galen Canham, Todd Fox employs one other full-time employee. “Every little yard that looks more polished is a step in the right direction,” Albritton says.
