We now offer a Living Well with Chronic Conditions Workshop. This free six week workshop teaches essential tools for the self-management of chronic diseases. A five year research study of more than 1,000 participants developed at Stanford University Patient Education Research Center in collaboration with Kaiser Medical Care Program found that those who completed this course significantly

improved their healthful behaviors, improved their health status, and decreased their days in the hospital. Patients at the Maliheh Free Clinic are referred to the program by their healthcare providers, but the workshop is open to anyone with a chronic condition. Classes are held four times a year in the evening. A Spanish version of the course, Tomando Control de Su Salud, is also taught.

The Maliheh Free Clinic offers a range of medical services, however, our primary focus is on health maintenance, patient education, and preventative care. We are the primary care providers for over 5,000 individuals in our community, providing regular visits, labs, screenings, childhood immunizations, and patient education.

The Maliheh Free Clinic is run by a core team of full-time and part-time professional staff, and many volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, administrators, interpreters and other members of the community. We also draw on the medical expertise and resources of long time partners, including Intermountain Healthcare, the University of Utah, and major pharmaceutical corporations.

Joanie’s Story

“I needed to step out of the insanity but not the humanity of medicine.”— KAREN MILLER, MD —

Volunteer Gynecologist

Joan lost her eyesight about a year ago due to cataracts. Since August 2014 she has been unable to work or drive. Unable to see anything but shadows, she had to stay inside for her safety. Joanie was unable to go to the grocery store or cook and relied on her friends to help take care of her. A friend let Joanie sleep on her couch. In October 2014, she started coming to the Maliheh Free Clinic.

At the Clinic she saw the volunteer ophthalmologist, Doctor Nelson and talked to him about the problems she was facing. Intermountain

Healthcare provided the surgical suite and Dr. Greg Christiansen volunteered his time to perform the surgery. Now that she can see again, Joanie is beaming with happiness. She is finally getting her life back and wants to go back to work. Joanie is very grateful to those who helped her get her vision back. She wants to be an advocate for those with vision loss in similar circumstances.

The Maliheh Free Clinic was named in honor of Maliheh Abdollahi “Modar joon”, grandmother of Mr. Khosrow B. Semnani, the benefactor of the Maliheh Free Clinic. Maliheh selflessly gave of herself to others so that their burdens might be lighter, their visions longer, and their dreams could be fulfilled. The Maliheh Free Clinic stands as a tribute to her. Through its service to the community, the memory of her kind and charitable spirit lives on.
