Gigi’s “Elizabeth A. Wenden 1864” $15, 170 x 187 ~ as Gigi of Belgium noted when she introduced this sampler into our needlework world, “A little word of Love in this world right now” ... the sweet sentiment on this quick-to-stitch sampler is very palliative in these difficult times. The antique, inset, looks like it might have been stitched on an uneven-weave linen … and I can help you with that if you want to try it!

“Elizabeth Precious 1817” $17, 135 x 171

“The Rose Wreath Sampler (C. Matthew 1841)” $24, 300 x 427 ~ oh, my, for me this is one of the most exquisite samplers ever reproduced … if you love roses … and other beautiful flowers… and peacocks … and birds … and I do! Seeing this reminds me that I need to return to mine because it’s too beautiful to languish in the WIP basket!

Another of my favorites, “Elise Schluter 1866” $24, 259 x 236 ~ I absolutely love the border … and the script alphabet … and the colors!. Below, Michele shares her beautiful sampler in progress.

“Lady in Red Spinning Her Wool” $22, 302 x 185 ~ above, Jacqueline’s is beautifully stitched … another one that I adore and want to finish in my lifetime!

It is with great pleasure that I announce that this stunning sampler reproduction, “Mary Lea 1793,” from The Design Studios of Hands Across the Sea Samplers, will be our 2017 Attic Stitch-Along. Mary embroidered this exquisite sampler when she was only 11 years old ~ the model shown here was beautifully executed by Jacqueline Morris. The model, left, will be on display at The Attic throughout 2017. At 373 x 445, it’s a sizable project, very doable in a year’s time. The model is stitched on Lakeside’s Vintage Meadow Rue with Au Ver A Soie’s Soie d’Alger. The overdyed silk conversion is shown on the next page.

Mary Lea’s sampler is bordered with lilies and carnations, is filled with wonderful motifs, a plethora of birds as well as several butterflies and squirrels, a sweet cat and dog on either side of the manor house. I love the touches of blue throughout the sampler, the two apple trees and other trees, and the tulips and other flowers. The sampler is cross stitch over two, satin stitch, with the verse and other words cross stitch over one. The verse: Great God with Wonder and with Praise Not all the Books on Earth beside On all thy Works I look Such heavenly Wonders tell But still thy Wisdom Power and Grace Then let me love my Bible more Shine brightest in thy Book And take a fresh Delight Here would I learn how Christ had dyed By Day to read these Wonders o’er

Announcing The Attic’s new HATS CCC, that is, Hands Across the Sea Chart Collector’s Club As many of you know, the HATS charts are publications that needleworkers love to own, even if they have no intention of stitching the sampler in the near future. These books are beautifully presented in every way, with a historical perspective included for the time period in which the sampler was created, written in such a way that it feels like time travel, like you are sitting there with the samplermaker as she is stitching her sampler. They also include clear stitch diagrams and wonderful literary quotes at the bottom of each page. Wonderful charts to stitch from, they are so well done that many of us love to have them on our bookshelves with our other treasured needlework publications.

Above, Cherry Berry, a stunning cherry slide-top box created by Mr. Miller that is encased in a beautiful cherry-colored silk case fitted with storage areas for needles, scissors, and the unique sampler roll ~ more photos on the following pages.

Above, the tiny drawing of the lid of Enid, a box-shaped needlecase that will very cleverly store your entire needle collection from bodkins to tapestry and embroidery needles. The affixed lid/top is adorned with specialty stitches worked in silk fibers using a color palette of reds, golds and greens, silk and metallic fibers.  Lift the lid - and a stitched bar that stores bodkin-sized needles on the inside/lining of the lid. Once the lid is lifted, the middle section showcases a pivoting pincushion that rests neatly on top of a tiny trinket storage area - ideal for thimbles and treasured trinkets.  This middle section is specifically created for storage of our entire collection of tapestry needles, size 22-28.  It also features a charming label that you can personalize to make it your own.

The third and last section consists of a two-compartment storage box to hold  tiny thread balls and a pincushions  to use for storage of your "counting pins.”   A linen bar attached to the box body allows for neat storage of all your super-fine embroidery needles.

I am pleased to publish photos, workshop details and prices, and hotel information for this very special Attic event. We are privileged to host these Jackie workshops the weekend of November 3-6 at the Hyatt Place in Mesa, located just 15 minutes from The Attic, with shuttle service available to and from the shop. Reservations with the hotel can be made by calling 888-492-8847 or 480-969-8200. You must ask for the “Attic Needlework” group rate (King $119; Double Queen $129) or register online here. These rates are available 3 days pre and post the weekend for any of you who wish to come early or stay longer. The rates include a deluxe continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi throughout all guest sleeping rooms, and shuttle service within a five-mile radius upon availability. The hotel is just 8 miles from the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.

Above, Ode to Jane, a tribute to Jane Austen with her Writing Desk re-created by Mr. Miller of Miller's Carpentry and beautifully fashioned into a needlework accessory through Jackie's needlework artistry. More photos on the following pages.

Attic of Dreams 3 ~ Needlebook Pull ~ This darling needlebook pull-out case is the third piece in the Attic of Dreams collection. The silk fiber and ribbons used match Attic of Dreams 1 & 2. The palm-sized needlebook will feature specialty sampler stitches and a stitched basket filled with pretty spring blooms. Complete kit will include all needed to stitch and finish the project. Photos will be available the end of July. And if you have not taken Attic of Dreams 1 & 2, they will be available for purchase to those taking Attic of Dreams 3. Left from the left, Attic of Dreams 2 with Attic of Dreams 1.

The collection of items created to fill the Ode desk consists of:

* Desk bottom, desk's panel that features a Jane Austen quote with pull opener tab.

* Sewing case - desk fits neatly b e t w e e n t h e t w o s i d e functional ends  when desk is placed on top of sewing case.

* Messenger bag thread pouch * Button Pouch * Pin Keep case * Bottle/trinket holder

Bottle/trinket holder holds three storage bottles. The top and bottom of these two panels that are pulled at the sides to snugly hold the bottles in place are cupped with a Hedebo scallop edge.

So what’s inside this beautiful box hand-crafted by Mr. Miller o f M i l l e r C a r p e n t r y Creations?

Let's open it and see!

Ode to Jane ~ Here’s what Jackie says about how this pièce de résistance came to be: Many years ago I found this wonderful antique lace display desk - it was large - much too large for a lap desk.  I needed to scale it down - so I contacted Mr Miller from Miller Carpentry Creations and asked him to take a look at the piece.  He also was intrigued by the mechanics and shape of the piece.  He asked me what size I would roughly need and I said abut 7 x 8 and cherry, please.  Time passed and one day a superbly mini version arrived at my home.  I could not wait to start working and creating times that would showcase this beautiful handcrafted desk. When thinking/dreaming of stitches and how bands of stitches flow into samplers, Jane Austen's use of words that weave into brilliant tapestry of stories come to mind.  I was inspired to create my own tapestry of silken stitches as the desk's bottom Stitches that inspire, capture our essence of needle artists.

PAGE16THE ATTICPin Keep case - inspired by from a watered-silk antique from my collection of smalls.

Button Pouch - Wanting to capture nature and all the beauty it brings, I stitched a base of green leaves, each of these leave edges are cupped with tiny Hedebo scallop stitches creating a scallop leaf effect. From these leaves pretty flower buds sprout as if they hold a promise of things to come....I adore buttons and am always on the hunt for more so I needed a special pouch for these tiny treasures. The back of the button-bag features a stitched butterfly.

The outside of this sewing case features a circle

pattern that is used to frame the desk bottom and

can also be seen on the Pin Keep, Messenger

thread storage bag.  This circle pattern was

inspired by regency period wallpaper.

Desk bottom - Regency period wallpaper inspired the circle-shaped border. I added the hand-dyed medley colored flowers to add a bit of nature's beauty. Various bands and motives of nature stitched to mimic a tapestry for the desk base.

The sewing case has two functional ends - the storage case interior features an alphabet paying homage to Jane, her masterful weaving of these letters into timeless stories. The two functional ends consist of a pocket for trinkets, and the second is a padded mattress pincushion that lifts to reveal a needle storage section. Two thread-holding Hedebo rings embellish the interior.

The stunning cherry-colored silk is used to finish the 36-ct linen sampler roll with solid and hand-dyed silk ribbon from Mokuba.  The cherry slide wooden container fits into a silk and linen box-shaped case for display and storage. Tiny smalls accompany these stitched in the hues seen on Margaret Towne’s sampler.

The cherry berry seen in the sampler is what inspired me to call this piece Cherry Berry, cherry on the sampler roll and the cherry carrier.

THE ATTIC PAGE18January 2018 Sampler Symposium . . .

... Friday night, January 12, thru Sunday, January 14 Sharing Our Passion for Needlework

W hen we engage in fiber arts, we are creating something, but we’re also participating in historic traditions tens of thousands of years old. You are not only making art for your soul and for future generations, you are embodying the work of our ancestors. —The Woven Road

This quote perfectly illustrates why we are so excited to bring you “A Present from England 1818.” Two hundred years after AM created this diminutive pinkeep for HS, we will show you how to construct a cross stitch version of the knitted antique. From your first stitch to application of the silk ribbon, your labor of love will be a treasure to whomever may uncover it in 2218.

I am very pleased to present the weekend faculty for this event: After a 5 - 6 PM supper ~ Friday night, 6-9 PM, “A Present from England 1818” ~ Vickie & Maegan Jennett/NeedleWorkPress Saturday morning, 9 - 10:30 AM - “A Journey Through Time with Some Charming Samplers with Fascinating Histories,” a lecture presentation by Nicola Parkman, Hands Across the Sea Samplers Saturday, 11 AM - 4 PM, with an hour for lunch, Betsy Morgan/Willing Hands: “The Swan’s Bower” ~ Part 1 Saturday evening, 5 - ? PM, reception at The Attic, with food & refreshments including adult beverages served Sunday, Betsy Morgan’s “The Swan’s Bower” continues 9 - Noon, followed by lunch. Your $595 fee for the Symposium includes all classes, kits, and lecture, and all meals (a light supper on Friday night, breakfast, lunch, and coffee/tea breaks on Saturday, a Saturday night reception at the shop with refreshments and supper, and Sunday breakfast and lunch).

To sampler lovers across the world, Nicola Parkman of Hands Across the Sea Samplers needs no introduction. Nicola lives in a beautiful little cove overlooking the sea in Cornwall, England, a magical place full of inspiration. Nicola collects antique needlework and is interested in 18th and early 19th century samplers and is especially drawn to beautiful borders and  speciality  stitches.  - Read more about Nicola and her partner, Sandra Moffitt of Australia, here.

A Journey Through Time ~ For a short moment in time, we join Nicola Parkman for a bit of time travel while she shares her passion for samplers, exploring the compelling stories of several samplermakers, samplers from her collection, samplers that one day soon you and I can stitch. There will also be time for a short Q & A.

Registration will be by email only, to [email protected] beginning at 12 Noon on June 26, 2017.

The Swan’s Bower with Betsy Morgan/Willing Hands

PAGE19

The theme this time around is "swans" - swan eggs, baby swans, adolescent swans, full grown swans. The title of the design is The Swan's Bower and the original inspiration came from a motif on an 1813 English Sampler which is in Betsy’s collection.  Another inspiration was a motif on a sampler that Betsy saw in a museum in Timaru, New Zealand last year.

The format for this etui comes from an antique needlebook that she bought at Beating Around the Bush in Australia last year.  The original is burgundy colored velvet and is rather worn and ugly, but the construction of it fascinated her and she thought that she could take the format and run with it.  The original was commercially made in England in the early 1900's

Betsy’s version is much larger and has pockets inside, made from the yellow silk Dupioni lining fabric.  There are 3 "smalls" to tuck into the pocket - a scissor holder and fob and a floss holder.  Also included is a swan beeswax thread waxer and a tiny enameled swan charm.  The center of the inside of the book has an attached needle/pin holder which has a thick piece of yellow wool felt inside to hold the needles/pins.

I love swans, and I can’t wait to do this piece!

Betsy has been stitching for over 50 years, beginning with stamped Erica Wilson Crewel kits when she was a child. She has dabbled in almost any type of needlework imaginable, but her heart is in counted thread and Stumpwork. Betsy has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She began designing and teaching needlework for her local EGA chapter in the mid 90's, went professional in 2001 and started her business, Willing Hands Needlework Design, in 2003. Since then she has taught at the chapter level, the regional level and the national level all over the US and in Canada, England and Australia.

“Maria Katarin’s Stitching Reticule” is a Mexican stitcher's purse.  It is named for Betsy’s adopted daughter, Caitie, who is part Mexican.  The various motifs and techniques used in this purse were inspired by an 1844 sampler from Pachuca, Mexico which is in her collection.

Friday, January 12, 9 AM - 4 PM with an hour lunch break, Maria Katarin’s Stitching Reticule

When folded closed, the reticule measures 4 x 8 inches.  It is stitched on light mocha Belfast linen using Gloriana silk flosses and is lined in olive silk Dupioni.  Inside there are 3 small pockets for holding your small needlework tools including two of  the smalls in this design - a scissor fob and a thread winder.  The reticule also includes a 5-inch stitched ruler.

Stitches include: Aztec, eyelet, diagonal pattern darning, pulled four-sided, long-arm cross, diagonal satin, Mexican klosters, satin, rice, upright cross, cross over one and cross over two.

Registration will be by email only, to [email protected] beginning at 12 Noon on June 26, 2017.

PAGE21A Fabulous Summer Offering from . . .

SUMMER SCHOOLHOUSE, Lessons in Abecedarian, the 4-part series from Brenda Gervais/With thy Needle & Thread is coming in 4 installments, the first one projected for late June. Brenda says this mystery series will consist of 4 lessons/4 separate charts, with a total of 6 projects. The chart ship dates are as follows: Lesson #1, June 20th, and the next 3 lessons on the 20th of each subsequent month. Charts will retail for $12 each. The floss palette consists of 15 beautiful shades of hand-dyed fibers, 5 each from Weeks, Gentle Arts, and Classic Colorworks. (Cottons show, below left, at the bottom.). And as is the custom at The Attic, we are also offering a conversion to hand-dyed silks. The projects all coordinate and are designed to be placed together for a striking vignette of tiny handwork, each done over 1 on 28c fabric. The required fabric for all 4 lessons is a 9" x 55" piece. Brenda suggests a 28c Lugana ~ we also have a bit of 25c Mushroom Lugana if you’d prefer ~ and we’ve selected a 28c Lakeside linen, left, that we think goes splendidly with the silk overdyes, left top. The final selection on several of the colors will have to wait till we receive the chart(s) ~ it’s like driving blind; sometimes a reference to the design is very necessary to make the final decision. Our first shipment, Part 1, has arrived and all charts are spoken for, but we’re happy to order

more 😊 !!!

We’ve selected some silk overdyes, right, top, but will release the colors as they are called out in the Parts 1 - 4 because, with several of the colors, we need to see the chart to make the final decision. The cotton overdyes are shown right, below.

Of course, we all need one of these, a very charming magnetic Zappy Dots Needle Nanny, while we work this design ~ $12 each.

This hand-dyed ric-rac trim from Lady Dot was recommended by Brenda to finish our projects ~ $6

COVERLET BERRY SCISSOR TRAY $12, 103 x 70 ~ Tanya includes this special note: This project was originally taught as a class in 2015. The tray was purchased at Hobby Lobby and then modified to suit the purpose. Two loop hangers were removed, the area showing soldering marks was ground, sanded, and filled in with putty if needed. It was then painted with black chalk paint. This design can easily be stitched and finished as a pin pillow.
