When I was single, I used to ask this question all the time: “Where can I meet a great guy? Is there a secret Starbucks they all go to? Why am I seeing wonderful women at the social events I’m going to, but no guys that I’d want to date?

“What’s going on here?”

I got so discouraged that, as crazy as this sounds, I honestly believed there were no good guys left in San Francisco, because most of the men were gay. Or if they were straight, then they knew how highly in demand they were, so they were a bunch of Mr. Players, Mr. Needys, and Mr. Non-Committals. And since I wanted nothing to do with those types, I went for the long-distance guys, thinking that was the solution.


That didn’t solve my dating problem, though, and the reason is simple. The problem was that I didn’t know how to date, so it didn’t matter whether I met someone locally or a long-distance partner from online dating. I still attracted the wrong men. In fact, during a period of 12 years, I attracted 11 of them in a row!

Apparently I’m an overachiever.

I was successful in my career as a professional opera singer, but when it came to love…I really didn’t know what I was doing. It wasn’t until guy number 11 (my fiance) cheated on me and left our relationship that I realized something needed to change, and it was probably me. I didn’t know what to do or how to even go about it, so I went the traditional route and tried therapy. I spent $9000 on therapy hoping to find a solution to my prob-lems with the opposite sex. Sure, it felt good to talk about things and vent my frustrations, but to be honest I really didn’t get anywhere using this approach.

Then I Finally Found Something That Worked!

My biggest breakthrough came about when I got exposed to coaching. Once I started learning the tools in my coaching training and started following this new direction, my life did a complete 180.


Coaching helped me see the root causes of my struggles with men, and I learned proven principles and tools that helped steer me past the wreckage of all those failures and move instead toward the life I had always wanted.

And then something crazy happened.

As if by magic, I suddenly began meeting really wonder-ful, high-quality men everywhere in my own city. What seemed nearly impossible before suddenly became easy.

That’s how I found Tim, who is now the love of my life. We’ve been together over six years and are still going strong.

So let’s start with a basic question you may not have consciously considered: What kind of man would you like to meet?


I know it sounds obvious, but first you have to figure out what kind of fish to catch...and then go where those kind of fish like to swim. Many of us accidentally over-look this important step. Is he into activities or sports? Is he into spirituality, or yoga, or self-improvement? Is he a businessman who has a 9-to-5 job, or is he an entre-preneur who works for himself?

It’s important to consider this question first. Then, once you know what you’re looking for, you can choose from the lists below and start ex-ploring these places with an open mind and a willing-ness to open your heart to someone new. Let’s dive in and have some fun, okay?

1- PERSONAL/SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

This is a great idea to meet men who are more connected to their emotions and value personal development. Here are some places you can check out:

• Yoga classes or retreats• Local leadership events such as Landmark

Forum or Toastmasters events• Art, performance, or dance classes• Community or university lectures, performances,

and theater or movie events• Book signings or poetry reading events• Meditation classes• Art gallery openings



2 - GROUP SPORTS/ACTIVITIES

It’s a great idea to meet men who are into adventurous and sport activities. Here are some places you can check out:

• Group sporting events such as singles or group hiking, cycling, or ski trips

• Rock-climbing lessons or rock-climbing gyms (this is one of my favorites)

• Health clubs• Athletic events to support a cause, such

as marathons, walks, cycling, triathlons, etc.

• Country clubs• Sailing clubs (my uncle met his

girlfriend here)


• Business networking events• Steakhouses and happy hour bars in

the financial district or areas close to corporate offices

• Upscale hotel lobbies• Charity events• Entrepreneur networking events• Country clubs• Business seminars• Wine tasting events

3 - BUSINESS ACTIVITIES

This is a great way to meet men who have either 9-to-5 jobs or entrepreneurs who are visionaries. These men are often ambitious, high achieving, and value their career and financial success. Here are some places you can check out:


4 - INTERNATIONAL AND TRAVEL ACTIVITIES

This is a great way to meet men who are either from other countries (if that’s your jam) or who like traveling and are worldly. Here are some places you can check out:

• Meetup groups for specific language or country activity (i.e., French-speaking group or French art group)

• Google >> [type nationality] events + [type city you live in] and you’ll find a lot of activities around you on that nationality

• Embassy events• Look into travel clubs in Meetup.com• Internations.org is like Meetup.com for

international people


5 - ONLINE DATING

There’s no hiding the fact that I’m a big fan of online dating. I always tell my clients that online dating is the 21st-century version of starting a courtship. In the past (meaning our mother’s time and their mothers’ time), one would go to a social dance (à la Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice or Ren McCormack and Ariel Moore in Footloose).

With online dating, you get to read the profiles and choose, you don't have to worry about awkward first- meeting moments, and you can strike up a conversation and see if he will take the lead. Online dating can be great, as long as you know how to use online dating well. In my experience, the ones that have yielded the highest results are OKCupid.com and match.com. And if you want social proof, a majority of my clients and I myself found our life partners on OKCupid.com.


6 - TELL YOUR FRIENDS

Last but not least, don’t hesitate to let your friends and family know you are intentional about creating your love life and you don’t mind being introduced to a man. You have nothing to lose. This is what I tell my clients: every date is an opportunity to grow and learn more about yourself. So no date is a waste of time! If you don’t like the guy, then you don’t continue and politely end it.
