Steel Fabrication and MachiningTurning steel into solutionsThe Valmont SM steel fabrication workshop is where order production of oil and gas equipment, equipment for the wind sector, transmission towers, material handling systems, and other constructions are completed. The facilities are built and designed to allow for a high degree of flexibility. Valmont SM can handle large and complex structures, while meeting the high demands of strict documentation and traceability.

Machining is incorporated as part of the manufacturing process. The machining workshop is well equipped for small and large structures with high complexity and high demands. The machining workshop has modern, flexible milling and turning capabilities that can handle to 60 tons.

Employees are organized in specialized workshops to ensure attention to detail and quality results. Our certified welders are supported by a variety of machinery and cranes during the steel fabrication process. In the production facilities, structures can be manufactured with weights up to 250 tons under roof and up to 600 tons for assembled constructions at the factory.

AssemblyBringing it all together

Valmont SM performs assembly and service tasks within the energy, industry and building sectors. The assembly department has its own

workshop for pre-mounting of machine constructions before final assembly and testing. Valmont SM carries out mechanical assembly,

hydraulic assembly and electricity installation for cranes, winches, bulk handling equipment, etc.

Valmont SM works as a turnkey supplier and has the facilities to make various quality and function tests of the final product. Cranes

and anchor winches are manufactured with traction of up to 600 tons. Crane test-foundations are available for test up to 3.500 tm.

Furthermore Valmont SM has many years of experience with delivery, assembly and installation of steel structures and

other components on construction sites. Depending on type of contract and conditions, Valmont SM supply engineering / design,

procurement, manufacturing, delivery, assembly, installation, commissioning, startup, handover to customer and service.

Surface TreatmentsWhere coatings and innovation meetFeaturing state of the art automated robotics, the Valmont SM coating facility is designed and fully dedicated to sandblasting, metallization and coating of wind turbine towers.

The entire process from sandblasting to hardening is carried outin one indoor facility separated by split walls and sliding doors.Being located in one facility ensures optimal production withlimited energy consumption as the steel can keep the sametemperature throughout the process, which is essentialfor coating.

Transportation and LogisticsShipping made easyMoving large steel structures not only requires experience, and the right equipment, but the right location can make a big difference as well. Valmont SM is located in the southern part of Denmark close to transport routes to Europe and global markets through the deep-sea harbor in Aabenraa.

You have several transportation options to arrange the best transport in terms of the delivery time and costs. You can choose between Aabenraa harbor, Esbjerg harbor or European motorway.

Valmont SM can handle and transport components of up to 600 tons, where heavier structures are mounted on Aabenraa harbor and then shipped.

HistorySønderjyllands Maskinfabrik (SM) was founded in the 1940s and was owned by the utility, Soenderjyllands Hoejspaendingsvaerk, until 1998 (now Ørsted). In the beginning, it was a service workshop for the utilities, with in-house production of steel constructions for use in power plants and production of transmission towers.

Through the years, SM gained experience in other industries and developed competencies in material handling systems, process equipment, and complex steel structures for larger constructions.

SM started selling to the oil & gas industry in Norway in the middle of the 1990s. Since then, the industry has grown, and Norwegian-based companies have been acquired by global oil & gas suppliers, resulting in SM now supplying globally.

DS Gruppen acquired SM in 1998 and named the company DS SM. At the time, DS Gruppen owned ABC Coating in Roedekro where the company handled coating of wind turbine towers for Micon (now Vestas). The acquisition enabled DS Gruppen to start black steel production of wind turbine towers. The first wind turbine tower production line was ready for use in 1998.

Capacity was expanded with a second line in 2000 and a third in 2002. It also had close connections with the energy sector and continued to deliver steel constructions to utilities.

DS SM expanded its wind turbine tower production capacity in 2007 and 2008 with a state-of-the-art wind turbine tower coating facility based on fully-automated robot technology. In 2007, two black steel production lines for the biggest offshore towers were established.

In 2010 DS SM starts manufacturing direct-drive generator rotor house.

In 2014 the company was acquired by Valmont Industries, Inc. and names the company Valmont SM.
