When to seek a Periodontist
Jeffery J. Becker DDS
Periodontal diseases begin when toxins found in plaque begin to attack the soft tissue surrounding teeth. Once it is embedded in the gums, it breeds rapidly and causes a bacterial infection. The toxins burrow deep into the tissue causing irritation between the gums and teeth, until ultimately, the gums begin to recede. If the patient does not seek treatment right away, the tissue may recede too deeply, and tooth loss may occur.
Bad Breath
If bad breath persists even after a rigorous oral hygiene regimen is in place, it may be an indication of an infection in the gums.
Gangrene in the Tissues
A general dentist can check for this condition, which if present, suggests a periodontal disease.
Bleeding while Brushing or Eating
A common sign of an infection consists of persistent bleeding while eating and brushing.
Gum Recession or Loose Teeth
Longer looking teeth as a result of receding gums and teeth that are becoming loose can be an indication of periodontal diseases.
Related Health Conditions
Certain conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, osteopenia, and diabetes can increase the chances of an infection in the gums.
