WhenMilesJohnsonfirstmovedtoSpringHilldecadesago,itwasliterallyaone-stoptown. “Wehadonelittlestoreonthemainroad—andonepoliceoffi-cer—andveryfewhouses.I’veseenitgrowfromthereallthewayuptowhatyouseetoday,”saysthe86-year-old,whoonceservedasanAldermanaswellasthetown’sViceMayor. “Peoplemovingheretodayhavenoideawhatitwaslikebackthen,”hesays,referringtothedaysbeforeSpringHillmadethe

transitionfrombeingaruralagriculturalcommunitytoasmallcitythatdevelopedaroundaGeneralMotorsSaturnplantinthe1990s.
