    When Student Leaders Take Initiatives

    by Joshua Ega Yuspratama

Morning bloggers! Since this is my first time writing and posting a blog, I hope you will

enjoy reading this. Anyway, dont be afraid to leave your comments or feedback here and Iam really glad to respond and share with you about my personal experiences here.

Three days ago, on Saturday to be exact, Rani and I started off the day with a hectic morningtravelling to Jakarta International School (JIS) for a Leadership Summit initiated by JISCentral Student Council (CSC to be short). At first, I can feel the camaraderie andfriendliness of JIS Councillors and their advisors as the hosts who cordially welcomed usupon entering the High School Library. Two of us can blend and mingle easily with the other

delegates from other schools as we had light breakfast afterwards.

The summit began with some ice-breaker games, such as Chinese Whisper and Poof-Poof, toknow and get along with each other. Mr. Clark, as JIS High School Principal, also visited usand gave a short talk to not only welcome the delegates, but also share his ideas, opinions andviews about student leadership at school.

Afterwards, the participants were divided into four groups, consisting of 1 or 2representatives from each school, for a focused group discussion about Service and

Leadership. It turned up that the discussion went smoothly by having each participant sharingtheir ideas, problems and experiences in running the Council. What struck me from thediscussion was actually about the fact that JIS has a range of service and environmental clubsformed based on students initiatives and proposals. Surely, compared to my school which

does not have any en vironmental or social clubs, it proved the lack of students initiativeculture at our school. However, this certainly motivates our Council to be more aware of ourenvironment and the surroundings eventually by conducting more humanitarian projectsoutside the school.

Finally, each group came up with some possible ideas about feasible inter-school joint-venture projects where schools can collaborate in the planning process and the execution ofthe project as a group. Of course, it is likely to be either environmental or service projects. Inan attempt to achieve this, the participating schools agree to establish a platform very soon tomaintain the liaison. Who knows that someday my school, STB-ACS (International) Jakarta, could take the opportunity to host the next conference? It would be very great experience, indeed, for our Council to not only serve the school community, but also other people as well.

Even though my terms of office as Vice School Captain for this academic year is going toend soon, but I still have big dreams to make the school even better. This means that as analumnus, I have to keep in touch with the school community to always be there and help outwhenever the Council, particularly, encounters some problems and lacks of motivation.
