When someone asks what genre does this play belong to they mean what style, type or kind of play is it?
We’ve learnt about 3 genres so far…..
Naturalism is when the play seems just like real life, the actors are convincing, the plot believable and the
set is very life like. My name is Henrik Ibsen and I’m famous for writing
plays that are in the naturalism category
including A Dolls House.
I’m William Shakespeare although Mrs Clark does insist on calling me Shakey!! I am famous for writing plays that
are tragedies like Romeo and Juliet. What normally happens in a tragedy is the hero will
die and then any chaos is resolved and everything goes
back to normal.
I’m famous for writing a farce called Loot. My name is Joe Orton. Farce plays are funny because people get
themselves into embarrassing situations that are caused by human error, misunderstandings
and complication.
Today’s genre is…..This genre can also be a funny one because the play will be ridiculous and illogical which some audiences will find amusing.
The absurd play you are exploring is called ‘Waiting for Godot’ by this guy, Samuel Beckett. It’s about two tramps waiting for a bloke called Godot who never turns up. They spend the entire play finding ways to pass the time……..How absurd!
