In the prophets vision, the people will rejoice because the Lord is renewing creation withrighteousness and the promise of salvation.A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah:

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent meto bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty tothe captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lords favor, and theday of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mournin Zionto give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning,

the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, theyshall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastationsof many generations. For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I willfaithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant withthem. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring amongthe peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lordhas blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; forhe has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe ofrighteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself

with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what issown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring upbefore all the nations.

    Psalm 126In convertendo

1 When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, *then were we like those who dream.

2 Thenwasourmouthlledwithlaughter,*and our tongue with shouts of joy.

3 Then they said among the nations, *The LORD has done great things for them.

4 The LORD has done great things for us, *and we are glad indeed.

5 Restore our fortunes, O LORD, *like the watercourses of the Negev.

6 Those who sowed with tears *will reap with songs of joy.

7 Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, *will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.

    Holy Gospel: John 1:6-8,19-28

John the Baptist is mistaken for the Messiah or one of the prophets, but he makes clearthat his role is to prepare the way for the Lords coming.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to _______.People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify tothe light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he cameto testify to the light. This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests andLevites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? He confessed and did not deny it, butconfessed, I am not the Messiah. And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? Hesaid, I am not. Are you the prophet? He answered, No. Then they said to him, Whoare you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? He said, I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make straight the way ofthe Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. Theyasked him, Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor theprophet? John answered them, I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you

do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of hissandal. This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known tous in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through theprophets; and above all in the Word made esh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last daysyou sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of theworld. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you.

In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out ofdeath into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he hadgiven thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This ismy Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper hetook the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drinkthis, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and formany for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance ofme. Therefore, according to his command, O Father:

    We remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting toyou, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be

In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bringus to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlastingheritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the rstborn of allcreation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

    8A Note on Todays Readings

Third Sunday of Advent, Year B

Welcome to St. Francis Church. On this Third Sunday of Advent we are again focused on

John the Baptist. Today we hear more of Johns ministry and his response to questionsraised by his message. An important issue for many in the days of the early church wasthe relationship between Jesus and John. In response to those who believed that John theBaptist was the Messiah, the early Christians remembered Johns own words: I am notthe Messiah. . . .I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way ofthe Lord (John 1:20, 23). And, You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, I am not theMessiah, but I have been sent ahead of him (John 3:28).

TherstreadingisoneofIsaiahsvisionsofthenatureofthereignofGodwhentheMessiah comes. It will be a new life marked by eternal life, by peace between people and all

creatures, and by the permanence of Gods love.

ThesecondreadingistheconclusionofPaulsrstlettertothechurchinThessalonica.Hewrote this letter to encourage them to persevere in the Way as they waited for the return ofJesus.ThoseearlyChristianshadatrstthoughtthattheLordsreturnwouldcomeduringtheir lifetimes. After years of waiting some of them had become confused and afraid. PaulassuresthemthattheLordwillreturnbutthattheirlivesnowaretoreectthenatureofGods kingdom rather than to be spent in sitting back and awaiting the End.

The churchs Eucharist is a foretaste of that coming of Christ which is still ahead. In Wordand Sacrament, song and story, we encounter the reign of God in our midst and we revealthat future joy to the world. Like John the Baptist, we are sent ahead of the One who iscoming, and our joy is to see Gods presence in the world increase.

I heard that knowledge in the Scriptures means much more than intellectual awareness. When the Bible mentions knowing, it often relates to the intimacy between a husband andwife to create a new life. Can it be that my access to everything I need is affected by myintimacy with you?

Lord, give me a hunger, an infatuation, a yearning to know you and be known by you. Andeven though it will never equal your love for me, may my love for you abound more andmore in knowledge and depth of insight, so that I may be able to discern what is best andmay be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, billed with the fruit of righteousnessthat comes through Jesus Christto the glory and praise of you (Philippians 1:9-11).

Heavenly Father, one feature of your character or nature that we can clearly see in theScriptures it is that of faithfulness. You are the original promise keeper and we give youpraise and honor. By your Word the universe was made and nothing spoken by you is fornaught.

Isaiah spoke for you to the nation of Judah as it faced the terrible consequences ofdisobedience, distrust and apostasy. Even in the midst of their troubles, however youspoke a word of hope: that those walking in darkness would see a great light; that dawnwould come into the land of the shadow of death.
