Up on a tree a mother bird set. She fed her young. She fed her young with love and passion. She fed her young and tickled its head, wings and shoulder. She tickled them every now and then. The young was happy. It thrilled and excited. It delighted with every worm his mother casted into his wide opened mouth. What a loving scene! What a charming panorama.Hanna got amazedHanna got amazed as she saw this lovely scene. She hungered for a child. She craved for a baby. Her feeling of maternity got into her in strong influx. She wanted to be a mother. She yearned to be mother of a child. She must have it. The Al-Mighty Allah Who gave this bird a chick must grant her a child. A child whom she will love, whom she will give her passion, clemency and kindness. How is it possible? She was a barren woman. She would not give birth to any child. She was much older than the age when a woman bears a child and gives birth.

But she was a strong woman of beliefBut she was a strong woman of belief. She had has a steady belief that the God she is worshiping is the creator of the heavens and the earth; creator of the universe. She believed that this God Who is none other than Allah has ultimate power over everything. He can create anything out of nothing. It is just matter of a word for Him, nothing else. He just says ‘Be’, and the thing He wanted takes its shape. How easy it is for Him to create!

Hanna’s vow Everything in the universe are compelled to follow his command, so will do my body, so will do my womb. So why don’t I make a strong call to my creator! Isn’t He the One Who said: ` Call me, and I will answer you? She whispered in her mind and decided to call Him in a steady tone, she placed her call in front of Allah. She said: O my lord! I have vowed to You what is in my womb, to be dedicated (to Your service), so accept this from me. Indeed, You are All-Hearing, All-Knowing.’

She did it out of her persistence, she did it out of her diligence. Otherwise, until the moment, she knew, she has nothing in her womb. However, Allah is All-Powerful and All-Knowing. He can do anything in a moment. Furthermore, she not only wished a child but also she insisted that this child will have no duty in life other than serving Allah through serving His house: Baitul Maqdis. She just wanted a child who will be a true servant of Allah. She didn’t demand any warrior or a political leader. She just wanted a child who will sacrifice his life to serve the mosque. He will do it in silent. He will be a true example of purity and peace. Such a strong and holy call could not go without answering. Allah answered her immediately. She was pious and devotee. She was a member of a family chosen by Allah to be leader of spirituality. To be a family in which prophets and messengers will be hatched. So the answer came without any lingering. Allah sent His commandAllah sent His command to Hanna’s body to be prepared to receive the child. So she got her

period immediately. When her period was over she receive a child from her husband. Her husband was Imran. The third Surah of the Quran was name after his name. He was Hanna’s husband and head of one of families chosen by Allah. Hanna was overwhelmingly happy with this gift of Al-Mighty Allah. She would always praise Him, thank Him for what He bestowed upon her. She wished the child to be a boyShe took care of the child in her womb. She wished it to be a boy. She vowed that the child will serve the mosque. And at that time no one was allowed to serve the mosque unless he is a man. She told Allah that the child will serve His house. One day Hanna felt a severe pain in her womb. She knew that the time has approached to give the birth. She was happy and amazed. She is finally going to get a child who will serve Allah, who will be devotee and pious, who please her and her husband by obeying them in fulfilling their wishes. She gave birth. It was not boy as she waited for. It was a girl. She felt sorrow and sighed. She offered apology to Allah that she could not give birth but to a girl. However, Allah Al-Mighty gave her a girl.

He is Al-knowing, full of wisdom. If He decided to give her a girl that means this girl is better than the boy she wished. Allah said in the Holly Quran reporting event: ‘O my Lord, I have delivered a female,- and Allah knew best what she delivered- ‘And the male is not like the female.’ (Quran 3: 36).It was a gift from Allah. No matter if it was male or female. Hanna felt peace at her mind. She felt contented. Because this is the decision of Al-Knowing and Al-Hearing Allah. This girl will serve the mosque. She will break custom of serving the mosque, which was till then limited to men. This was a miracle indeed after the miracle of giving birth to a child at an old age. Hanna named her childHanna wished her girl to be pure, pious, devout, and fervent servant of Allah. So she named her Maryam (Mary), meaning ‘servant of Lord.’ She also sought refuge with Allah for her girl and her girl’s children from Satan. She did it because she knew Allah alone can give refuge from Satan, the expelled. She wanted her girl to be away from devil. She desired her to be an example for other in piety and virtue. She also wished her girl to be mother of children. She expressed of her wish in a steady language as

she did for herself. She didn’t said: O my lord! Grant her children and save them from Satan. Instead she said: ‘I seek refuge with You for her and for her children from Satan, the expelled.’ How strong believer she was! This is what we read in the Holly Quran as Allah says reporting Hanna: ‘And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge with You for her and for her children from Satan, the expelled (from the mercy of Allah).’” (Quran 3: 36).Hanna was a strong woman. She didn’t waited for men relatives to name the child. She herself took the initiative and named her child Maryam. She named her with a good name. A name that depicts her wisdom and piousness. She chose a name that will encourage her child to be devotee to Allah. She didn’t choose any name which is meaningless, strange. She was really a woman of wisdom and knowledge.
