Elements of a Good

Business PartnershipLike a bundle of sticks, good business

partners support each other and are less

likely to crack under strain together than on

their own. In fact, companies with multiple owners have a stronger

chance of surviving their first five years than sole proprietorships,

according to U.S. Small Business Administration data.

Yet sole proprietorships are more common than partnerships,

making up more than 70 percent of all businesses. That's because

while good partnerships are strong, they can be hard to make. Here

are some elements that good business partnerships require:

1. A shared vision - Business partnerships need a shared vision. If

there are differences in vision, make an honest effort to find

compromise. If you want to start a restaurant and your partner

envisions a fine dining experience with French cuisine, while you

want an American bistro, you are going to be disagreeing over

everything from pricing and marketing to hiring and décor.

2. Compatible strengths - Different people bring different skills and

personalities to a business. There is no stronger glue to hold a

business partnership together than when partners need and rely on

each other's abilities. Suppose one person is great at accounting

and inventory management, and another is a natural at sales and

marketing. Each is free to focus on what they are good at and can

appreciate that their partner will pick up the slack in the areas where

they are weak. Two gears meshing.

3. Defined roles and limitations - Before going into business,

outline who will have what responsibilities. Agree which things need

consensus and which do not. Having this understanding upfront will

help resolve future disagreements. Outlining the limits of each

person's role not only avoids conflict, it also identifies where you

need to hire outside expertise to fulfill a skill gap in your partnership.

4. A conflict resolution strategy - Conflict is bound to arise even

if the fundamentals of your partnership are strong. Set up a routine

for resolving conflicts. Start with a schedule for frequent

communication between partners. Allow each person to discuss

issues without judgment. If compromise is still difficult after

discussion, it helps to have someone who can be a neutral arbiter,

such as a trusted employee or consultant.

5. A goal-setting system - Create a system to set individual goals

as well as business goals. Regularly meet together and set your

goals, the steps needed to achieve them, who needs to take the

next action, and the expected date of completion.

6. An exit strategy - It's often easier to get into business with a

partner than to exit when it isn't working out. Create a buy-sell

agreement at the start of your business relationship. This should

outline how you exit the business and create a fair valuation system

to pay the exiting owner. Neither the selling partner nor the buying

partner want to feel taken advantage of during an ownership

transition.

FYI - Public Safety Special Assessment District InformationAugust 7, 2018 Primary Election

2.95 mills for 12 years

As stated in the ballot proposal to be considered by the voters (see below), if fully levied in

December 2018, it is estimated that this special assessment would generate approximately

$6,032,095 in new revenue for Police and Fire Department equipment, maintenance and

operations in 2019, with at least $869,031 of that amount only usable for the purchase of equipment.

This type of special assessment dedicated only for Police and Fire Department equipment, maintenance, and operations is specifically

authorized by Michigan law, Public Act No. 33 of 1951. If approved, this special assessment will allow for longer range planning to

meet the equipment and personnel needs of the Police and Fire Departments over the next 12 years. Currently, that planning is

limited by the Township's budget process that determines on a year-to-year basis the amount of General Fund support that will be

provided for those Departments.

If approved by the voters, the actual creation of the Township-wide special assessment district, amount to be levied in 2018, and a

final estimate of the costs and expenses to be funded by that levy will not be determined until after a public hearing by the Township

Board on Monday, August 27, 2018. However, possible uses of the special assessment and reasons for them include:

I. PERSONNELa. Hire up to 9 Police Officers

i. The number of sworn police officers has been reduced by 27 since 2010b. Hire up to 5 Fire Fighters/Paramedics

i. The number of firefighters/paramedics has been reduced by 3 since 2010II. VEHICLES

a. Replace police and fire vehicles on a scheduled basisa. FIRE VEHICLES

1. Fire engines and special response vehicles average age is 16 ½ years2. Ambulances average age is 6 years

3. Command and staff vehicles average age is 12 yearsii. POLICE VEHICLES

1. 42 vehicles, average age is 5 years with high mileageIII. Repair and maintenance of Police and Fire buildings

a. Police Headquartersb. 5 Waterford Fire Stations

For a home with the average taxable value in Waterford of $56,822, the special assessment would be$167.62/ annual; $13.97/ month; $3.23/week; $0.46/day

SPECIAL ASSESSMENT FOR POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTSShould the Charter Township of Waterford raise money to equip, maintain, and operate the Township Police and Fire Departments

by annual special assessment levies of up to 2.95 mills ($2.95 per $1,000.00 of taxable value) on all real property in the Township

that is not exempt from property taxes, for a period of 12 years, with the levies to be from 2018 to 2029 to provide funding for the

2019 to 2030 calendar years, and the first 0.425 mills levied in any year dedicated and only usable for the purchase of equipment

for the Police and/or Fire Departments? If approved and fully levied in December 2018, the estimated revenue from this special

assessment collected in the first year would be $6,032,095.00.

owners don’t have the time to be an expert at everything.

Connections Business Services acts as a company’s marketing

department. What sets Connections Business Services apart

from other marketing firms is that Rochford can show a client

how to do something or do the project such as Facebook

posting or email newsletters for the business owner. CBS offers

a free initial consultation and makes marketing services affordable

for small business owners and organizations.

Rochford began her career in the financial services field as a

national account manager for an insurance company that sold

products to banks and credit unions. She was responsible for

business development, account installation, client relationships

and training. After the company was purchased, the corporate

offices were moved to Chicago and Toronto. Rochford then

joined her family’s flower shop, Accent Flowers & Gifts as the

marketing director, where she continued to fine-tune her

networking skills and learned to market the business on a

shoestring budget.

Lisa grew up in Macomb, IL and currently lives in Waterford with

her husband, Mark, and daughter, Rachel. She has served as

president of the Chamber, executive board member and currently

enjoys meeting new chamber members through her role as
