THE  MONUMENT

THE  POINT

Design Thesis For the past nine years I have been living in a beautiful neighborhood, The Point Lake & Golf Club (Trump National Charlotte) in Mooresville, NC. Until recently I haven't noticed or appreciated the elements of design that have surrounded me. That is why I have chosen The Point to document how these elements have been a part of my everyday life. I used a clean format throughout the magazine, very straight, linear and structured. The layout is consistent and I also chose a crisp Century Gothic font. All of the pictures in this publication were taken by me in my house, The Point, or our club, Trump National Charlotte.

THE  FINISHING  HOLE

TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Growing up I was always a lanky awkward kid that was not sure what to do with myself. I have always been an energetic kind of person, so naturally my parents got me involved in sports. I started off with all the basics; basketball, football, soccer and baseball. Despite my overwhelming energy, I was horrible at these sports due to my lack of coordination.

So I turned to the water… Although swimming is a very structured, rigid, repetitive and precise sport, it has a very fluid and rhythmic flow to it. I like to balance the things in my life in this way, organically technical.

Add the precision of competitive swimming and the creative energy of an awkward teenager and you have the design perspective of Reed Wheeler.

Elements of Design

5

LINE

Straight Horizontal Straight Vertical Curved Flowing

LINE forms the direction or feeling of a design and is particularly dominant in contemporary art and interiors.

THE  GENERAL  STORE

6  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Straight Horizontal LINE

HORIZONTAL LINES create a feeling of repose and solidity that is calming and relaxing. The lines in this fence elongate the estate it is surrounding.

THE  SQUARE

7  THE  POINT

Straight Vertical LINE

VERTICAL LINES tend to provide a feeling of height, strength and dignity. Like any entrance, you want the feeling of security. These columns outside of the bakery reinforce this feeling.

THE  BAKERY

8  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Curved Flowing LINE

Horizontal Lines create a feeling of repose and solidity and, like vertical lines, also provide strength.

THE  DOCK  PATH

CURVED FLOWING LINES represent more natural movement. This dock complements the smooth, flowing curves of the lake. These lines also act as a calming guide.

9  THE  POINT

TEXTURE

Surface Quality Real Non-reflective Reflective

TEXTURE is the surface quality of an object.

THE  CIRCLE

10  THE  POINT

Surface Quality Real TEXTURE

Surface Quality Real Texture is texture you can physically feel. These coarse, ridged cobble stones are a great example. They not only look rough but also feel rough.

THE  VILLAGE

11  THE  POINT

Non-Reflective TEXTURE

NON-REFLECTIVE TEXTURE does not reflect light. Standard house paint is a very common non-reflective texture. As you can see, the white paint on these tiles do not reflect any light.

THE  TAVERN

Reflective TEXTURE

Reflective Texture …

THE  CIRCLE

REFLECTIVE TEXTURE does exactly what it says, reflects. As you can see in this sign, the grass and trees are being reflected off of it.

THE  GENERAL  STORE

SOFFIT LIGHTS are lights embedded within the ceiling, brighten specific areas, such as a porch or a cabinet.

18  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Combustion Light

THE  MEN’S  LOUNGE

COMBUSTION LIGHT is light that is created by fire. At The Point, the theme is a Nantucket Village, and much of the village is illuminated by natural, combustion light.

19  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Natural Light

THE  LAKE  CLUB

NATURAL LIGHT is light that comes from outside, whether it be from the sun or moon. Here you can see the big windows allowing sunlight to enter and light up the room.

20  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

COLOR

Monochromatic Analogous Complementary

COLOR is dependent on light.

THE  LIVING  ROOM

Monochromatic COLOR

THE  LAKE  CLUB

MONOCHROMATIC COLOR is when there are different shades of the same color. Here the theme is white and as you can tell, there

are many different variations of it.

22  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Analogous COLOR

THE  DINING  ROOM

ANALOGOUS COLORS are colors that are adjacent on the color wheel. Here we have a very creamy yellow and a darker, burnt, orange to complement it.

23  MODEL  HOME  –  THE  POINT

Complementary COLOR

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS are colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel. Here we have a bluish grey and a vibrant orange that complement each other very well.

THE  SITTING  ROOM

SPACE is the area found within an enclosure.

THE  STAIRWELL

25  MODEL  HOME  –  THE  POINT

Positive SPACE

THE  LAKE  CLUB

POSITIVE SPACE is anything that takes up space. Here you can see the massive fireplace consuming much of the space within the room.

26  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Negative SPACE

Negative Space is any empty space. There is plenty of negative space between the racks of these windows. This can be used to bring in natural light or break up a space but allow visual passage.

THE  TENNIS  SHOP

27  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Crowding Territoriality SPACE

THE  LOFT

CROWDING TERRITORIALITY SPACE is space where people gather in close proximity. Like this one, living rooms are the most common type of crowding territoriality space.

Abstract SHAPE

GUEST  ROOM

ABSTRACT SHAPE departs from nature. The design elements may or may not be recognizable. Here the traditional, or natural, representation of the sun and moon have been transformed into an alternative representation.

30  MAYFAIR  ROAD

Geometric SHAPE

THE  TENNIS  COURTS

GEOMETRIC SHAPE is made of classic geometric shapes such as rectangles, triangles, circles etc.. This carpet is made up of Rectangles and squares.

31  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Natural/Organic SHAPE

THE  POOL  AREA

NATURAL/ORGANIC SHAPES are either created from nature or are made to look like they were. These rocks are a great representation of natural/organic shapes.

32  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

FORM

Geometric Natural Abstract

FORM defines the essential nature of the design that distinguishes it.

THE  KITCHEN

Geometric FORM

THE  LAKE  CLUB

GEOMETRIC FORM is structure made up of proportional geometric shapes. Here we see the rafters are made up of triangles and rectangles that together create a balanced structural frame.

34  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Natural FORM

THE  18TH  GREEN

NATURAL FORM is made up of things from nature. This earthy landscape is made up of water, forestry and stone.

35  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Abstract FORM

THE  DINING  ROOM

ABSTRACT FORMS are forms that resemble natural figures but are altered. Here we have a glass vase that has the shape of a swan but is altered to be more refined.

BALANCE

Structural Symmetry Structural Radial Symmetry Visual Symmetry Visual Radial Symmetry

THE  LAKE  CLUB

38  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

BALANCE is that quality in a room that establishes a sense of equilibrium and repose.

Structural Symmetry BALANCE

THE  MEN’S  LOCKER  ROOM

STRUCTURAL SYMMETRY BALANCE is when a building is symmetrical on both sides. Here at the men’s club, both sides are of equal symmetry.

39  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Structural Radial Symmetry BALANCE

THE  PUTTING  GREEN

STRUCTURAL RADIAL SYMMETRY BALANCE is a structure that is symmetrical in each quarter, Spheres are a fantastic representation of radial symmetry.

40  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Visual Symmetry BALANCE

THE  COMMONS

VISUAL SYMMETRY BALANCE is when you can cut a scenery down the middle and have it be symmetrical on both sides. Here the staircase leading to the center tree are both symmetrical.

41  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Visual Radial Symmetry Balance

THE  TAVERN

VISUAL RADIAL SYMMETRY BALANCE is when scenery can be cut into fourths and still be symmetrical in all four pieces. Circular tables like this one are an excellent example of radial balance.

MASSING

Actual Density Optical Density

When a two-dimensional shape takes on a third dimension, it becomes a MASS made up of a volume outlined by the shape.

THE  GUEST  ROOM

50  MODEL  HOME  –  THE  POINT

Actual Density MASSING

THE  TURN  HOUSE

ACTUAL DENSITY MASSING is when an object or structure takes up positive space with its presents. Here, the Turn House is a very full and heavy building that takes up space with its mass.

51  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Optical Density MASSING

THE  VILLAGE  GREEN

OPTICAL DENSITY MASSING is when there isn’t an actual object to take up space, but rather the scenery. Here the negative space is filled with rich color and natural texture which completes the scenery.

52  THE  POINT

RHYTHM

Repetitive Transitional/Flowing Climatic

THE  TAVERN

RHYTHM assists the eye in moving easily about a room from one area to another, creating a flowing quality.

53  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Repetitive RHYTHM

THE  LAKE  CLUB

The pattern on the carpet is a REPETITIVE RHYTHM because it is repeated throughout the room. The tables are also arranged in a repeated fashion.

54  TRUMP  NATIONAL  CHARLOTTE

Transitional/Flowing RHYTHM

THE  COMMON  DOCKS

Here we see the dock as a set of vertical lines that have a TRANSITIONAL/FLOWING RHYTHM which leads to the docks that are a series of horizontal lines.

55  THE  POINT

Climatic RHYTHM

THE  VILLAGE  GREEN

CLIMATIC RHYTHM is when there is a series of rhythmic elements that lead to a focal point. Here the pillars surround and draw your attention to the focal Point.

56  THE  POINT

PROPORTION

Object in Proportion with Space Object NOT in Proportion with Space

THE  KITCHEN

PROPORTION refers to both the relationship of one part of an object to its other parts or to the whole, as well as the relationship of one object to another.

57  MODEL  HOME  –  THE  POINT
