Spring 2018

We are quickly moving towards the last marking period of this school year. Students and staff have worked with effective effort with our teaching and learning process. With report cards arriving in April, this is a good opportunity to review where students are in their learning and achievement, and then finish strong to achieve end of year goals. Please continue to reach out to your child’s teacher, and to me, with any concerns or questions you might have. We have several school activities in the coming weeks such as International Night (April 25th), Field Day (April 27th) and Arts, Science & Technology Night (May 23rd). We also look to welcome incoming kindergarteners for next year during the May 9th Kindergarten Orientation. Busyness and activities do not always define progress so know that we plan our activities to engage our students and community to exhibit growth, not just insipid movements. It is a pleasure to serve your children as principal.

Estamos avanzando rápidamente hacia el último período de calificaciones de este año escolar. Los estudiantes y el personal han trabajado con esfuerzos efectivos con nuestro proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Con las notas academicas al llegar en abril, esta es una buena oportunidad para revisar dónde están los estudiantes en su aprendizaje y logro, y luego terminar fuerte para alcanzar las metas de fin de año. Continúe comunicándose con el maestro de su hijo y conmigo, con cualquier inquietud o pregunta que pueda tener. Tenemos varias actividades escolares en las próximas semanas, como la Noche Internacional (25 de abril), el Día de Juegos al Aire Libre (27 de abril) y la Noche de Artes, Ciencia y Tecnología (23 de mayo). También esperamos dar la bienvenida a los estudiantes de kinder entrantes para el próximo año durante la orientación de Kindergarten del 9 de mayo. Grade Level News PreK/Head StartDuring the third quarter, we will begin a theme called, “Imagine It, Make It” which is an exploration of imagination and creativity.  Children will share their feelings and ideas through art, dance, dramatic play, building, and music.  After that, we will move into a theme called, “Growing Up Healthy.” In this theme, children will learn about nutritious eating, exercise, and other positive ways of taking care of themselves.  We will also learn about what to do in case of an emergency and how to call 911.   

The Early Childhood Team – Mrs. Danielson and Mrs. Yoo

KindergartenDuring the month of May, in reading, kindergarteners will be reading fiction stories and nonfiction texts. They will be retelling familiar stories using key details and identifying the main topic. Students will also understand and use question words and use frequently occurring nouns. Kindergarteners will work on reviewing the sounds and writing the letters. In math, our students will focus on counting by ones to 100 and modeling teen numbers as ten ones and some more ones. Students will also work on fluently adding and subtracting within 10 and representing and sorting. In science students will study trees, habitats and how animals move. In social studies, kindergarten students will identify and describe daily events and identify customs and traditions. In writing, students will focus on forming and writing the letters. They will also be focusing on writing how to books and writing opinions. Students will continue to practice writing familiar words and sounding out their words in their writing. Kindergarten orientation is on Wednesday May 9th. There is no school for current kindergarteners.

First Grade For the remainder of the school year in reading, students will be focused on reading both literature and informational texts. For literature, we will focus on asking and answering questions about key details, identify words or phrases that suggest feeling, identify who is telling the story at various points, compare and contrast character experiences and have collaborative conversations. For informational,  we will focus on identifying and discussing reasons an author gives to support points, asking and answering questions about key details in the text, identify basic similarities in and differences between photographs in two texts on the same topic and sort words into categories to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent. Please remember to read for at least twenty minutes each night!  In math students will work on addition and subtraction fluency within 10 and adding and subtracting within 20 and solve 2-digit addition and subtraction using base ten.  Students will identify attributes of 2-d and 3-d shapes and describe how shapes are used to build and build things using shapes.  Students will partition shapes into equal halves and fourths. Students will tell and write times from an analog and digital clock to the hour and half hour.  In science, students identify ways to protect the environment and conserve natural resources.  In social studies, students will identify and use map elements, learn how we use natural, human and

capital resources to make goods, discuss how people earn money, how humans use different forms of transportation, the value of markets and goods and making choices when buying goods.

Second Grade

The second grade teachers would like to thank you for all your support this Reading – Throughout the rest of the school year, we will continue to read a combination of fiction and nonfiction texts. While reading informational texts, students will be asked to identify main topic, author’s purpose, know and use text features, and compare two texts. While reading fictions, we will identify story structure, point of view and challenge and response. Writing – The students will write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book of their choice. The writing will include: an opinion, reasons that support the opinion, linking words to connect opinion and reasons, and a concluding statement. The students will read and write poetry to learn how to describe actions, thoughts and feelings. We will learn to see with a Poet’s Eyes and experiment with repetition, mood and comparative language. Finally, We will research a person who has showed effort, motivation, and persistence.  Math – The students will tell and write time to the nearest five minutes, quarter hour, and half hour, determine the appropriate use of a.m. and p.m. Next, students will use fraction vocabulary when dividing shapes into parts. We will write equations to represent objects in arrays. Students will also add two three-digit numbers within 1,000. Finally, we will continue to review their basic facts in addition and subtraction. Science – Our main focus in science has to do with life cycles. The students will identify and record observable properties of the moon over time using a Moon Journal. We will observe living things by describing their appearance, how they live and interact with their environment. Social Studies – Students will learn about goods, services, and economic choices. They will identify resources as natural, capital or human made. We will also study different civil rights leaders.

The Second Grade Team – Ms. Berman, Ms. Jones, Ms. Roth, Mrs. Webb & Ms. Wiedecker

Third Grade In reading, students will continue reading a combination of fiction and nonfiction texts. We will be working on explaining how the events in the story build on each other, determining the central message, explaining how the character's actions contribute to the sequence of events, identifying the main idea and supporting details, comparing two texts on the same topic, and having collaborative discussions. In math, students will represent fractions as area models and on number lines, identify equivalent fractions, compare fractions, solve 2-step word problems, tell and write time to the nearest minute, and continue working on multiplication and division fluency.  In writing, students will continue working on their informational books. Then, we will be writing realistic fiction stories. Students are working on elaborating and using linking/transition words in their writing. In science, students will develop an understanding of the flow of matter and energy by investigating how the production, use and disposal of a product impacts Earth’s resources and natural environment. In social studies, we will be learning about elements of cultures and researching Mexico City and Tenochtitlan. Then, we will be

learning about decision making, opportunity cost, limited resources, specialization and technology on both the producer and the consumer. 

The Third Grade Team – Ms. Cassidy, Ms. Dantus & Mr. Zhou

Fourth Grade For the remainder of the year in Math, fourth grade students will extend understandings about fractions to represent them as decimals to the hundredths place.  Students will also apply and extend strategies for multiplying up to a 4-digit number by a 1-digit number from marking period 2, to problems involving products of two 2-digit numbers. Students are expected to flexibly apply and explain their strategies based on understandings of place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between multiplication and division.   During Reading, using a realistic novels, students will determine theme and compare and contrast events. Students will use the theme to summarize portions of text and discuss point of view.  Students will also read informational and technical texts related to science and music content.   In Science, students explore a the Earth's spheres and analyze how those spheres interact with one another and gradually change the Earth's surface. Also, students will identify the relationship between the formation of rocks and fossils as further evidence of Earth’s changing surface over time. In Social Studies, students continue their study of the colonial period by determining how geographic characteristics affected how colonists lived and worked in the Middle and New England regions. Students explore how colonists in these regions adapted to and modified the environment and implemented democratic ideas and practices.

The Fourth Grade Team – Mrs. Daniels, Ms. Gray, Ms. Collier and Ms. Kirks

Fifth Grade Thank you to all of the fifth grade families who have helped to make our trip to Philadelphia in April so successful.  The students really had a great time and were able to connect their learning about the Revolutionary War.  In the final quarter of this school year, students will be engaged in researching and evaluating a career choice and determining if it is a viable option for their future.  Students will be looking at plants and animals during science to determine that plants and animals have traits inherited from parents and that variation of these traits exist in a group of similar organisms.  The students will be expanding their financial literacy skills as they study markets and the economy in social studies.  In math, students will be multiplying decimals and studying geometry.  Wheaton Woods is very proud of our Fifth Grade Class of 2018.  We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday, June 11th at 6:30pm for the Promotion Ceremony.  Have a great summer, Wheaton Woods will miss you!

Noticias en Pre-Kindergarten y Head Start Durante el tercer trimestre, comenzaremos un tema llamado "Imagínalo, Hazlo," ("Imagine It, Make It") que es una exploración de la imaginación y la creatividad. Los niños compartirán sus sentimientos e ideas a través del arte, el baile, el juego dramático, la construcción y la música. Después de eso, comenzaremos un tema llamado "Creciendo Saludablemente"("Growing Up Healthy"). En este tema, los niños aprenderán sobre la alimentación nutritiva, el ejercicio y otras formas positivas de cuidarse a sí mismos. También aprenderemos qué hacer en caso de una emergencia y cómo llamar al 911.

Noticias en Primer Grado Por el resto del año escolar en lectura, los estudiantes se enfocarán en leer literatura y textos informativos. Para literatura, nos enfocaremos en hacer y responder preguntas sobre detalles clave, identificar palabras o frases que sugieran sentimientos, identificar quién cuenta la historia en varios puntos, comparar y contrastar experiencias de personajes y tener conversaciones en colaboración. Para información, nos enfocaremos en identificar y discutir las razones que un autor da a puntos de apoyo, hacer y responder preguntas sobre detalles clave en el texto, identificar similitudes básicas y diferencias entre fotografías en dos textos sobre el mismo tema y clasificar palabras en categorías para obtener un sentido de los conceptos que representan las categorías. Noticias en Segundo Grado Lectura: durante el resto del año escolar, continuaremos leyendo una combinación de textos de ficción y no ficción. Al leer textos informativos, se les pedirá a los estudiantes que identifiquen el tema principal, el propósito del autor, conozcan y usen las características del texto, y que comparen dos textos. Mientras leemos ficciones, identificaremos la estructura de la historia, el punto de vista y el desafío y la respuesta. Escritura: los alumnos escribirán artículos de opinión en los que presentarán el tema o el libro de su elección. La redacción incluirá: una opinión, razones que respaldan la opinión, unir palabras para conectar opiniones y razones, y una declaración final. Los estudiantes leerán y escribirán poesía para aprender a describir acciones, pensamientos y sentimientos. Trabajaremos para explicar cómo los eventos en la historia se basan el uno al otro, determinando el mensaje central, explicando cómo las acciones del personaje contribuyen a la secuencia de eventos, identificando la idea principal y los detalles de apoyo, comparando dos textos sobre el mismo tema, y teniendo discusiones colaborativas. Noticias en Cuarto Grado Para el resto del año en Matemáticas, los estudiantes de cuarto grado ampliarán el entendimiento sobre las fracciones para representarlas como decimales en el lugar de las centésimas. Los estudiantes también aplicarán y extenderán estrategias para multiplicar hasta un número de 4 dígitos por un número de 1 dígito desde el período de calificación 2, a problemas que involucren productos de dos números de 2 dígitos. Se espera que los estudiantes apliquen y expliquen de manera flexible sus estrategias en base a la comprensión del valor posicional, las propiedades de las operaciones y la relación entre la multiplicación y la división. Durante la lectura, usando novelas realistas, los estudiantes determinarán el tema y compararán y contrastarán los eventos. Los estudiantes usarán el tema para hacer in resumen de partes del texto y discutir el punto de vista. Los estudiantes también leerán textos informativos y técnicos relacionados con contenido de ciencia y música. En Ciencias, los estudiantes exploran las esferas de la Tierra y analizan cómo esas esferas interactúan entre sí y gradualmente cambian la superficie de la Tierra. Además, los estudiantes identificarán la relación entre la formación de rocas y fósiles como una prueba más de la superficie cambiante de la Tierra a través del tiempo. En Estudios Sociales, los estudiantes continúan su estudio del período colonial al determinar cómo las características geográficas afectaron cómo vivían y trabajaban los colonos en las regiones de Medio y Nueva Inglaterra. Los estudiantes exploran cómo los colonos en estas regiones se adaptaron y modificaron el entorno e implementaron ideas y prácticas democráticas.

Noticias en Quinto Grado Gracias a todas las familias de quinto grado que han ayudado a que nuestro viaje a Filadelfia en abril sea tan exitoso. Los estudiantes realmente lo pasaron muy bien y pudieron conectar su aprendizaje sobre la Guerra Revolucionaria. En el último trimestre de este año escolar, los estudiantes participarán en la investigación y evaluación de una elección de carrera y determinarán si es una opción viable para su futuro. Los estudiantes buscarán plantas y animales durante la ciencia para determinar que las plantas y los animales tienen rasgos heredados de los padres y que la variación de estos rasgos existe en un grupo de organismos similares. Los estudiantes expandirán sus habilidades de alfabetización financiera a medida que estudian los mercados y la economía en estudios sociales. En matemáticas, los estudiantes multiplicarán decimales y estudiarán geometría. Wheaton Woods está muy orgulloso de nuestra clase de quinto grado de 2018. Esperamos verlos a todos el lunes, 11 de junio a las 6:30 p.m para la ceremonia de promoción. ¡Le deseamos que tengan un gran verano, Wheaton Woods te echará de menos!

Music Moments Several big music events are coming up so be sure and mark your calendar!  We have been invited again this year to perform at a cluster concert sponsored by Loiederman Middle School on March 20th at 7:00 p.m. Look for more information in the next few weeks and please mark your calendar so you can come support the Wheaton Woods Chorus! On April 25 th at 5:30 p.m., we will hear the 4th/5th grade chorus perform at International Night.  This event is always an exciting evening full of food, fun, and music.  June is an extremely busy performance month! We will kick things off with the 3rd grade recorder and 4th/5th grade instrumental concert on June 4th at 3:00 for students and 6:30 p.m. for family members and friends. Our instrumentalists have been working so hard and cannot wait to show you all they have accomplished this year! Please join us! On June 7th at 6:30 p.m., we will hear the Wheaton Woods 4th and 5th grade Chorus present their Spring Concert. If you haven’t heard them before, you’re in for a real treat! These kids are super talented!  See you soon!

International Night – April 25 (5:30 pm- 7:00 pm)If you have never attended this event at Wheaton Woods before, it is a great experience for you and your family. The night is a way to share and observe the rich cultural experiences that exist at Wheaton Woods. If you have been to this event before, expect to have a great time as usual along with several new activities. Please mark your calendars now and begin to think about volunteering for this event. You and your family can represent your country with food, refreshments, native clothing, and artifact displays. We hope to see you there!

Field Day – April 27Field Day is Friday, April 27. Students should bring a water bottle with their names, wear close-toed shoes such as sneakers and a positive attitude for physical education activities.

Town Hall MeetingsParents are welcomed and encouraged to join us at our student Town Hall Meetings on April 10, May 8, and June 5 at 9:25 am. Town Hall is a time when we celebrate students, share school news, and grow as a community of students and adults. Students will go directly to the APR and after Town Hall, they will have breakfast in their classrooms. Come join us!

Si ustedes son padres que trabajan fuera de la casa, por favor, planifiquen con sus vecinos o amistades el cuidado de sus hijos despues de la escuela en caso de una emergencia.

With our re-opening, we have a new “Kiss & Ride” student drop off circle. Please note the following information.

Wheaton Woods Elementary School Kiss & Ride(Student Drop-Off & Student Pick-Up Using Vehicles)

Student Safety– Students may not be dropped off prior to 9:10 a.m. as we have no staff to supervise students. Parents are responsible for the safety, supervision and care of your children prior to 9:10 a.m. Thank you for your cooperation.

Student Arrival Drop-Off – We have a Kiss & Ride circle for student drop-off. Students may not be dropped off prior to 9:10 a.m. as we have no staff to supervise students. The Kiss & Ride steps are:

1. Turn into Kiss & Ride Circle/Parking Lot.2. Stay in the right lane (follow arrows and cones).3. Wait in line until 9:10 am when students may exit cars at the direction of

WWES staff. 4. Do not pass other vehicles waiting in line.5. Do not leave your vehicle.6. Do not drive into the bus loop.

Student Dismissal Pick-Up – Your child will meet you at the Kiss & Ride circle for student pick-up.

1. Turn into Kiss & Ride Circle/Parking Lot.2. Stay in the right lane (follow arrows and cones).3. Wait in line until your student arrives after the 3:50 pm dismissal. 4. Do not pass other vehicles waiting in line.5. Do not leave your vehicle.6. Do not drive into the bus loop.

Bus Loop – To provide safety of all children, please do not drive in the bus loop and do not park in the bus loop. The bus loop is closed to all vehicles except buses. Bus information can be found on our school website at http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/wheatonwoodses/. Remember that parking is not permitted in the driveways of neighbors and certain portions of neighboring streets. Please do not have students exit vehicles on the street. Please use the student Kiss & Ride circle. We appreciate your continued cooperation and attentiveness to our crossing guards, staff, and school safety patrols. Thank you for your continued support.

Dismissal – Students are dismissed at 3:50 p.m. Only parents or designated adults and siblings may pick up students. Thank you for your cooperation.
