INTRODUCTION• WhatsApp was founded in 24th Feb, 2009 by US citizens by Brian Acton

and Jan Koum.• WhatsApp Inc. is based in Mountain View, California, United States. • It was acquired by Facebook on February 19, 2014 for approximately 19.3

billion dollar.• From 2015, it was officially made available for PCs through a web client

under the name WhatsApp web. • From 10th may 2016 WhatsApp is also available for windows operating

system.• WhatsApp is used in more than 109 countries . In India over 70 million

people use the messaging service.

• WhatsApp is a cross platform proprietary encrypted instant messaging app for smartphones.• One can send text messages, images, audios, videos, documents and

user location to a receiver or group of receivers.• WhatsApp privacy and personalization settings add to its appeal.• End to end encryption.

HOW IT WORKS AND TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THIS

• WhatsApp uses a customized version of Open standard Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP).• Upon installation, it generates account for every user using one's

phone number as the username. • WhatsApp software automatically compares all the phone numbers

from the device's address book with its main database of WhatsApp users to automatically add contacts to the user's WhatsApp contact list.

• The Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an application profile of the Extensible Mark-up Language (XML).

efficient push mechanism.• Existing web based mechanisms often make many unnecessary requests
