On any normal day most of us are strangers to each other, we walk past one another nonchalantly. The likelihood of what would this person do for me or I for them never crosses our minds. But on a day where it rains, the script is flipped and strangers instinctively and willingly be-come the only people the stranded can rely and depend on.

It rained, and poured. The weather we were supposed to enjoy turned into an-guish and despair. Something we can en-joy and be proud of is the righteous people of Jeddah, who without hesitation and heightened responsibility extended a help-ing hand to their city, with generous dona-tions and selfless volunteering.

They are being the change they want to see in the world. Where would the city be without you, our thanks and applause to you.

TENNISthe grand slam of entertaining sports

ORIGINSTennis a sport played between two play-ers (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Historians believe that tennis originated in France in the 12th century, but the ball was then struck with the palm of the hand. Racquets were intro-duced in the 16th century, and the game was called “tennis”. The modern game of tennis originated in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century as "lawn tennis". After its creation, lawn tennis spread throughout the upper-class English-speaking popula-tion before spreading around the world, and becoming an Olympic sport that is now played at all levels and ages.THE GAME A tennis match is determined through the best of three or five sets for certain impor-tant tournaments for men. A player wins a set by winning at least six games and at least two games more than the opponent. A set consists of a sequence of games played with service alternating between games. Games in turn, consist of points. A game consists of a sequence of points played with the same player serving. A game is won by the first player to have won at least four points in total and at least two points more than the opponent. Scores from zero to three points are described as "love", "fifteen", "thirty", and "forty" respectively. When each player has scored three points, the score is "deuce". A player scoring an-other point is given the "advantage". If one player has won six games and the op-ponent five, sets are played indefinitely until one player has a two-game lead. In the US Open the tie-break rule is applied. A tie-break, allows one player to win one more game and thus the set, to give a final set score of 7–6. A "love" set means that the loser of the set won zero games. COURTS Tennis is played on a rectangular, flat surface, usually grass, clay, a hard court

Page 25: What's Up Jeddah Magazine issue#22

of concrete and/or asphalt and occasion-ally carpet (indoor). Clay courts normally have a slower paced ball and a fairly true bounce with more spin. Hard courts have a faster-paced ball with a very true bounce. Grass courts have a faster-paced ball, and a more unpredictable bounce.

The court is 78 feet (23.77 m) long, and 27 feet (8.23 m) wide for singles matches and 36 ft (10.97 m) wide for doubles matches.

The baselines (Farthest back) define the width of the court; this is where a player stands when making a serve. The outermost lines that make up the length are called the doubles sidelines. These are the boundaries used when doubles is being played. The lines to the inside of the dou-bles sidelines are the singles sidelines and are used as boundaries in singles play. The line that runs across the center of a player's side of the court is called the service line be-cause the serve must be delivered into the area between the service line and the net on the receiving side. The line dividing the service line in two is called the center line or center service line. The boxes this cen-ter line created are called the service boxes; depending on a player's position, he or she will have to hit the ball into the opposite side of the service boxes when serving.TOURNAMENTS AND PLAYERS:Tennis is enjoyed by millions of recre-ational players and is also a hugely popu-lar worldwide spectator sport, especially the four Grand Slam tournaments also referred to as the Majors. The four Grand Slam tournaments are considered to be the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. The reasons behind this are the winning player receives higher points in the world ranking system and of course prizes that make the players reach the top ten of the Forbes list of richest athletes. The Majors are held annually and are the Australian Open, the French Open, Wim-

bledon, and the US Open. Other tourna-ments include the Olympic Games, Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Hopman Cup and of late the Dubai Open and the Doha Open. The ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season comprises of 63 tournaments held in 32 countries, the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season comprises of 53 events and Four Grand Slams in 33 countries.

Page 26: What's Up Jeddah Magazine issue#22

It was a beautiful summer day; I took my three kids to a park in Virginia, USA. We played on the swings for a while, and then they decided to explore the small for-est surrounding the area. I sat on a bench and began to daydream about the rest of our holiday and what else I wanted to do. I heard a scream, and two other louder screams that followed. I jumped and could not comprehend what was happening. My sons were running towards me and my daughter trailed behind. The boys were being attacked by a swarm of bees. Appar-ently the kids hit a bee hive with the long branches they were playing with and dis-turbed the colony. My oldest son had two bee stings, and my youngest had ten. We ran to the house nearby and began to treat the most painful bee stings with garlic (a home remedy to neutralize the venom). I did not notice during the fiasco that I had also got-ten stung. After the boys calmed down and all our tears dried up I placed a juicy clove of garlic and began to squeeze its sticky juice on my wound. Thankfully the pain dissipat-ed within minutes.

The brief and most terrifying experience this summer opened my eyes to a new body of knowledge and an ancient medication that I did not know existed. APITHERAPY, or “bee therapy” (from the Latin word apis meaning bee) is the medical application of products made by honeybees such as ven-om, honey, pollen, royal jelly, propolis, and beeswax. MEDICAL CONDITIONS TREATED BY APITHERAPY INCLUDE MULTIPLE SCLE-ROSIS, ARTHRITIS, WOUNDS, PAIN, GOUT, SHINGLES, BURNS, TENDONITIS, AND INFECTIONS.

Treatments with honey bees as a source of natural medicine have existed for many centuries and it is believed that they have been practiced since human medicine be-gan. The three ancient Great Civilizations (Egypt, Greece, and China) known for their extremely advanced medical systems prac-ticed Apitherapy. The “Father of Medicine”, Hippocrates himself, strongly believed in the healing virtues of bee venom for treating

painful ailments such as arthritis. Nowadays, expanding scientific evi-

dence advocates that various bee products promote healing by improving circulation as an anticoagulant, decreasing inflammation as an anti-inflammatory, and stimulating a healthy immune response. I experienced this first hand, by accident of course. A few months before I went to the states I had sprained my ankle causing it to be arthritic and very painful. After the bee sting the pain disappeared. I was intrigued to learn why.

It baffled me to discover how much I didn’t know about the method of Apitherapy and how potent it truly was. This potency is caused by the injection of a substance called Apitoxin from the bee’s stinger into the skin. Apitoxin contains several strong peptides (proteins) such as Melittin, histamines and other biogenic amines. The protein Melit-tin is a strong anti-inflammatory agent that is said to be a million times more powerful than cortisone. This I know is true!

TREE POSEJust like a tree, we will have a firm root in the earth and grow-ing up towards the skies

HOW TO DO THE POSE: Stand with your feet facing forward. Lift one foot and rest the sole on your inner thigh (or below the knee ) of your standing leg, opening your chest, anchor your tail bone and lengthen your spine, bring your palms together and take 5 breathes. Then repeat on other foot.

For a lot of people particularly a begin-ner, like I once was balancing poses seemed really challenging. Often it was hard to balance on one foot imagining the fear of falling over. The secret to keeping still is a stable foundation and spreading the weight of your body evenly. The tree pose assist in releasing mental stress through distrib-uting the weight of one's head, neck and shoulders. Our head is the heaviest part of our body did u know that? that is why, people who r stressed out with work, excess physical movements and emotional prob-lems creates stiffness of muscles usually on the right neck line down to the shoul-der blades... Everything in our body's con-nected...

It is really the median line of one's body, the vertical axis that is dividing the face and neck that runs down to the cen-tre of the body and pelvis, between the legs into the floor. So the best way is to work from the ground up, if you wish to establish a strong foundation in the pose. You begin by opening the doors of perception in the feet and best way to achieve this is through practice.

The tree pose builds up muscles on your ankles, calves, spine, hips and thighs. This will give you the awareness of your chest, thighs and especially shoulders, it rein-forces your confidence, nervous balance, improves concentration and focus.

THE BODY OF A WOMANToned, firm, always el-egant and confident feline power with strength training

Arab women are well known for their strong sense of fashion. In all my years of being here, I noticed how elegant Arab women are. Take a look at some of the Arab women in the media. Queen Rania of Jordan, she is well known for her amazing sense of fashion and unbelievably fit body. When you look at any lady in an outfit, the way she holds herself and the way the clothes hang on her body make a differ-ence. Why not match the strong sense of fashion with a strong frame!

Focussing on the optimum word here STRONG a lot of girls get worried when I mention the words "WEIGHTS" or "STRENGTH TRAINING" due to the unfortunate images spread by the media, over developed women with huge arms and legs is the first image to mind. That is the extreme case with weight/strength train-ing women that compete in these sports whether it is Olympic body building or weight lifting. They will be doing activity beyond that of an average person. So where you see the exaggerated musculature on some female athletes etc. it is profoundly evident that they are doing beyond the av-erage daily workout.

Having a strong body does not mean big muscles, and bigger is not always bet-ter when it comes to muscles. Muscles that are strong and can endure a long duration of activity and pressure cannot be built up. Although it does seem that when an exercise programme is commenced, par-ticularly if it involves high-intensity weight lifting, the muscles may seem to puff up right away. This is one of the major reasons women avoid weights - they fear it will turn them into the Incredible Hulk! However, research has shown that women gener-ally do not gain bulk from strength train-ing as they do not have adequate amounts of bulk-building testosterone (roughly 10 to 30 percent less). It is at this point that most girls get scared and shy away from

Page 29: What's Up Jeddah Magazine issue#22

STRENGTH TRAINING CAN BE DONE AT HOME OR IN THE GYM. CONSIDER THE OPTIONS:●Body weight. You can do many exercises with little or no equipment. Try push-ups, pull-ups, abdominal crunches and leg squats.●Resistance tubing. Resistance tubing is inexpensive, lightweight tubing that provides re-sistance when stretched. ●You can choose from many types of resistance tubes in nearly any sporting goods store.●Free weights. Barbells and dumbbells are classic strength training tools.●Weight machines. Most fitness centres offer vari-ous resistance machines. ●You can also invest in weight machines for use at home.

continuing their programs. You definitely are not imagining your body getting bigger, although it may be something of an optical illusion, when any weight training begins the body realises how hard it’s working, considering that previous workouts might have consisted of a cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows, watching your favou-rite soap opera on the television. The body then decides to store carbohydrates to use for water and energy. With new exercises you often see a small weight gain and an increase in muscular size from this water. So basically, our muscles are swollen with water and no one wants that! But this is only temporary as soon the body knows it is serious with the consistent challeng-ing workout it will regulate itself and not store the excess carbohydrates. If you stay on a regular weight-training program for at least a month, you will notice that the bloated look decreases and a more sculpt-ed shape is just around the corner. If you stay well hydrated throughout your work-out and your entire day, water will be read-ily available to your muscles, and you will need to store fewer carbohydrates to make water. So next time "STRENGTH TRAIN-ING” is brought up in conversation you might want to think about the benefits. INCREASED STRENGTHWe were not made to be frail damsels in distress. We should be able to carry our shopping up a flight of stairs without col-lapsing at the end of it. We should also have the strength to carry our children! Do everyday activities without the daily aches and pains. NCREASED BONE DENSITYStrength training and other weight bearing activities such as walking, jogging, resis-tance exercises put a load on the skeleton and in turn increase the bone mineral den-sity. Since osteoporosis is such a threat to women; especially since most of the daily activities here is just sitting on the couch

or at cafes, it is a wise decision to start a strength training program. Strength training not only fights osteoporosis but prevents the possibility of getting it. So remember it is never too late to start, Re-search has shown that weight training improves your bone mineral density by as much as 13 percent in just 6 months. This is very important as women are more prone to osteoporosis in old age.IIMPROVED BALANCESince strength training builds a strong foundation. Strengthening the legs and core section means an increase in overall balance and coordination reducing the risk of injury; especially important for the older adults.MPROVED MOOD AND INCREASED CONFIDENCE Weight training has been shown to im-prove women's self confidence and reduce the symptoms of clinical depression. You will feel like a real pro in the gym!INCREASED MUSCLE MASS AND DECREASED BODY FATStrength Training does lead to larger mus-cle or hypertrophy, but there are many ad-vantages for women to have more muscle. First of all, a sculpted, tight frame is far more attractive than a skinny, scrawny starved body of a model. Clothes do look better on a strong solid frame. Secondly, the more muscle you have the stronger you are. Thirdly because muscle is highly met-abolic the more muscle you have on your body, the more calories burnt during work out, as muscle needs to burn calories not only to function but by just being on your body. So basically muscles burn calories without having to do any work. This is why men seem to be able to eat what they like and never seem to put on weight, because in general, men have more muscle than women. Each pound of muscle you gain through weight training can burn up to another 50 calories a day. By weight train-ing just a few times a week you can build

nearly 2 pounds of muscle over 2 months and don't worry, you will be losing at least 3 pounds of fat at the same time so you'll be leaner and more toned.

Thousands of people visit galleries and museums every day, experiencing the most outstanding paintings ever created by the finest artists to roam the earth. Master-pieces are very valuable and rarely sold. The world’s most famous paintings, espe-cially works done before 1800, are gener-ally owned by museums and literally price-less. Many people are collectors of fine arts and may want to sell, donate or even keep paintings as investments. In any of these scenarios, determining an accurate value for a painting is crucial.

Paintings are generally valued by the artist and era; provenance is an art term that means the paintings financial history, who has bought it over the years, who sold

01.Research the market to find out what other artists are charging in your area. Prices will be more in big cities such as New York or London.

02.Remember the price in a gallery isn't what the artist receives; the gallery takes a lot of commission. Check how much it is.

03.Work out how much you spent making the painting excluding time. This isn't only ma-terials such as canvas, paint and brushes but also overheads such as electricity, rent of studio space or a model.

04.Keep a record of how long it took to make a painting – time also costs money though initially you may not get much for it.

05.Add something for your experience and reputation. If you're only setting out, you obviously can't expect as much as an artist with an established reputation.

06.If you have spent money marketing an ex-hibition or promoting an open-studio day, add something for this too.

07.Look at your final price and compare it again with local prices. Is it realistic given the market and your reputation? You can always increase your prices next time.

PASSION FOR PAINTINGS Paintings a wealth of expression in every stroke

it, where has it been displayed or exhibit-ed. This information helps with tracing the artist and time period of a painting. Any records or documents proving the iden-tity of the artist or any previous owners facilitate finding the accurate value. The condition the painting is in is also at a high regard when valued, if damaged the price significantly drops. Paintings get assessed by galleries, museums and experts. The value of a painting is measured by price per inch.

TIPSIt's a harsh fact that oil paintings still gen-erally command higher prices than other mediums. Don't price your work too low. If you don't value it, why should a potential buyer?Only sell your best work. Initially because you're trying to establish a reputation and later on because you're trying to maintain it.If you want to include a painting in an ex-hibition because of it's one of your best but don't really want to sell it, don't be tempted to price it high in the hope it won't. What if it does? It's risky significantly undercutting the price set in a gallery through a later private sale. You risk alienating the gallery owner who displayed your work in the first place.

We were first mesmerized by her super-cool Out of Line series during Art Dubai 2010. Post Art Dubai it has been increas-ingly challenging to keep up with her exhi-bitions worldwide, until this glimpse into the artful mind of Jowhara2010 PROVED TO BE A BUSY YEAR... MARK ITS HIGH-LIGHTSAlhamdulillah I’ve been truly blessed. Yes, it has been a busy, exciting, whirl wind of a year. It kicked off in NYC with some group exhibitions with some very interest-ing artists. I then had a show in Chicago and at some international art fairs in Chi-cago, Mexico and Basel, after that came Berlin where I got the chance to work with the Edge of Arabia crew and curator Rami Farouk (of Traffic, UAE). The highlight of this show was finally meeting many of the Saudi artists whose work I’d been famil-iar with for years. MashAllah, Saudi’s got talent. A really great source to familiarize yourselves with some of Saudi’s contem-porary artists is The Greenbox Museum of Contemporary Saudi Art in Amsterdam (http://www.greenboxmuseum.com). They have a very comprehensive direc-tory, which includes some very impressive work. Then came Amsterdam for a solo exhibition followed soon after by Shanghai for Nabatt: A Sense of Being (http://www.nabatt.com), a museum exhibition of con-temporary Saudi Art which was phenom-enal and very well received by the public and press alike. I then had a solo show in Kuwait, which was a definite highlight. It was the first time, outside of Art Dubai, that I’d exhibited work in the Middle East and just talking to people confirmed that the issues I am tackling here are relevant. After that I headed back to New York for my first solo show in the city. Soon after came Art Basel Miami where I was showing with Witzenhausen Gallery at both Scope Miami and a solo show at Zoom, a new art fair the focus of which was contemporary

art from the Middle East (http://www.zo-omartfair.com).SHOULD YOU BE ASKED FOR A BIO HOW WOULD IT GO?Well my bio is on my website (www.jow-haraalsaud.com) so I’ll just give you the brief rundown. I went to high school in Jeddah (What’s up Dar AlFikr?), Wellesley for college and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts for Graduate school. I moved back to Saudi, almost switched fields (no, not banking, Architecture and Industrial Design) then realized I was still spending most of my time in the studio, so I decided to pursue a career in fine arts after all. And you know the rest.YOU TOUCHED CENSORSHIP THROUGH YOUR ART, A TOPIC MANY WOULD CONSIDER TABOO. WHY IS

THAT? (YOU COULD HAVE CHOSEN A SOFTER PATH YOU KNOW)Actually I really couldn’t. I would take my camera out in Jeddah and get stopped by the cops, I would take pictures indoors and no one wanted their photos shown… I had to find a way to make work that could exist in both private and public spaces and this is what I ended up with. This isn’t something I set out to critique it just found me (at every turn). And while censorship or shall I say our social taboos may have been the start-ing point, I feel that the work has long since transcended that. This is about human in-teraction, about photography, about meth-ods of storytelling; it’s really just about how we share our day to day. The narratives are

so open ended that most people can project themselves and their own issues onto them but that ultimately says more about the viewer than the work. Also, I have no inter-est in making benign decorative work that sits comfortably above a couch and speaks to nothing but the colours of the curtains.THE SERIES SHOWS SAUDI WOMEN IN A SENSE THE WORLD CAN RELATE TO, A STRIKING IDEA, WHERE DID IT COME FROM?It’s hardly revolutionary to show us as we are, rather than how either the East or West wants to see us. Again, I did not set out to make some grand statement or try to change our “image” but if you make honest work, patterns emerge. Who doesn’t have these photos at home? Been on Facebook lately? I’m just saying. And by the way, I never said all the people in the work were Saudi. I said that they are my nearest and dearest, and I don’t usually let nationali-ties dictate who that is. Besides, without an obvious cultural signifier (a subha, tarha, shmagh etc.) can you really differentiate? We are all much more similar than many would like to admit, but when stripped down to basics, there’s no denying it.YOU'VE BEEN EXHIBITING YOUR WORK ALL AROUND THE WORLD, WHICH WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE EX-HIBITION AND WHY?Honestly, every exhibition has been mem-orable in its own right. The thing that ties them together is the people involved. Whether they are artists, curators, writ-ers, and anyone that responds to the work somehow, they are usually the most memo-rable and inspiring part. I can also tell you that I really enjoy being in exhibitions that focus more on the work and less on where I’m from, because then the work is placed in a proper context and you’d be amazed what interesting points come up when it’s placed in conversation with work that con-cerns itself with similar issues.YOUR WORK IS PART OF THE COLLECTION AT VICTO-RIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM IN LONDON, HOW DID THIS

COME ABOUT?I believe Martin Barnes, the senior curator of photographs at the Victoria and Albert museum, saw my work at Paris Photo last year and took an interest. The rest hap-pened through a lovely lady by the name of Rose Issa who has a gallery in London (Rose Issa Projects, www.roseissa.com) and has been doing great work with con-temporary Middle Eastern artists for over 20 years now. They knew I’d worked with her in the past and approached her directly.SOME OF YOUR WORKS ARE OWNED BY PRIVATE COL-LECTORS, HOW DOES A PERSON GO ABOUT ACQUIRING A PIECE OF YOUR ART?I’m represented by a few galleries interna-tionally (also on my website). In Saudi Ara-

bia its Athr gallery in Jeddah and collectors usually contact the gallery for any inquiries about the work, standard procedure.HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU RECEIVE A REQUEST FOR A SOLO EXHIBITION? AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT THAN A GROUP SHOW?It’s always exciting when someone feels strongly enough about the work to want to exhibit it. Group shows are great when they are about storytelling, photography (issues of “documentary” or “manipulation” also digital vs. film) or even portraiture. Those are the ones I get most excited about, be-cause the other artists are bringing differ-ent points of view to the table and that’s always interesting. Solo shows tend to be more focused on what I’m dealing with.

They also allow for more work so you get a more comprehensive view of a series. So yes, they are different, but equally reward-ing.JUST TO CLARIFY, THESE ARE PHOTOGRAPHS, COR-RECT? AND THERE’S NO DIGITAL MANIPULATION? CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PROCESS?Yes, these are photographs. The manipula-tion is all done by hand on colour negatives and they are printed in a traditional colour darkroom. No Photoshop or ink involved, just a large format negative, a light box and some dental tools. It’s a long drawn out process that took some time to master, but I enjoy the process of detailed handmade work.NAME A SPOT/GALLERY YOU'D LOVE TO EXHIBIT YOUR

CREATIONS AT IN SAUDI & ABROAD? AND HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT CHOOSING A GALLERY/SPACE?Honestly, there are museums and galler-ies that I love all over the world (because of their collections or roster of artists) and would be honoured to show with. But I’m quickly learning that it’s more important to work with people who really understand and respect the work, as well as my inten-tions. And inshaAllah the rest will happen naturally.SAY YOU'VE BEEN APPOINTED MINISTER OF CULTURE IN THE KINGDOM, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR 3 MOST IM-PORTANT DECISIONS?I laughed out loud when I read this ques-tion. What on earth would qualify me to ever become Minister of Culture??? “Khally

ilkhubz lilkhabbaz” is what I say. While my first instinct was “I’m going to leave this one alone” let me rephrase it slightly. If I were to suggest three things to our Minis-ter of Culture (who by the way, has proven to be quite supportive of the arts) I would say education and awareness are key. The only way the arts will ever be taken seri-ously and viewed as a proper discipline in Saudi, and by that I mean one worthy of celebration and respect (think Poetry), is once it’s introduced into the educational system as a legitimate field of study, not an extracurricular activity or hobby. I went to school for this, and if I didn’t believe in its transformative nature, I wouldn’t have spent 8 years of my life immersed in Film

and Fine Arts. My second suggestion would be proper museums (many of the world’s best museums are government funded) not only to showcase and preserve the works of the plethora of Saudi artists that are active all over the world, but also to bring some of what the world has to offer to Saudi. We shouldn’t have to leave in order to succeed internationally as artists, or be exposed to the rich visual culture that the world has to offer as a viewer. And my third suggestion would be artist grants and residencies. Not everyone is in a position to fund their own projects or have the space to execute them. For many of the Saudi artists that I’ve met, grants could be the difference between hav-ing to maintain a day job (to pay the bills and support families) and dedicating the necessary time and energy to what they truly love and not only have a natural tal-ent for, but are willing to go the extra mile to achieve. So yeah, those are my two cents.WHERE'S YOUR NEXT STOP?New Hampshire. For an exhibition titled iImage: the Uncommon Portrait at The Portsmouth Museum of Contemporary Art. There are some wonderful artists par-ticipating, such as WK Interact and Do Ho Suh, so I’m looking forward to it. After that there’s The Armory in NYC, Art Dubai and a solo show at Athr Art in Jeddah this com-ing April inshaAllah.A DECLARATION?Go big or go home.

HAMANN VICTORY II GALLARDO LP560turns the Gallardo LP560-4 into a technology and design winner

SUPER CAR

Page 39: What's Up Jeddah Magazine issue#22

HAMANN already presented the super sports car Victory based on the first Lam-borghini Gallardo. With the latest Gallardo LP560-4, now also the new HAMANN Vic-tory II is introduced. The car body becomes broader and the engine performance as well as the amount of carbon parts is sig-nificantly increased.

And what is the most essential part of a Lamborghini? Right, it is the wing doors. And nobody really knows why the Gallardo is not equipped with them straight away. HAMANN offers these for the Victory II. In addition, they offer an entire refine-ment of the original body design which starts with a new front apron in Race-de-sign with a centre carbon part. With new

fenders in the front and fender extensions in the back, the Victory II renders an even more remarkable appearance. Also, the ex-tended side skirts and the air inlet on the roof – available in carbon as well – confirm this impression. The back of the car is en-hanced by a diffuser and a newly designed rear wing which pushes the car onto the road at high speeds. HAMANN offers the rear wing either in fibre glass or the ultra light and persistent carbon. On top of that, a carbon layer can be applied to the bonnet.

HAMANN equips the Victory II with 20 inch Edition Race rims with a special varnish in order to emphasize the new dy-namic look. At the same time, the reduced unsprung masses improve the handling and the acceleration and braking response. The recommended wheel/tyre combina-tion is 9.5Jx20 inches with 235/30ZR20 tyres at the front and 13Jx20 rims with 325/25ZR20 tyres at the back.

By adjusting the engine electronics, HAMANN squeezes additional perfor-mance out of this Italian stallion, increas-ing its power to 427 kW/580 hp with a maximum torque of 575 Newton metres. Therefore, the HAMANN Victory II reach-es an impressive 328 km/h top speed.

The impressive V10-Sound turns even more remarkable by applying an end muf-fler to the serial end pipes.

The interior of the HAMANN Vic-tory II is enhanced by a 14-part carbon set which includes decorative blends, the steering wheel and the door openers. The HAMANN-sports seats with the carbon back render a perfect seating position. If desired, the HAMANN upholstery depart-ment can offer anything to make the cus-tomers’ hearts beat faster. Personalised floor mats or entire leather equipment, ev-erything is handmade by master craftsmen. Individually designed for you and fitted to your car by experts.

THE MERCEDES-BENZ CLS a generation ahead of the competition

SALON CAR

AUTOS.REVIEW

Page 41: What's Up Jeddah Magazine issue#22

The CLS four-door Coupé the elegance and dynamism of a coupé with the comfort and functionality of a saloon

The new CLS continues with the pio-neering role of its predecessor and at the same time shows itself to be a brand-new star on the scene. In 2003 the four-door Coupé was born and the Mercedes-Benz CLS immediately established itself as a new style icon. The proportions have stayed the same - and yet everything is dif-ferent the second generation of this design trendsetter has adopted a completely new look. The new CLS‘s refined sportiness with a new design language, higher output and lower fuel consumption engine, more agility with lightweight construction and

new increased visibility and more safety features.

The outer body of the new CLS is a dis-tinctive and muscular sports car with an athletic character.

The eye striking exterior reminiscent of the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG the in-novative front design with a highlighted longer bonnet and a grille formed sepa-rately, with the centrally placed star on the grill strengthening the brand identity. The typical CLS outline, with its elegantly long proportions, is the dominating attribute of the new model, at the back the novel de-sign feature called the dropping line where the structure slopes backwards represent-ing a new interpretation present in historic

Mercedes sports cars. The large, elongated dark air inlets with black grilles also add to the vehicle's athletic appearance. The flared wheel arches resemble the power-ful thighs of a feline predator waiting to pounce.

Another distinguishing feature comes in the form of the LED High Performance headlamps, which are the world's first to offer the entire regular dynamic light func-tions using LED technology. The headlam-ps’ greater visibility and full functionality with their 71 LED lamps look exciting; and they serve to underline the unmistakable appearance of the CLS and bringing an entirely new level of safety to night time driving.

The interior of the CLS is also distin-guished by a timeless design which com-bines straightforward sophistication with innovative details and handcrafted perfec-tion. An attention-grabbing feature is the wrap-around effect of the cockpit extend-ing from the driver’s door to the passen-ger’s door. As a design trendsetter, allow-ing customers to choose from five interior colours, five trim designs, three qualities of leather and also three exclusive wood types. Handcrafted perfection is reflected in details such as the stitched seat covers. The CLS lives up to its role as a design icon, by setting new standards in interiors with its wide variety of individualisation op-tions resulting in a CLS that is a one-off piece.

The CLS engines have higher output, yet up to 25 percent lower fuel consump-tion. All models as a standard have 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and all engines are fitted with the ECO start/stop function for reduced consump-tion in urban traffic. The ECO start/stop function works on the simple fact that the

engine doesn’t have to be on when the car is at a standstill and does this automatical-ly. The 4 BlueEFFICIENCY engines of the CLS with two 6-cylinder models the CLS 350 (306hp) and CLS 350 CDI (265hp) with 25% reduced fuel consumption and the CLS 250 4-cylinder with fuel con-sumption of 5.1 litre diesel/100 km similar to a compact car. The fourth engine is the CLS 500 (406hp) V8 engine which features biturbocharging for the first time, previ-ously only seen in the 12-cylinder engine used in the S-Class.

Lightweight construction and aerody-namics increases the efficiency of the CLS, it is the first vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to have frameless, all-aluminium doors. Apart from the doors, the bonnet, front wings, boot lid, parcel shelf, various sup-port profiles and substantial parts of the suspension and engines are all made of al-uminium providing intelligent lightweight construction that plays a decisive role in bridging the classic conflict of objectives between low weight and high strength in the new CLS. Aerodynamics plays an im-

portant part in the outstanding efficiency of the

Mercedes-Benz CLS reducing wind re-sistance by up to ten percent.

Electromechanical power steering is the ultimate in driving dynamics to the very best in long-distance ride comfort. The steering system makes its world debut in the new CLS. This pioneering innova-tion makes a new and radical contribution to the relationship between driver, car and road.

There are over 12 new driving assis-tance features the one I thought was most exciting is the vibrating steering wheel warning system that warns the driver dis-creetly and highly effectively of any colli-sion possibilities.

The Mercedes- Benz CLS distinctive elegant coupé outline combined with the flawlessly crafted lavish interior makes this car a prominent luxury must have as it cruises the roads demanding admiration by its competitors and fans alike.

GUARDING THE STREETS FROM THE SKIES The behind the scenes heroes whose everyday task is to save lives

When the exciting world of flying and the righteous world of first aid combine the result is an efficient and essential service, dedicated to do the best they can to ensure our well being. What’s Up caught up with helicopter pilot Khalid Jawa and here is what he had to say about this valuable ser-vice... WHAT IS EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES?Emergency Medical Services or EMS is a new ambulance service in which the vehi-cle used to transport the injured is a heli-copter. This new service was launched six months ago and has provided unparalleled speed when transporting patients from the accident to the hospital. At the moment EMS is present in Riyadh and Jeddah and

will shortly begin in Dammam. HOW COULD SOMEONE BECOME A HELICOPTER PILOT? The requirements for a helicopter pilot are to be medically fit, and passing a flying medical exam to get an aviation medical certificate. Having a good level of English and good communication skills, a good hand eye coordination. Having a pilot li-cense requires studying at a flying school and having enough financial support to cover expenses. Having a sense of adven-ture is necessary and of course you can’t be scared of heights. HOW LONG IS THE TRAINING TO GET CERTIFIED? To get certified which means to have a flying license it takes one to two years de-pending on your progress, it’s always better

to support the license with a degree, I have a social degree in aeronautical science, which taught me a lot about the physics of flying, meteorology, accident investigation and aviation law.WHERE DO YOU WORK AND WHAT DOES THE JOB COMPLY OF?I work for the Saudi Flying Ambulance under the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, the Saudi ambulance program has recent-ly been introduced by Prince Faisel Bin Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz AlSaud. The bases are located in the King Faisel Naval base in the south of Jeddah and Alshumaisi air force base. The main purpose of the EMS (Emergency Medical Services) is to re-spond to major accidents on the outskirts

AUTOS.INTERVIEW

Page 45: What's Up Jeddah Magazine issue#22

of the city and transport the injured as quickly as possible to a designated hospital to receive medical attention. DESCRIBE A NORMAL DAY IN THE LIFE OF A HELICOP-TER PILOT? In this field of work we have to be ready and available to provide a 24 hour ser-vice, where we do 12 hour shifts for three to four days a week. We report to base at 6:00 am or pm depending on the shift. If there is an accident (Allah forbid) we are airborne with the flight and medical crew on board. We receive on average two calls a day, Hamdilla some days we do not get any requests, other times we are called back to base from a mission due to the demise of the injured person this of course is a pro-

cedure to offer the helicopter services to another possible accident that may occur. TAKE US THROUGH THE STEPS OF AN EMERGENCY PROCEDURE?When there is an accident we are airborne with the flight and medical crew on board in less than five minutes. Once we take off we coordinate with the dispatcher and in-quire about location and number of inju-ries and we inform him of an expected time of arrival. Dispatch will coordinate with highway patrol, to block the road and set a safe landing zone for the helicopter. As soon as we land the medical team evaluate and stabilize the case and ready the patient to be transported to king Abdulaziz hospi-tal (Almahjar) where the patient is treated.

After that we go back to base, and disinfect the aircraft and ready it for the next flight with fuel and checks which takes about 30 minutes.HOW FAST DO YOU RESPOND TO EMERGENCY CALLS? I mentioned we are up in the air in less than 5mins. Our purpose is to transfer the patient in the golden hour. The golden hour is the time from when the accident oc-curred to transporting the wounded to the hospital. THE HELICOPTER REACHES SPEEDS OF 270KM/HR AND IT TAKES FIFTEEN MINUTES TO REACH JEDDAH FROM MAKKAHWHAT IS THE MODEL OF THE HELICOPTER YOU FLY? WHAT ARE ITS USES?There are 2 types of helicopters they are BELL 412 and AGUSTA 139, the AGUSTA is faster as it reaches speeds of 270km/hr, it has a wider range and is used for longer trips. Bell is smaller and is easier to land in a congested area; the BELL goes up to 220km/hr. All helicopters are equipped with 2 beds and 2 doctors. Helicopters can land nearly anywhere which makes them very useful in such situations, highways as an example as long as there are no obsta-cles preventing the helicopter from land-ing. Helicopters fly straight which takes away a lot of time wasting from traffic. IN THE CASE OF LOSING BOTH ENGINES AND THE HELICOPTER’S POWER IS LOST, WHAT DO YOU DO?We do something called auto rotation where we can land safely to any ground fit for landing, auto rotate is using the flow of air as you are descending to keep the rotors spinning and making a gradual descent. To produce lift right before touchdown the rotor blades angle is slightly changed and this cushions the helicopter gently to the ground. Pilots are trained to do this at fly-ing school over and over again to the point it becomes second nature. WHAT OTHER WORK DOES THE EMS PROVIDE?

www.whatsupksa.net45

AUTO.INTERVIEW

Page 46: What's Up Jeddah Magazine issue#22

Well, we also take part in rescue missions in the holy sites when it is the Hajj sea-son; we start off by preparing the base in Makkah two weeks prior to the start of the pilgrimage. The base in Arafa has six heli-copters on standby 24 hours a day for any general accident that requires emergency attention. After that we move the equip-ment to Madinah (Maternity hospital base) where we are stationed for a month because most pilgrims visit Madinah after going to Makkah. During the holy month of Ramad-han we are on high alert due to many peo-ple travelling to and from Makkah. It takes about fifteen minutes to reach the King Ab-dulaziz hospital in Jeddah from Makkah. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER AS A HELICOPTER PILOT? AND WHAT WAS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT?I used to work for ARAMCO where I was in the production chain and our job was to transport employees from the on shore airport to the oil rig platforms out at sea in Dhahran. Now I work for the Saudi flying ambulance in Jeddah which I have been talking about. Proud moments for me per-sonally are every time I have a patient on board I feel I’m doing a good thing and the right thing for a fellow human, you feel self satisfaction it’s beyond description when helping a person in need. YOU MUST HAVE SEEN MANY DIFFERENT SITUATIONS BEING UP IN THE SKY, WHAT WOULD BE THE MOST INTERESTING THING THAT YOU HAVE SEEN?I wouldn’t call this interesting but it is im-perative that people know this very simple fact; people don’t realize the dangers of high speed driving on themselves and others. I’ve seen terrible instances where people’s bodies have been completely de-formed and mutilated. I cannot stress the importance of speed limits; it is the differ-ence between surviving and dying. DID YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO FLY A PLANE BEFORE FLYING A HELICOPTER? No it is not necessary, I can fly both but you can do either.

WHAT DO YOU DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF? I pass my time when I’m not working by riding my motorcycle or playing water sports. A MESSAGE TO OUR READERS?Stick to the speed limit and don’t try to come close and take pictures, when we land a lot of people crowd and start filming us which is completely inappropriate and does not help the patient in any way.

04.HALO: REACH XBOX360Before the discovery and destruction of an ancient alien ringworld, before a teeming parasitic enemy threatened Earth, before a soldier called John-117 made a new name for himself, humanity fought to defend the planet Reach. And though Halo: Reach is a prequel to all the Halo games that have come before, it represents the evolutionary pinnacle of the series. From the expertly tuned combat to the expansive level design and from the innovative online integration to the robust creation tools, all the pillars of Halo's success are in top form here, tied together seamlessly by an elegant and intuitive menu system. While the core mechanics remain very familiar, invigorating new elements and extensive customization options make it so there are more ways to enjoy yourself than ever. Halo: Reach is one of the most fully featured games on consoles today, and it's also one of the best. One of the first things you notice about Halo: Reach is the refined menu system. In addition to presenting the main gameplay modes, the main menu displays the status of your friends who are playing Reach and allows you to peruse their service records and invite them to your party with ease.

06.GOLDEN SUN: DARK DAWN

BUSIN NINTENDO DS Dark Dawn picks up 30 years after the events of the 2003 Game Boy Advance game Golden Sun: The Lost Age. The action is set in the fantastical, and flat, world of Weyard and explores the aftermath of the events that transpired in previous games. Despite the upbeat ending of the last game, "and they all lived happily ever after" doesn't quite apply to how things have turned out. While the world was saved from doom through the release of elemental energies known as alchemy, there have been consequences. You're cast in the role of Matthew, the son of two of the heroes from the GBA games, who, thanks to a chain of events on a fateful day, send the young hero on a journey to save the world just like his old man did. If you're not familiar with the original games, don't fret; key words and phrases in conversations can be clicked on to access information in an in-game encyclopedia for those who like their lore. However, if you have played the previous games, you'll be pleased to see a plethora of nods to the people, places, and events in the GBA titles, which adds some weight to the game's story. Longtime fans will also be pleased to see the game's not so subtle set up for a sequel at journey's end.

02.SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED: NEED FOR SPEED

PC Nat Geo Amazing! (a.k.a. National Geographic Amazing) is National Geographic as you've never seen it before—a celebration of the world's 100 most fascinating people, places, and things, showcased in a large-format, full-colour trade paperback. The thrilling images, incredible stories, and cutting-edge design of NATGEO Amazing! Will have you doing double-takes at some of the most fascinating and fun information in the world, including Amazing Animals, Interesting People, Weird but True Facts, Ancient Discoveries with Modern Twists, Natural Wonders, and more! You'll find that truth is often stranger— and way more arresting—than fiction as you witness natural beauty, raw emotion, and odd phenomena through the discerning prism of the people who know the world best: National Geographic. We hope that each and every page inspires you to say the book's name: AMAZING!

03.DEAD SPACE 2

PS3Isaac Clarke, the unluckiest space engineer of the 26th century, is more unfortunate than ever in Dead Space 2. 2008's superb Dead Space took the style of survival horror shooter action exemplified by games like Resident Evil 4 and meshed it with an atmospheric deep-space setting and some terrific, distinctly sci-fi gameplay elements, creating something that felt simultaneously familiar and unique. Dead Space 2, on the other hand, will feel thoroughly familiar to those who have played the original; its few improvements over Dead Space are minor tweaks rather than game changers. But blasting the limbs off of hideous necromorphs remains tremendously satisfying, and although the pacing lags a bit during the game's middle portions, this second outing packs more than enough scares and surprises to make stepping back into Isaac Clarke's suit extremely worthwhile. In addition, a new multiplayer component successfully translates Dead Space's particular breed of dismemberment-focused combat into a pulse-pounding team-based experience that casts you as both humans and as the foul necromorphs. And, at least at the time of release, the PlayStation 3 version includes a hefty bonus: the great on-rails shooter Dead Space Extraction (previously a Wii exclusive), at no additional cost.

05.PRINNY 2 PSP In the Disgaea series, Prinnies are nothing more than cannon fodder. Being used as grenades more often than fighters is an awful fate, so it was easy to take in their cheerful disposition and feel sorry for their lot in life. But after playing a few levels in their second chance in a lead role, you might take abject pleasure in punishing these combustible birds in whatever way possible. Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood is structurally identical to its predecessor. As in Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero, you traverse through side-scrolling levels hopping across platforms while fighting enemies until you reach the end boss. But the problems that erected a formidable barrier the first time around haven't been addressed in the slightest. You still have to wrestle with rigid controls the whole way through, and the frequent deaths are now so grossly unfair that it's unrelentingly aggravating. The careful balance between challenge and frustration has been upset, opening the door for bouts of head-pounding agony as you stubbornly force yourself through each stage. Tricky-but-rewarding boss fights provide adequate enticements, but there is too much misery in this demonic tale to make it worth playing for all but the most committed individuals.

01.FLUIDITY WIIBasing a 2D platforming puzzle game on a substance as familiar as water might not seem like the most inspired of ideas, but the more time you spend with Hydroventure--known as Fluidity in the US--the more you realise how great it is. Like the water you control, the puzzles you solve have a flow, effortlessly merging into each other to create an experience that always challenges you yet never makes you feel stupid. These are brilliantly designed, each of them guided by the real-world physics of water, making them immensely satisfying to solve. The vast collection of hidden content means that there are hours upon hours of well-crafted puzzles in Hydroventure, while the mixture of fun ideas means the core concept of moving a blob of water around never gets old. The way each chapter is laid out into separate pages and panes not only allows for some diverse and great-looking visuals, but it also means casual players can easily dip in and out for short bursts while more determined players can spend longer amounts of time hunting down extra content.

06.MINISHOPAHOLIC By Sophie Kinsella NOVELIn the latest instalment to the wildly popular Shopaholic series (Shopaholic and Baby; etc.), Rebecca Brandon returns with wilful two-year-old Minnie, who has taken after her mother in her fierce determination and her addiction to luxury brands. When the financial crisis finally hits the Brandon family, Rebecca vows to stop shopping until she's worn everything in her closet at least three times; Luke scrambles for new business directions; and Minnie remains exceptionally difficult. Still, Rebecca wants to throw Luke a surprise birthday bash, but planning it behind his back and on a budget proves almost impossible. As in all previous Shopaholic books, Rebecca is loud and proud about her luxury-brand obsession and equally at ease being a flighty, sometimes annoying lead, though her well-meaning secret birthday mission scores her much-needed points in the sympathy department. Series fans know what to expect and will get it by the load.

05. BOUNCE: MOZART, FEDERER, PICASSO, BECKHAM, AND THE SCIENCE OF SUCCESSBy Mathew Syed SELF IMPROVEMENT Few things in life are more satisfying than beating a rival. We love to win and hate to lose, whether it's on the playing field or at the ballot box, in the office or in the classroom. In this bold new look at human behaviour, award-winning journalist and Olympian Matthew Syed explores the truth about our competitive nature why we win, why we don't, and how we really play the game of life. Bounce reveals how competition the most vivid, primal, and dramatic of human pursuits provides vital insight into many of the most controversial issues of our time, from biology and economics, to psychology and culture, to genetics and race, to sports and politics. Backed by cutting-edge scientific research and case studies, Syed shatters long-held myths about meritocracy, talent, performance, and the mind. He explains why some people thrive under pressure and others choke, and weighs the value of innate ability against that of practice, hard work, and will. From sex to math, from the motivation of children to the culture of big business, Bounce shows how competition provides a master key with which to unlock the mysteries of the world.

03.AND THERE BY HANGS A TALEBy Jeff Archer

SHORT STORIES Bestseller Archer assembles 15 more of the clever stories for which he is known. They are split between tales of trickery, as with "Stuck on You," where an eager young man is played by a diamond thief, and decidedly sentimental stories, such as "Members Only," about a man who wants nothing more than to join a private country club. Archer marks with an asterisk stories that are based on true incidents (10 in this collection), and whether it is the weight of credibility these stories' genesis lends or if the author works better with some starting material, the entirely imagined stories are also the weakest. "Politically Correct" never gets out of the shallows in its attempt to be provocative, and "Better the Devil You Know," with its evil executive making a deal with the devil (aka Mr. De Ath), is silly even for this author, who usually writes with a winningly light touch. Still, Archer's writing exudes a certain charm and is mostly satisfying. His trademark twists--sometimes a surprise to the reader, sometimes not--and genial tone will endear these mostly cozy stories to his many fans.

A reflection on a man with many smiles and funny thought provoking ideas guar-anteed to have you in stitches every time he steps on stage TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?Well the name is Thamer Faraj saeed Al-Hazmi, I am originally from Medina but I live in Jeddah. I’m the oldest of 5 brothers. HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT BECOMING A COMEDIAN?Well I think what triggered it the most is that I attended the very first stand-up com-edy show in Jeddah, and I wanted to be on stage instead of being among the crowd.GIVE US A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON HOW YOU STARTEDI met with the founder of Smile Produc-tions (Mr. Peter Howarth Lees) as I sent him an E-mail to audition. A week later, we met and I told him my style of come-dy and he wanted to see how I can deliver that on stage, so he gave me a spot on the LOL! Comedy Tour. I remember Peter’s reaction after my first stand up comedy performance, he was surprisingly stunned, and from there I built a good relationship with Smile Productions and became one of the local comedians to perform for their events alongside the local & international comedians. I’ve also received praise from international comedian (Sugar Sammy), as I opened for him in Jeddah, and he asked me how many times have I done this, and I told him this is only my 3rd performance. He was amazed how I handled and inter-acted with the crowd and plainly said “your style of comedy will take you far man, that was impressive and bold!!”.

Up to this moment, I’ve done 6 to 7 shows plus private events and it’s been amazing, I’ve opened for Ahmed Ahmed, Maz Jobrani and Sugar Sammy.TELL US ABOUT COMEDY IN SAUDI?It’s a very new, fresh and an accepted win-dow of entertainment. It is less than 3 years old, as in a stand-up comedy event with international comedians arriving to Saudi

Arabia and performing here and giving the opportunity to local comedians as an open-ing act, which is a great form of confidence and support.WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A COMEDIAN?I think it is sending a message through laughter and expressing your opinion with-out an aggressive tone, it’s how you view a very controversial or political subject, or even related topics that people will laugh at and welcome the concept of your opinion.

At the end stand-up comedy is a public freedom of speech outlet, the only differ-ence between the comedian and the politi-cian is the SMILE.WHERE DOES YOUR MATERIAL COME FROM? Anything I see that is a possible joke or even a potential laugh. My family is a big part in my material.

My source also comes from people’s reactions and emotions towards a subject, their opinion, their ideas is my source, so as a comedian I reshape their opinion to deliver it in a sarcastic and ironic manner, not necessarily make fun of, but puzzle their meaning.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?I see myself as a Muslim comedian yet a controversial comedian, I like to build my material around subjects that are impor-tant yet have divided opinions, which you can deliver both opinions to the crowd and let them decide which one sounds more re-alistic or acceptable or even stupid.WHAT PROBLEMS HAVE YOU FACED AS A COMEDIAN? AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM IT?Well at the moment I haven’t faced any-thing dramatic, I’m still in the learning process and just taking it all in. I try posi-tively to learn from mistakes and just win experience.YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS FROM BECOMING A COMEDIAN?I guess to be honest is the success of people laughing at my jokes and interacting with my material, for now my success is a num-

ber of people know who I am as a come-dian, or what kind of style I introduce when I’m on stage, I’m still building up my name and persona to the crowd, so I’m not in a hurry for any success.PEOPLES BIGGEST FEAR IS PUBLIC SPEAKING, DO YOU GET STAGE FRIGHT?I think it’s a normal feeling to witness that, but it’s not something that would stop me from going on stage and telling my jokes.TELL US YOUR GOALS AS A COMEDIAN?Make people laugh basically, but with a message to send that has impact on the au-dience, there has to be a meaning to your act or style of comedy you present. WHAT IS YOUR NEXT STEP? AND WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?First build my name and start to be recog-nised at least in the Middle East and work my way up to Europe and the U.S.One of the future plans, is I would love to start up a stand-up comedy club / open-mic lounge here in Jeddah.AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE YOU HADBeing a part of a sport commentary compe-tition on Show Time Network A.K.A Orbit Showtime Network. Not to brag but I took 1st place and went home. How do you spend your free time?Watching football, playing chess, I’m an Xbox geek and I like to read Islamic his-tory.A FINAL MESSAGE TO THE READERS? The Muslim Saudi society has a great deal of amazing young talent in every field not just in comedy. I think this generation al-ready understands the importance and capacity of technology and Media. I’m an optimistic Muslim, and I think my genera-tion will revolutionize the image of Saudi Arabia in the next 10-15 years.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE FEEDBACK?Sometimes feedback is a great step for you to reshape your material or at least look through another window that has other and surprising ideas.

PROGRAMMES LIKE LA YIKTHAR AND ALLA ALTAYIR ARE RECEIVING MANY VIEWERS WHAT IS YOUR POINT OF VIEW?Well I think it is a great start to show the Saudi public and media that we have cre-ative minds and impressive individuals that can make a massive buzz on the inter-net and set an impact, and these two gen-tlemen certainly did.WHEN DO YOU THINK THERE WILL BE A FEMALE COMEDIAN? As soon as a female says she would like to be a comedian and goes up on stage.WHAT SHOULD THE READERS LOOK FORWARD TO?I’m working with a film production compa-ny (Egg Dancers Productions) that is creat-ing a documentary about entertainment in Saudi Arabia (Let Me Entertain You).HOW WOULD SOMEONE KNOW THEY ARE CUT OUT TO BE A COMEDIANThe only way to know you are is to stand up and do what you think you’re good at; the first step to success is taking that first step. If you earn success then bow to Allah and keep going. If you fail, and no bones were broken, pride and ego is hurt, but you recover, stand up and live the reality again Muslim!

The Ancient Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs and cheese. The Romans developed placenta, topped with cheese, honey and flavored with bay leaves. Modern pizza originated in Italy as the Neapolitan pie with tomatoes. Il Porto got its inspiration from the wonderful set-ting of the red sea, with its ‘Il Porto’ pizza

IL PORTO

topped with fresh calamari, shrimp, octo-pus, salmon, zucchini, eggplant and mus-sels.

Once you enter the trattoria, the first thing that hits you is the authentic smell of Italy, not to mention that you are received in this cozy and warm pizzeria by a mod-est but elegant salad bar in the center. The Salad bar here is very much worth men-tioning as Il Porto has offered 6 different special salads that are main meals in their own right such as Salmon roll, arabisca, Pesto falfarli, chicken and potato, roca and lemon, not forgetting the sea food salad.

Il Porto takes the best of pizza tradi-tions from the authentic and contempo-rary Italy alike, to create this wonder in the heart of one of Jeddah’s finest locations. Classic flavors and ingredients are all used in the 12 varieties of pizzas on offer, fresh mozzarella cheese and grilled Halloumi, all coming together in inspired traditional ways. Alongside the menu, Il Porto has also promised a weekly specials board. The Pizzeria itself has an indoor as well as an all year round air conditioned outdoor area, however the olive oil in both sections differ, as the indoor olive oil is home made, and the outdoor is heat resistant.

No food experience is complete with-out a long list of deserts, Il Porto certainly does not fail as the list includes a tradition-al Tiramisu, caramel panacotta, chocolate fondant, chocolate mou, Italian cassata or you could just indulge with mini flirts that includes a selection of the deserts on offer.

DJ Bob Howayek has produced a spe-cial music list that guarantees never hear-ing the same track any time in the week. With such a warm atmosphere, you aren’t to blame if you thought that the dear Ital-ian old pizzeria lady is going to step out at any moment and ask you how you’re enjoy-ing your meal. There is no doubt that this will be a staple in Jeddah’s fine restaurant scene.
