Volunteer Profile

Name: Judy Stohr

How long have you volunteered at Pepper Street and what do you like about it? I have been volunteering at Pepper Street for over 4 years now and really look forward to my fortnightly Fridays. I enjoy catching up with all the class participants and I have become quite an expert coffee maker!

What is your favourite art style/form and why? Although I don’t paint or craft, I am always interested to see what other creative works are in the shop and gallery. I do enjoy all art styles and think it is great that we have so many talented local people.

Artist of the Month OctoberDianne K Wood Textiles1 - 30 October

Artist of the Month NovemberTerence White Small Watercolours5 - 23 November

“I am a late comer to Textile Art, having only commenced sewing in 2000 at the age of 53, but I have certainly made up time over the following years!

I started with quilting, appliqué and embroidery then quickly moved on to Textile Art. I like to make “pictures” with fabric, finding the process of choosing the right colour fabric for the right place very relaxing and enjoyable.

Unlike quilting (cotton only), I use every type of textile I can get my hands on. My love of experimentation has led me to use old photos, hand coloured on fabric, and painting and stitching the contrasts. I have a passion for buttons which I use to embellish and complete the work.

I love vintage also - the “look”, the fabric, the embellishments, and particularly 1920’s to 1950’s style. Old houses, fences, sheds, cars and jetties are also featured, as is my love of the look and texture of rust.

It is a pleasure to present my work to you.”

See and hear Dianne at work with her buttons and more, on Tuesday 5 October, 2 – 4.30pm. $5 per person. Bookings required.

“Born and educated in the UK I have lived in Adelaide since 1996.

My interest in art goes back to my early school days when I was delighted to have a painting hung at the Royal Academy, following a national children’s art competition.

After leaving school I initially worked for a small architectural firm as an “office boy”. After qualifying as an architect I worked in many parts of the world such as Canada, Nigeria, the Middle East and South-East Asia.

Before coming to live and work in Adelaide I attended art classes at a gallery in Ross-on-Wye Herefordshire UK. It was here that I started to develop an interest in watercolour painting.

I seek to achieve the qualities of freshness, transparency and ‘atmosphere’ in my work. My inspiration comes from the work of J. M. W. Turner, and an admiration for the work of Edward Wesson - an outstanding twentieth century watercolourist.

I hope you enjoy my paintings.”
