Whats On Winchester Weeks 14-15 Edition

Monday 6th June - Friday 17th June End of era...good luck, congratulations, have a great summer & goodbye! It’s finally here...the last two weeks of term, in fact the year! 2010/11 is at its end and so comes the time when everyone’s moving on in different ways for different reasons; it’s the time to look to the future that for all can be amazing, exciting and beneficial. In my 1 st year you could probably say I was like Harry Potter in the Philosophers’ stone; I didn’t want to leave for the summer break as I loved the year meeting new friends, gaining new experiences and having the chance of so many opportunities. I imagine for some 1 st years it will feel the same, and I hope you’re looking forward to being 2 nd years. 2nds years will be thankful to see another year end, safe in the knowledge you are now over half way through your degree. However, the work now needed over the summer to plan for FYPs will start to make you think about what your final year will bring. For 3 rd years, I guess the thought of ‘what to do now?’ is on your mind: good luck to those of you who are looking for jobs or thinking about more education, and congratulations to those who have found a job - I hope it brings you enjoyment and success. Those who are in 4 th or higher years of study again I hope that your endeavours are successful and worthwhile. It’s also my last few weeks here at the Student Union and University, so want to take this moment to say a huge thank you to all the staff at the SU for their hard work, commitment and determination to ensuring you as students have an amazing time. They have been fantastic to work with for the last two years and I will greatly miss working with them in the future. I also wish to say thank you to you - whether we’ve met or not; thank you for making the past two years incredible and something I will not forget! The future has uncertainty but I know the new executive will be fantastic in all endeavours and I wish them all the best of luck for next year! For one last time - have pride in who you are, have passion in what you do, and be determined in how you do it! WINCHESTER MAKE SOME NOISE!!! End of era...good luck, congratulations, have a great summer & goodbye!

It’s finally here...the last two weeks of term, in fact the year! 2010/11 is at its end and so comes the time when everyone’s moving on in different ways for different reasons; it’s the time to look to the future that for all can be amazing, exciting and beneficial.

In my 1st year you could probably say I was like Harry Potter in the Philosophers’ stone; I didn’t want to leave for the summer break as I loved the year meeting new friends, gaining new experiences and having the chance of so many opportunities. I imagine for some 1st years it will feel the same, and I hope you’re looking forward to being 2nd years.

2nds years will be thankful to see another year end, safe in the knowledge you are now over half way through your degree. However, the work now needed over the summer to plan for FYPs will start to make you think about what your final year will bring.

For 3rd years, I guess the thought of ‘what to do now?’ is on your mind: good luck to those of you who are looking for jobs or thinking about more education, and congratulations to those who have found a job - I hope it brings you enjoyment and success.

Those who are in 4th or higher years of study – again I hope that your endeavours are successful and worthwhile.

It’s the final countdown…. It would not be possible to write down everything I have done over the past twelve months, but since this is the last time I will ever write a WOW editorial, I’d like to share some of the lessons I learnt while in office. Lesson number one – You might not achieve everything, but achieving something is better than achieving nothing. The National Demo in London and the local protests we organised didn’t accomplish the result hoped for, but they did provide a platform for students to come together as a united body from Winchester, raising our profile (we made the BBC website!) and the concept of politics in the process. Good going guys! Lesson two – If you can’t get from A to B in a straight line, don’t stop, simply rethink your route. Some things have not been as smooth or easy as first imagined, but these scenarios have taught me a lot about thinking outside the box and perseverance. Those within the Radio Society know what I mean and despite several changes, have kept the project going. They’ll finally be on air before the end of term and I wish them every bit of luck with this next year. Lesson three– You are braver than you think. As humans we are taught to protect ourselves from prospective danger, but if we always allow fear to override desire then we’ll never discover our true potential. I’ve had amazing opportunities this year, some of which I found incredibly daunting, but if I hadn’t been plunged head first into the deep end at times, I’d still be paddling in shallow water - and that won’t help me swim the Channel now will it? I’d like to end by thanking those who have made my year truly memorable. Firstly, the Student Union staff who are often not given enough recognition for the hard work and extra hours they put in to keep the SU going. To you, the students, for your patience, understanding, support and involvement – it made the tough days bearable and the good days even better. Finally, to the officers I have worked alongside this year – they’ve been nothing but supportive, tolerant, compassionate and on the whole, good fun to be around and I’ve no doubt the new team will be just as incredible. In less than a month my four years in Winchester ends and though I’ll be sad to leave, I take with me fantastic memories, solid friendships and a bag full of lessons learnt which will prepare me for the big wide world - for which I am truly grateful. Good luck to each and every one of you in whatever you do next; absorb every moment, use your time wisely and be the best you can be. For the last time then Winchy’s - I bid you farewell...it’s been a pleasure :) Krissy Ball Vice President, Communication and Campaigns 2010-2011
