This Autumn Leeds Town Hall is a key destination for residents and visitors to the city, with its eclectic programme of outstanding orchestral concerts, fascinating films, stand-up comedy, talks and tours.

Leeds International Orchestral Season opens with an all-Russian programme from the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra (4 Oct) and from Russia we also welcome the St Petersburg Philharmonic (1 Nov). Leeds continues to host visits from some of the finest British orchestras including The Hallé with conductor Sir Mark Elder (11 Oct) and the English Chamber Orchestra presents a programme of Chopin with pianist Aristo Sham (29 Nov).

Musical highlights outside of the Orchestral Season include performances by maverick pianist, writer and TV presenter James Rhodes (16 Sep), trumpeter Alison Balsom in From Baroque to Broadway and Beyond (7 Oct) and Paco Peña returns with his flamenco company to perform his Requiem for Earth (10 Oct). From September to November, Carriageworks Theatre is being transformed into a cinema in the heart of the city.

Not For Rental is the exciting new cinema programme in Leeds city centre for viewers aged 15 and over. In collaboration with BFI Film Hub North and Carriageworks Theatre we’ll be bringing a series of exciting, challenging and rarely seen films to the big screen. James Rhodes LiveJames Rhodes has had an astonishing life. After a traumatic childhood, he found his salvation through classical music. With sheer determination he overcame his experiences and went on to become a writer, commentator, tv presenter and renowned concert pianist, performing sold-out concerts around the world.

Using his trademark ‘stand-up style’, insights and anecdotes on classical music, maverick pianist James Rhodes comes to Leeds with his highly unique show. This concert tour celebrates the release of his memoir, Instrumental, a tribute to the therapeutic powers of music, as well as a fascinating insight into the lives of some of the great composers.

Last year James performed at Latitude Festival, toured to Hong Kong and Vienna and presented and performed in the acclaimed television documentary Notes from the Inside which aired on Channel 4. James is currently releasing his 5th studio album called 5 and filming his new series for Channel 4 which is due to air this September.

When Igudesman & Joo perform with a symphony orchestra, the musical nightmares take on epic proportions!

This year Light Night is celebrating its 10th festival! For one night only the city centre will come alive with spectacular large scale light projections, installations, exhibitions, film, dance, theatre and street entertainment. Many of the city’s arts organisations and public buildings will be opening their doors late into the night as artists transform spaces into temporary showcases of their work.

The Town Hall will be hosting a range of events including the launch of the 2014 Leeds International Film Festival programme in Victoria Hall, and art work in the many different spaces such as the Courtroom and Prison Cells. The popular tours of the Clock Tower will offer incredible views of the city at night.

So, bring your friends and family along to experience a fantastic festival atmosphere, navigate your way around the 50 different events across the city centre, and sample some delicious street food.

This Autumn the Town Hall organ series features an eclectic mix of solo recitals and concerts featuring special guests. This season there is also one concert of entirely unaccompanied choral music, drawn from the rich repertoire of the Renaissance to mark the feasts of All Saints and All Souls (27 Oct).

Solo recitals come from City Organist Simon Lindley (22 Sept), Alan Horsey (24 Nov) and John Scott Whiteley (1 Dec). In November, in association with the Leeds International Film Festival, Simon Lindley presents a programme of film and organ music

together in The War to end all wars... a hundred years on (10 Nov).

Special guests include St Peter’s Singers (27 Oct), the choirs of Leeds Cathedral and Leeds Minster(8 Dec) and the University of Huddersfield Brass Band performing seasonal music (Tue 16 Dec).Plus, Alice and Martin Neary perform a programme of Bach pieces for cello and organ (17 Nov).

Considered one of the world’s greatest Flamenco artists, Paco Pena brings his astonishing flamenco company to Leeds Town Hall for this internationally-acclaimed production featuring the Ecclesia Choirand Bradford Catholic Girls’ Choir.

Peña is one of the leading champions of the Flamenco tradition and his shows always combine brilliantly music, drama and dance to push at the boundaries of this ancient musical form.

The New York Times wrote ‘Peña is a virtuoso, capable of dazzling an audience beyond the frets of mortal man. He combines rapid-fire flourishes with a colourist’s sense of shading; this listener cannot recall hearing any guitarist with a more assured mastery of his instrument.’

This Requiem featuring guitarists, percussionists, a flamenco dancer and choir is an epic lament for our planet which fuses the heat and fire of flamenco with the passionate incantations of a Southern Spanish requiem mass.

Requiem for the Earth is a powerful reminder that our existence on earth is transitory. Experiencing this performance, with its driving flamenco rhythms, dark harmonies and soulful vocals combining beautifully with the expressive choral music will be a thrilling and moving evening and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Multi-award-winning trumpet player Alison Balsom will be performing her first headline tour throughout the UK this October.

Alison will be joined by renowned organist Chad Kelly performing an eclectic mix of repertoire from Bach to Gershwin and Ravel to Satie. Be taken on a musical journey with Alison exploring virtuosity, style, elegance and melody.

The tour will include repertoire from Alison Balsom’s much anticipated new album, which is set to include the beautiful songs Autumn Leaves, April in Paris and La Vie en Rose.

As one of the most highly regarded trumpeters and exciting classical musicians of a generation, Balsom has spent the last decade performing in the world’s most prestigious venues.

Winner of the Nordoff Robbins PPL Classical Award 2013, three Classical BRITs including Female Artist of the Year in 2009 and 2011, Alison was also the first ever classical female artist to headline Latitude Festival last summer.

Romeo and Juliet was just one of Shakespeare’s plays that inspired Tchaikovsky. The opening of the overture paints a picture of doom, followed by a more dynamic theme portraying the ongoing feud between the Montagues and Capulets. Listen out for the crashing cymbals, symbolising the sword fight between the two families. We then change pace for the famous love theme as Romeo (horn) and Juliet (flutes) meet for the first time. The final cymbal crash signifies the suicide of the lovers, followed by a final funereal theme.

Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony begins with a funeral-style theme, which, by the fourth movement, has transformed into a more optimistic march. The most famous performance of this work was in 1941, when, during the Siege of Leningrad, the orchestra continued to play as bombs were heard dropping in the distance. It became a popular piece from then on, used by the choreographer Massine for a ballet, and Glenn Miller set lyrics to the second movement for his song, Moon Love.

The Requiem was Mozart’s very last work, left unfinished at the time of his death aged just 35. All sorts of myths have sprung up over the years surrounding the commissioning and composition of the work, but however intriguing the mysteries, the actuality of this most human of Requiems in all its beauty and terror remains a wonder to behold when encountered live.

The joint forces of the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North are conducted by maestro Jac van Steen in a programme that also features Sibelius’s Fourth Symphony and the Prelude to Wagner’s opera Lohengrin.

The overture to The Flying Dutchman was the last part of the opera that Wagner wrote. The opera tells the story of a man who is doomed to sail the oceans forever due to his sacrilegious ways unless he is saved through the love of a faithful woman. This idea of salvation through love is common to Wagner’s compositions. It is thought that he wrote the piece following a stormy three-week journey by boat from Riga to London as he and his wife attempted to flee from their debt. He wrote this work in an attempt to recover financially.

The first of Shostakovich’s two violin concertos was written in 1947/8 but not performed until 1955, following the death of Stalin. During his regime censorship suppressed Shostakovich’s musical output as all new works had to be approved in advance by the authorities before they could be publicly performed. Whilst Shostakovich did compose certain works that he knew would be approved, he was aware that the first violin concerto was not such a piece, hence the delay in publishing.

Mysteries of the Macabre is a set of arias for soprano and orchestra taken from Ligeti’s only opera, Le Grand Macabre. The story is of the world ending, as seen through the eyes of life’s misfits. This dark, witty and raucous work was inspired by paintings by Breughel and Bosch.

Much debate surrounds the origins of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. Only 199 bars of the first movement were ever proven to have been written by him, and many believe that some sections were written by other composers. The work was written shortly before Mozart died and it was not performed until after his death. He wrote for his friend Anton Stadler who was particularly proficient in the lower registers of the instrument. Mozart made the most of Stadler’s skills by writing various low passages which demanded a special extended version of the instrument capable of producing the lower notes, invented by Stadler. Widely considered to be the finest piece written for clarinet, this concerto featured in the 2010 Colin Firth film,The King’s Speech.

Following the sell-out success of his long-awaited return to stand up, Alan Davies returns with his highly anticipated follow up show, Little Victories.

Our concert opens with Liadov’s re-telling of the legend of Russia’s tiny yet very sinister house spirit, Kikimora who lives with a magician in the mountains. “...her head is no larger than a thimble and her body no wider than a strand of straw. Kikimora spins flax from dusk and to dawn, with evil intentions for the world.”

Grieg wrote his only piano concerto whilst on holiday with his wife in Denmark, wanting a new work to show off his own talents at the keyboard. He had recently heard Clara Schumann performing her husband’s only piano concerto and was heavily influenced by this work, writing in the same key and opening with a striking descending passage. In 1909 this became the first piano concerto to ever be recorded.

During Stalin’s regime, Shostakovich was twice castigated for composing works which did not appease the dictator, in 1936 and 1948. The tenth symphony was the first symphonic work he wrote after 1948 and was first performed just after Stalin’s death in 1953. Shostakovich said: “I wrote it right after Stalin’s death and no one has yet guessed what the symphony is about. It’s about Stalin and the Stalin years.”

Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture was written as he toured Scotland and the Hebrides writing his third symphony. Here Mendelssohn paints a picture, firstly of the isolation one feels in the great cave and then of the crashing waves which surround it.

Continuing his tour of Europe, Mendelssohn explored Italy where he was driven to write his Italian symphony from 1929 – 31. In a letter to his sister he wrote: “The Italian symphony is making great progress. It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done, especially the last movement. I have not found anything for the slow movement yet, and I think that I will save that for Naples.”

Indeed, the second movement, opening with a chorale-like tune on the violin, was inspired by Naples, where he saw a church procession.

Poulenc was not particularly religious, until, following the death of his friend, he went on a pilgrimage and started to write sacred works. These included his understated Salve Regina and his Four Christmas Motets.

Canteloube grew up in Auvergne and the influence of the countryside can be heard in his folk-inspired Songs of Auvergne, written in the local language of Occitan. The most well-known song is Baeïlèro which was said to have been inspired by a call that he heard between two shepherds. Listen out for the oboe imitating the shepherd’s pipe in this movement.

Our concert of French music is completed by Faure’s setting of the Roman Catholic mass for the dead. Leaving out the Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) movement, Faure said “It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance... rather than as a painful experience...”

La Mer (The Sea) was written partly in France and partly on the coast in Eastbourne. During composition Debussy was having an affair and had run away to England with his mistress. The three movements are entitled From dawn to midday on the sea, Play of the waves and Dialogue of the wind and the sea. Debussy wrote “I was destined for the fine career of a sailor... only the accidents of life put me on another path.” It is thought that this magically descriptive work went on to inspire John Williams in writing his soundtrack for Jaws.

Whilst many felt that Ravel’s ‘tribute to the waltz’ documented the demise of Vienna and its dance form following the first world war, Ravel said “While some discover an attempt at parody... others categorically see a tragic allusion in it... But one should only see in it what the music expresses: an ascending progression of sonority, to which the stage comes along to add light and movement.” Originally entitled Vienna to be a tribute to the works of Strauss, Ravel turned the piece into a ballet for Diaghilev, who never produced the piece – a decision which ended their friendship.

Celebrate Christmas at Leeds Town Hall’s annual family carol concerts. After the concert there will be a collection for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal.

The Lord Mayor’s chosen charity for 2014/15 is the Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal. Leeds Children’s Hospital is the second largest service for Children in the country and was created in 2010 by bringing all children’s inpatient services together in one location at the Leeds General Infirmary, solving the issue of seriously ill youngsters having to be transferred across the city. The children’s services admit over 30,000 children to the wards each year. Over 109,000 children are treated in the outpatient departments and nearly 60,000 children are seen each year through the Accident and Emergency Department.
