Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test-charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated - and more deceptive - than the two men could have imagined.

Hilary, a young psychology researcher at a brainscience institute, is nursing a private sorrow and a troubling question at work, where psychology and biology meet. If there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? This is ‘the hard problem’ which puts Hilary at odds with her colleagues who include her first mentor Spike, her boss Leo and the billionaire founder of the institute, Jerry. Is the day coming when the computer and the fMRI scanner will answer all the questions psychology can ask? Meanwhile Hilary needs a miracle, and she is prepared to pray for one. Acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love, Arcadia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead) returns to the National Theatre with his highly-anticipated new play The Hard Problem, directed by Nicholas Hytner (Othello, Hamlet, One Man, Two Guvnors).

IVan thE tERRIBLELIVE 19th April, 5pm

As young Ivan IV is crowned, he has to choose one of the 13 Boyar daughters to be his wife and tsarina. He selects Anastasia, and the two eventually fall deeply in love. When the Boyars plot against him and poison his beloved wife, Tsar Ivan finds himself surrounded by enemies. Haunted by dark thoughts and phantoms, he slowly sinks into madness. Drawing on the music composed by Prokofiev for the 1944 Eisenstein film, Ivan the Terrible is a work in the true Bolshoi style. Yuri Grigorovich’s powerful and fascinating epic dramatises Ivan the Terrible’s controversial reign, and portrays events in 16th-century Russia in visually stunning scenes. His choreography, full of vigour, strength and wild jumps, also includes great grace and fragility in the female roles. Sensitive classical and powerful character dance blend to create a lyrical epic, rich in the colours of medieval Russia.

Opera’s most enduring tragic double bill returns in an evocative new production from Sir David McVicar (Giulio Cesare, Maria Stuarda, Il Trovatore), who sets the verismo action across two time periods but in the same Sicilian setting. Marcelo Álvarez rises to the challenge of playing the dual tenor roles of Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci. Rae Smith (War Horse) has designed the moodily atmospheric 1900 village square setting of Cavalleria Rusticana, which transforms to a 1948 truck stop for the doomed vaudeville troupe of Pagliacci. Eva- Maria Westbroek (Cav) and Patricia Racette (Pag) play the unlucky heroines. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium.

Some of them, however, explode. This is a movie about those people. Vulnerable in the face of a reality that shifts and suddenly turns unpredictable, the characters of Wild Tales cross the thin line that divides civilization and barbarism. A lover's betrayal, a return to the repressed past and the violence woven into everyday encounters drive the characters to madness as they cede to the undeniable pleasure of losing control.

BAFTA winner and Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road). Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out. One of the great primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate, and movement by Javier De Frutos.

I knoW I don’t - gIoLa CassaR10th April - 3rd mAy - upper GAlleries“I know I don’t” is an exhibition that explores personal identity and the idiosyncratic things that make a person unique and identifiable to other. The work aims to explore the identity and the meaning of identity, in the space and time we live in. Acknowledging that various aspects that make up identity exist, while exploring it in the context of the relation to self and to others. Intrigued by this ongoing struggle of adjusting and finding different places and roles in the world, Giola Cassar makes use of her personal experiences and tries to translate them to universal ones.

BEYond LoVE8th mAy - 31st mAy - upper GAlleriesA contemporary photography collection featuring the work of twenty established and up and coming photographers from Malta and overseas, Beyond Love seeks to expose the emotional duality of human relationships and their aftermath. The exhibition is subdivided into two themes. The first, Devotion will capture intimacy in its various forms including those challenging stereotypes and the perceived status quo. Cruel World on the other hand , as the heading suggests, presents the backwash of the former: desolation, remnants of love and self reflection. The exhibition is supported by the Malta Arts Fund.

This language will be shown, through digital means, within places of constraint, such as hospitals and within places of exchange such as museums. The project aims to integrate artistic research with research carried out in the context it is being shown in. The artwork will be shown to two types of audiences – the target audience, who will consist of nurses and therapists (the care providers), patients or clients (the users) within a hospital or clinical setting and the second audience, who will be the people visiting St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity (the viewers). This will serve to expose art to new audiences so as to expand and increase society’s engagement with art content. The exhibition is supported by the Malta Arts Fund.

FRagMEnts22nd mAy - 15th June - terrAce hAllThis exhibition will be set up by three Art undergraduate students (Brendan Buttiġieġ, Julia Grech and Matthew Schembri) in their final year at the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta. The chosen theme – Fragments – reflects the differences between the artists themselves and their artistic work. If we observe ourselves and our surroundings, we soon realise that everything could be interpreted as made of many fragments which are combined together. Our emotional frameworks, personal and physical identities, our urban and natural surroundings, our social behaviour and relationship with contemporary technologies and networks: all of these fragments make up our complex lives in the twenty-first century. Individuals distinguish between one fragment and another and give priority to some of them. This theme has been dealt with throughout the history of art, literature and philosophy, and the three young artists have carried out research about these diverse fields that led each one of them to produce their own personal work, making use of a variety of media and technical processes.
