Sunday 20thNovember10:00 am Skippool Creek,Thornton, Nr Cleveleys

Tucked away in a bend in theWyre estuary stands SkippoolCreek.

A scene that has little changedsince the 1900′s.

Skippool Creek was first settledby the Saxons ,its name derivingfrom the Saxon word skiffs.

The area came to prominence inthe 1700′s when it was the main

port on the River Wyre before thedevelopment of Fleetwood.Ships of up to200 tonnes would unload cargoes fromaround the world with flax and cotton forthe Lancashire mills.

It was also renowned as a centre forcockfighting as well as being a haunt for

smugglers and press gangs looking forrecruits for the Royal navy.

The opening of the railway to Fleetwood in1840 quickly brought about the demise ofthe creek.

The gathering of gulls on the sandbankshere sometimes contain rarer species;Mediterranean Gull is regular

The saltmarshes attract flocks of finchesand skylarks with smaller numbers of

pipits and wagtails. These are best seenon high tides from the footpath leadingsouth from Hambleton. Choose a veryhigh tide, arrive early and watch for thebirds as they are moved by the incomingtide. Water Pipits are sometimes seenamongst the Rock Pipits, and Jack Snipeoften accompany the Snipe.

The whole area attracts raptors with Per-egrine, Merlin and Sparrowhawk are seenirregularly during most winters.

We hope that by producing What's On we introduce younot only to the activities provided by the club but also toother opportunities to get out and about to takephotographs or to see exhibitions or listen to interestingspeakers.

However we can only do this if we know what is goingon outside the club.

The website now includes two additional features thefirst is a calendar which incorporates not only thesyllabus but other events and the second is a guide tolocal events provided by an outside source, and ournew Weather Forecast Gizmo.

We need input from you to keepWhat's On and the calendar up-to-date.

If you learn of anything which might be of interest toother members whether it be somewhere to go orsomething to see please let us know.

For general events and photo opportunities pleaseemail the details to our events coordinator StewardElliott. [email protected]

For other stuff please e-mail it to [email protected]

Finally you will see that Andy Philips has provided thisweek’s cover.

He has supplied me with some more images and thereare always my threatened holiday snaps to fill in.

However I am sure that there is someone else out therewho would like to have their image on the cover and ifyou would send me an image you have every chanceof it being used next week.

The image should be about 1500 pixels wide. What'sOn is landscape format and therefore landscapeimages are preferred you will also note that type isplaced to the bottom right-hand corner so please takethat into account when choosing the photograph.
