Europe, and we have been welcoming visitors and worshippers for
almost one thousand years.
Today, over 300,000 visitors come to Winchester Cathedral each
year to share in our worship, explore our heritage and enjoy our
varied programme of services and events.

GUIDED TOURSA walk around the Cathedral takes you through 1,000 years of history
and one of the best ways to explore is with a Cathedral Guide.
R E G U L AR TO U R SCathedral Tours: A great introduction to the Cathedral, its history
and treasures. Available on the hour from 10.00am – 3.00pm Monday
– Saturday. Admission fees apply.
Audio Tour: Voiced by actor David Suchet, this flexible tour allows
you to explore the Cathedral in your own time. It includes music by
the Cathedral Choir. A £3 surcharge applies.
Free Children’s Trail: This illustrated trail provides a fun and active
way to explore the Cathedral. Discover its rich and fascinating
history and find out about some of the characters and major historic
events that have helped to shape our nation.
Crypt Tour: Explore one of the oldest parts of the Cathedral.
The crypt provides a stunning setting for Antony Gormley’s
sculpture Sound ll. Tours run at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm
Monday – Saturday (not available when the crypt is flooded).
Admission fees apply.
Rooftop Tour: Climb up to the roof and see fantastic views
of Winchester. See the ringing chamber and the great Cathedral
bells and walk the full length of the nave roof. See the website for
tour times and availability. Tickets £6.50, available from the Entrance
Desk in the Cathedral.
You are warmly invited to join us for worship at Winchester
Cathedral. There is no charge to attend services or for those wishing

in 2010, in recognition of his decades of archaeological work in
Winchester. He will talk to the Friends about the subject of his new

one collection of original material from the earlier stages of the
great survey has survived: Exon Domesday. A six year project
has researched the composition of the book and provided a
reconstruction of its creation and history. This talk will be
presented by a member of the Exeter Cathedral project team.

towards a close, Winchester Cathedral welcomes a performance
of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, which interweaves the war
poetry of Wilfred Owen with the traditional Latin words of the
Requiem Mass. Written for the consecration of the new Coventry
Cathedral in 1962, this deeply moving work calls for an adult mixed
choir, boys’ choir, full orchestra, chamber orchestra, three soloists
and organ. Performed by the English Arts Orchestra, with the
English Arts Chorale and Burford Singers, and the boys’ choir of
Bristol Cathedral. Conducted by Leslie Olive and Brian Kay.

stonemasons and learn more about the art of stonemasonry.
Masons will gather within the Inner Close of the Cathedral and carve
sculptures of their own design, based around the theme “Kings and
Scribes”. All carvings will be auctioned on the Sunday afternoon,
with the proceeds going towards the ongoing restoration works at
the Cathedral.
Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the masons and discuss
their individual works, have a go at carving, learn more about this
ancient art and see what impact this vital work has on the life of the
Cathedral today.
Refreshments will be available within the Cathedral Refectory
throughout the day.
Free admission. All welcome.

SAT U R DAY 1 6 J U N E , 1 0 .0 0A MM AG N I F I C E N C E R E VE ALE D : TO U R AN D TE A The dedicated restorers have completed their work and the
presbytery is now returned to the glory of former years. The tour
concentrates on this area, providing the historical background and
details of the conservation where possible, looking at the mortuary
chests, the presbytery wooden vault and bosses, the Great Screen
and the East Window. Most of the original work was from the time
of Bishop Fox (1501–1528), including his chantry chapel which was
completed 500 years ago this year.

second of three recitals given by students. Although lunchtime
recitals are free to attend a retiring collection will be taken.
