THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Learning Intention• To understand what the universe is made of• To research planets, stars planetoids and other outer space
phenomenon• To produce and share a fact sheet about my given space
phenomenon
Success Criteria• I have researched all the required facts about my topic• I have shared my 5 facts with the class• I understand that the universe is vast and filled with many
interesting phenomenon

What is it made up of?

Stars
• What is a Star?– A star is a massive, luminous ball of reacting
gas– All stars have a life cycle which takes billions
of years– Our Sun is a star, but just one of many
millions in our galaxy
• The closet star to our solar system, apart from the Sun, is called Alpha Centauri

Stars Life Cycle
• Stars look different at different stages of their life cycle
• Some names for the stages of stars are,– White dwarf– Red Giant– Supernova– Black Hole
• Scientist know they are different by using a special diagram which relates temperature to the type of star

Galaxies
• Our solar system is contained within a galaxy called the Milky way
• Each galaxy is made up of several star systems
• The universe itself is made up of many billions of galaxies
• Scientists are able to photograph them from Earth and in space using the Hubble Space Telescope

Planets
• Our solar system contains eight planets, with each one orbiting the Sun
• Many of the planets have moons which orbit around them
• Planets were named after Romans and Greek gods
• Other galaxies have planets, but they are very hard to find
![Page 16: What's in the Solar System](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022052901/5569bdb1d8b42aee2a8b528e/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
• The planets have an order worked out from the closeness of their orbit to the Sun
• Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
• BUT WHAT ABOUT PLUTO?
• Eris was a planet discovered in 2003 in the solar system that is larger than Pluto

Moons
• Moons are satellites that orbit planets
• The Earths Moon is simply known as the moon – but other planets have moons with proper names
• Jupiter has lots of Moons – we know lots of details about the inner four – Callisto, Io, Ganymede and Europa at this stage.

Asteroid Belt
• Between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter there is an asteroid belt• the asteroids that make it up are large irregularly shaped pieces of rock

Comets
• A comet is a small object in the Solar System that orbits the Sun• Occasionally they are visible from Earth as they pass by
