What’s the Deal with Gum? By: Cydnee Mebane
How many times a day have you or someone else asked a friend “Do you have any chewing gum?” Well, if I could count all the times I heard that question, the number would be almost 100! It’s obvious, gum has become a necessity in middle school life, and although most teachers don’t approve of it in class, students still find a way to chew this sticky candy. But why do we chew it so much? Of course it’s because of its flavor, but what about beyond that? After asking a couple of students in 8th grade why they chew gum, I got a variety of answers. Emily Conley and Eli Munoz like gum “because it helps them with boredom and because they like it.” De’Ante Beckem likes chewing gum because it “freshens his breath.” Alex Duggan chews gum because “it helps him concentrate in class.” Conner Sulivan and A.J. Brooks like it because “it calms them down and just because it’s good!” So there’s a different reason for different people as to why they like chewing gum in school. Me myself, I like chewing gum so I know I have fruity breath! But, you know, to each his own. Do you like chewing gum?

Kinectimals By: Nicholas Neal
Have you ever wanted a wild cat as a pet but your parents just won’t let you have it? Well, now you can with kinect (sort of like a Wii for the Xbox). The new game, Kinectimals, lets you adopt that pet and take care of it like a normal pet. You can feed it, give it water, and play with it just like a normal pet. You can also explore an island with it playing mini games along the way. What’s the catch you might ask? You must have the kinect attachment for the Xbox 360. This game is out in stores now.
Game of the week is looking for new games. If you want
to get your game on game of the week submit it to Mrs.
Morrison. Information from http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/kinectimals-review/.

experienced the great presence
of Mr. C. J. Beatty, the
Cardinals outfield go-to guy.
He spoke with them about his
life and his experiences. He
was a 26th round draft pick for
the St. Louis Cardinals. “He’s a
five foot nine athletic beast,”
said an A.C.E. Academy
member. They thanked him
and he was off. Did I mention
that he was funny? He inspired
so many of them and he gave

Career Start:
Why It “Pays” To Be a Nerd By: Cydnee Mebane
It used to be uncool to be called a “poindexter” in
school, but now the tables have turned. With a steady
and rapid rise in technological advances in the world,
it seems that the most influential people will be
nerds. Most people in the tech world have said that
when they were in school, they had an interest in
math, science, or computers. One of the most known
success stories is about Bill Gates, who started off
having a fascination with computers and software
which led him to help create the Microsoft Empire
and become one of the richest people in existence!
For example, all the popular high tech games (like
Call of Duty: Black Ops) have incredibly realistic
graphics, and quite a complicated program. But how
do you think they got that way? They were created
by people who know their way around a computer!
So, the next time you see the kids who would rather
read than go to the mall, instead of
nerd, it may be better to call them
future boss!

The Night Before Christmas: Weird
Edition
By: Arissa Vaden
‘ T was the night before Christmas, when all through the
house,
Not a creature was flying, not even a chicken;
The holey socks were hung by the chimney with hair,
In hopes that Santa Claus would be there with a bear;
The elderly were sleeping with bugs in their beds,
While visions of tuna fish danced in their heads;
And momma in her avocado mask, and I in my Snuggie,
Had just sat down for an episode of Spongebob,
When out on the lawn I began to hear laughter,
Because I jumped off the couch and fell off a ladder.
Away to my bedroom, I flew like a fly,
Shoved open the closet and fell again with a crash.
The moon was showing his bright yellow teeth
Made my eyes hurt, so I covered them with ground beef,
When I heard cowbells ringing and dinging,
I threw away the old meat,
And when I looked up, there was a fat man in red,
With nine giant reindeer standing on his head,
And he shouted, and yelled, and sang out their names;
“ Now, Dasher! now, Prancer! now, Dancer and you to Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donner and dang it, you to Blitzen!
Oh, and you too Rudy…
Stand on the porch, stick to the wall!
Now go away! GO AWAY! GO AWAY YOU ALL!”
Wet, snowed-on leaves fly as Santa flies,
Up to the sky where he hovers,
Then Santa lands on my house and spits.
With a sleigh full of Hot Wheels and Barbies,
And Santa with his leftover dinner from Hardees.
