TODAY’S PROGRAM...

HUMAN TRAFFICKING Deb Jones introduced today’s speaker, David Man-ville, President of Sparrow Freedom Project, a faith based non-profit he co-founded with Anita Hoepner to raise awareness on the issue of human trafficking. Mr. Manville, retired lecturer in social work at EMU, and Ms. Hoepner, a mother of two and abuse survivor her-self, met and started the Project last year after a report surfaced of a women and her daughter being followed in a nearby mall by a man they thought was trying to kidnap them. While the report turned out to be false, the practice of human trafficking is very real. Under-standing that education is the first step in prevention, the Project works to teach children, parents and also grandparents the signs of such abuse and how to re-port it.

Mr. Manville began his talk with the sobering news that, although most of us view this as more of a third-world problem, human trafficking is actually happening all around us. Considered to be the second largest criminal enterprise after drugs, human trafficking can encompass many forms of forced servitude but is

mostly found here in the form of sexual exploitation. Sadly, many of the victims are young women with very few resources. And not surprising, a majority of these victims made first contact with their abusers through some form of social media. This is why it’s so important, for young people especially, to know the signs.

In addition to teaching awareness, the Project also works to assist victims themselves since many leave their abusers with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Working together with local churches and survivor groups, victims are assisted with temporary housing, clothing and toiletries, etc. Mr. Manville and Ms. Hoepner’s efforts also reach across the globe as they assist women in Africa with a Bras for Cause program, enabling them to support them-selves and their children on their own.

We can help this dedicated “Unusual Couple” (as dubbed by WDIV) in many ways; the Pro-ject is holding a three day conference and retreat in Sept with sponsorship opportunities available (this is a public event so you may also choose to attend); they’re hosting an Art Month at the Saline Public Library in Jan 2019, accepting donations of art for sale; they’ll take donations of bras, toiletries and accept any monetary donations; and they can also use tattoo artists services as many victims are branded in some way and a beautiful tattoo can cover such an ugly stain. GUESTS AT OUR CLUB… Today we welcomed the family of Sheridan Springer—wife Sallie Springer and daughters Sherri Springer, Shelly Springer Kessler, and Shannon Springer Steinbach. We also welcomed Esther Hampton, wife of William Hampton. Welcome guests!

HOSPITALITY… Cliff Sheldon had a set-back when a scheduled lung procedure at the U-M Hospital turned into a much more serious operation. He’s receiving great care and is thankful for the calls and messages of concern. Clarence Dukes is at home recovering from a minor surgical procedure and hopes to see us all next week. Mary Stewart contin-ues to battle shingles but hopes to be back with us soon.

Doug Olsen, past president of a Kiwanis club elsewhere and son of our past president Don Olsen, is currently under hospice care.

ANNOUNCEMENTS… On Monday, July 2, our club will be visited by Lindsay Heering, Manag-er, Child and Family Life at C.S.Mott Children’s Hospital with a few other staff members. Lindsay has been in the position for less than a year and the purpose of the visit is to be-come more acquainted with our Club and us with her. All members should understand the importance of our relationship with the Child and Family Life Department. See below:

CHILD AND FAMILY LIFE DEPARTMENT / C.S. MOTT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL KIWANIS OF MICHIGAN FOUNDATION

On Monday July 2, 2018 our Club will be visited by Lindsay Heering, Manager Child and Family Life at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and two or three other staff member of the Department. Lindsay has been in the position less than a year and the purpose of the visit is to become acquainted with our Club and us with her. At a date yet to be determined Lindsay will return to the Club and make a presentation on the Child and Family Life Department.

For new members and as a review for longer members it is important to understand the importance of our rela-tionship with the Child and Family Life Department. In 1922 at the request of the Pediatric Department of the University of Michigan Hospital the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor assisted in the funding of a teaching position at the Hospital and also assisting in providing recreational and educational materials. With this action the University of Michigan Hospital established the first Child and Family Life Department in the United States. It is now an accred-ited discipline in all major children’s hospitals in the United States as well as many local hospitals. The Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor has been supporting this project for 96 years and it has had the most impact for children of any project in the history of the Club.

Since 1953 the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation has been involved in assisting in the mission to serve hospital-ized children. Over the years other Child and Family Life Departments at other hospitals have been added to the mission; first, the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, next the McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey and lastly the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.

The Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor makes annual contributions to the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation along with other clubs in the District to support all the involved Child and Family Life Departments. The monthly “Mott Pot” contribution are sent to the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation for record keeping purposes but are forwarded to the Child and Family Life Department at the C.S. Mott Children’ Hospital.

As the current District membership is less than 50% of the membership in the late 90s funding the Child and Family Life Departments has become an increasing challenge. For example, Mott used to receive about $190,000 a year from the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation and now it receives about $90,000. For the past few years the net proceeds of our golf outing have gone to the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation. The Foundation has also initiated other fund raising programs and is constantly exploring other ideas.

Next Monday please provide a warm welcome to Lindsay and the other staff members.

Larry French A Past Trustee and President of the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation

FINES...

A few fines were proposed today; first, it was proposed and passed that new members and sponsors pay their customary first fine. Next, in honor of a pact made by the 11 year old versions of Sherry and Sallie Springer that all of their future children’s names would begin with an S, Fred Sanchez proposed a fine on anyone whose last name begins with an S. This one passed unanimously and its proposal had nothing to do with the fact that Fred would be exempt.

HAPPY DOLLARS...

Plenty of happy people today but no time for Happy Dollars. We still received an anonymous $5, thanks!

SHERIDAN SPRINGER PRESENTATIONS…

President William Hampton welcomed the family of Sheri-dan Springer up to the podi-um today, where they were presented with a beautiful plaque commemorating Sher-idan’s many years of service to the club. The son of past presi-dent Walter Springer, Sheri-dan joined our Club in 1960. To this day, he holds the rec-ord for the longest, continuous perfect attendance—58 years!

After giving a touching history of Sheridan and his family’s commitment to Kiwanis and helping their community, Andrea Kotch Duda an-nounced a monetary gift from Sheridan’s estate that will be used for supporting the Kiwanis building and other thrift sale needs. He and wife Sallie wish the funds to be used in ways that makes it easier for us to run the store and for shoppers to better enjoy their shopping experi-ence. This generous gift will help us continue our mission of Serving the Children of the World for many years to come. Sheridan truly exempli-fied what it means to be a Kiwanian and he will be missed.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTIONS...

Lynne Lande led the induction of three new members today; Leo Tse, Carol Presley and Jim Fries.

Leo Tse, sponsored by Nicolette Williams (KYP). Nicolette tells us that Leo came to us from Circle K and that he’s been a wonderful addition, hardworking and always willing to serve wherever he’s needed.

Carol Presley, sponsored by Joe Medrano. Carol, past direc-tor of the Pittsfield Senior Center, came to Kiwanis as a volun-teer a few years ago when she worked a Christmas sale at the prior KCD. She’s assisted the sale in many ways since that first sale and is a past Honorary Member.

Jim Fries, sponsored by Dan Dever. Jim, who’s been very ac-tive in non-profit and public work, has been volunteering for some time in at the sale already.

We welcome our new members and are very happy they’re a part of our Kiwanis family!

MEMORY GEM SPARK...

Fellow Kiwanians—Another idea to commemorate our 100th year. An extension of our current program. Dale

TULSA CENTENNIAL OBSERVANCE plants a seed. When the Kiwanis Club of Tulsa, Oklahoma, began plan-ning its centennial celebration, members considered build-ing a monument. Instead, they chose to invest in the fu-ture. With the $84,000 earmarked for a monument, the group instead funded student scholarships and teacher grants in the cash-strapped Tulsa school system.

The club presented its awards at a sit-down dinner, followed by an after-party of fellow-ship and dancing. The group already has a rich history of awarding scholarships, but it opened its Student of the Year award to anyone who wanted to submit an application and essay. The winner received $5,000 for books, a laptop or other school expenses. High school principals nominated candidates for Teacher of the Year, which carried a $2,500 grant. The club also donated matching grants to each high school.
