What’s New Why Is It Important to Me? The new academic year is about to start, and IRM has been working very hard to ensure that this year your campus technology experience will be better than ever before. In our “new look” newsletter we give you “the long and the short” of what has been happening at IRM, how these changes affect you, and how IRM can help you familiarize yourself with what’s new.
Upgraded e-Classrooms
What’s new: This summer IRM completed technology upgrades to the remaining 42 traditional classrooms on the Boca Raton, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Treasure Coast, and Jupiter campuses.
Why it’s important to me: The upgraded e‐classrooms are multimedia rooms that provide state‐of‐the art technology that will aid and enhance both the teaching and learning experiences.
Tell me more . . .
Upgraded classroom features include:
• A secure teaching console with desktop computer and flat‐screen monitor
• Network connectivity, including laptop connection • DVD/VCR player • Ceiling‐ or wall‐mounted speakers • Ceiling‐mounted LCD projector • Document cameras are available upon request • Remote monitoring of projection systems to track lamp life and
prevent theft • Remote performance of trouble‐shooting and diagnostic tasks by
campus AV staff
How IRM can help: Instructors are encouraged to visit the rooms before classes begin and to schedule time with campus AV staff for personal orientation and training. For more information, contact Joanne Julia, 6‐8514 (Northern Campuses), Alberto Fernández, 6‐1205 (Broward Campuses), and Audiovisual Services, 7‐3707 (Boca Raton Campus).
& On July 17, 2008, IRM and FAU bid farewell to Jeffrey Schilit. Dr. Schilit retired after 31 years of service, the last 18 as Associate Provost and CIO of IRM. His successor, Jason Ball, comes to FAU from Florida Tech. After being here only a few months, I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead at FAU. We will be reaching out for broad participation in creating a renewed vision for IRM.
You will see an emphasis on improved access for wireless and mobility, support for teaching and learning, and emerging technologies
I look forward to establishing partnerships with the Colleges and Departments to meet our mutual objectives.

Elluminate
What’s new: FAU has expanded its Elluminate license to include unlimited use.
Why it’s important to me: You can now use Elluminate for department meetings, training sessions, presentations, or any other setting where participants at different locations want to communicate and share materials synchronously online. These web conferences can also be recorded so that participants can review a presentation or watch it later if they were unable to attend the session.
How IRM can help: If you want to use Elluminate, submit a helpdesk ticket at http://www.fau.edu/helpdesk to request moderator access, which allows you to set up sessions. You may then register for free online moderator training provided by Elluminate. This training consists of three one‐hour live sessions or a recorded 20‐minute session. If you already use or are planning to use Elluminate through Blackboard you do not need to submit a request because this tool is automatically available to instructors.
New Blackboard Tools
What’s new: Two new tools are available to Blackboard users: LockDown Browser and StudyMate Class Server.
Why it’s important to me: LockDownBrowser reduces cheating in online exams and assessments. StudyMate Class Server enables instructors and students to work together to create study materials and self‐assessments in Blackboard.
Tell me more . . .
LockDown Browser Features:
• This customized web browser prevents students from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment.
• Exams or assignments set up in Blackboard and requiring LockDown Browser are not accessible with a standard web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.
• Students are locked into the assessment until it is submitted for grading.
StudyMate Class Server Features: • This tool allows collaborative preparation of study materials and self‐assessments in Blackboard. • Software provides simple templates for entering glossary terms, lecture facts, sample problems, or multiple
choice questions. • Students can view collective materials using interactive games, self‐assessments, or quizzes. • Depending on the editing rights set by the instructor, students can edit the contributions of others.
How IRM can help: Visit http://www.fau.edu/irm/blackboard/lockdown_browser.php for further information about LockDown Browser, installation instructions, and demos/tutorials. For more information about StudyMate Class Server, visit http://www.fau.edu/irm/blackboard/studymate_class_server.php.
Training is available for both tools. View our training schedule at https://swise/fau.edu/training.

DID YOU KNOW . . .
You Can Customize the “Look and Feel” of Your Blackboard Course
Did you know you can take your Blackboard course site from generic to customized in just a few easy steps? This is a great way to let students know that you’re engaged and really care about their experience in your course.
Today’s students are web‐savvy. If they think your site is “clunky,” they probably think you put it together as an afterthought, and they will probably ignore it after the first look. If they find your site “sleek,” they are more likely to come back to check out what’s new. Substance is important, but don’t overlook the impact of style! If your course is fully online it’s an important way to convey your personality to your students.
“Look and feel” refers to aspects such as:
• Color scheme for both buttons/text menu • Color‐coding the titles of different types of content: red for readings, green for assignments, blue for quizzes • Modifications to the default course menu • Designing a unique course banner • Creative use of graphics
Even if you stick with the generic course menu (Course Information, Course Documents, Assignments, etc.) don’t leave any of these areas empty. If you don’t plan on using an area, remove it from the course menu. Don’t leave a “dead end.”
Instructors usually organize their Blackboard course menus so they focus on the various tools the software uses. You can also organize your menu according to the content, by weeks, topics, chapters, or units. Say each unit is going to have readings, links to video clips, a discussion board, and quizzes. You could have the units as the items on the course menu and link to the relevant tools within each unit.
Layout and organization are also important.
• Include a handy “site map” for your course site in the syllabus to help students find things. • Make navigation easier by adding links to discussion forums directly from a content area. For example, in
Module 1 you have your readings, quizzes, assignments, etc. as well as a direct link to the discussion questions.
• If you aren’t sure that your layout and organization “work” ask your students; what seems logical to you may not be so logical to them.
Your site shouldn’t be too “static”: try to add new items now and then, even if it’s only an announcement.
Don’t forget to include your students in this customization process by giving them the opportunity to create their own student homepages in Blackboard. Alternatively, create a discussion board “ice-breaker” forum. These features can serve as introductory activities at the beginning of the semester. Students can post photos of themselves, links to favorite websites, and other pertinent information (major, future goals, reason for taking your course, etc.).
