There are numerous rail vacation packages available in the U.S. (on Amtrak) and in Canada (on Via Rail)—who knew? These can be fairly simple or as elaborate as your budget allows. An example is the Glacier National Park Express. 10 days/9 nights one-way on the Empire Builder from Chicago to Glacier National Park to Seattle. Maybe a steamboat river cruise is more to your liking? The American Queen Steamboat Compa- ny offers trips on the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Cumberland, Illinois, Columbia, and Snake Rivers. Accommodations range from luxury suites to basic state- rooms. Tour fares include on-board meals and beverages, shore excursions, entertainment, lectures, and themed events. Along the way there are stops and side trips at Mackinac Island, Manitoulin Island, Killbear Park, The Henry Ford Museum, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and Niagara Falls. Today’s Program… Travel for Seniors

Deb Jones introduced today’s speaker, Virginia Davis from Main Street Travel of Dexter. Ms. Davis has over 20 years experience in the travel industry and provided an overview of some interesting U.S. travel options that are a bit different. She fo-cused on rail travel packages, steamboat river cruises, and Great Lakes cruises.

Along the way you’ll enjoy side tours and stay in a historic railway lodge dating from the late 19th century. Current cost for this trip is $2,499 per person/double occupancy.

Maybe a steamboat river cruise is more to your liking? The American Queen Steamboat Compa-ny offers trips on the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Cumberland, Illinois, Columbia, and Snake Rivers. Accommodations range from luxury suites to basic state-rooms. Tour fares include on-board meals and beverages, shore excursions, entertainment, lectures, and themed events. One of their longer cruises is The Mighty Mississippi—a 16 day cruise from Minneapolis to New Orleans starting at $4,999 per person/double occupancy.

Great Lakes cruising is making a comeback and Alexander+Roberts offers one of the best tours. The mv Victory I carries only 202 pas-sengers with a staff of 80. You can enjoy fine accommodations and dining on a ten day cruise from Chicago to Toronto. Along the way there are stops and side trips at Mackinac Island, Manitoulin Island, Killbear Park, The Henry Ford Museum, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and Niagara Falls. As Virginia said, this tour is a bit dear start-ing at $5,699 per person/double occupancy.

Guests at Our Club… Today’s guests included Alex Bowman, Kiwanis Staff; Major Kris Wood from the Salvation Ar-my; Dolores Schneider, Claire Dahl’s mother; and Circle K members Skylar Gleason, Jill Da-vidson, and Jaylene Gutierrez. Welcome all!

Hospitality… Lynne Lande reported that Jim Wheaton’s health has taken a turn for the worse and he has been admitted to the hospital. Please keep Jim and family in your thoughts and prayers.

The club will be sending Christmas cards to members unable to attend meetings, and the widows/families of deceased members. Lynne has placed the cards in the meeting room. They will be there for member signing next Monday as well.

Announcements… The Thrift Sale will be closed on December 23, but will be open 9am-1pm on December

22, 29, and 30.

President Preston reported that over 445 volunteer hours were contributed at the club and sale this week, and over 3,500 hours have been contributed since October. We will continue tracking volunteer hours as the year goes on.

Emily Allshouse (sic) has bravely volunteered to take on the duties of Club Kitchen Man-ager. Thanks Emily!

The Sale Intake Department needs help! Contact Gretchen Preston to volunteer.

Parking on Sale Days—To make space for our many shoppers, please park in the back of the lot or on the gravel if you are able.

Notice to All—We are working on the heat in the sorting area. The problem will be cor-rected.

Ken Hillenburg asked everyone to go to SignUpGenius.com to register. Once you re-ceive an email invitation (coming soon to everyone) you will be able to sign up for volun-teer activities. Contact Ken with questions. Ken also said the Digest is available in the Members Only section of the club website. It can be downloaded from there to smartphones and other devices.

Nick Dever asked that everyone return KCD keys to him or Tanya. Also, we need a drone survey of Honey Creek from our property to Zeeb Road. Contact Nick if you can help.

Jim Carey ([email protected]) is looking for volunteers for the Mott Hospital event.

Warm the Children—Help families on a winter clothing shopping trip with vouchers. Contact Mary Stewart, 734-945-4955 or [email protected].

Salvation Army Bell Ringing—Saturday, December 23rd. Two-hour shifts—spouses and families welcome. Contact Garry Evans, 734-223-6760; [email protected].

Greg Meisner needs help removing club paraphernalia from KCD and taking it to KCW. Please meet him at KCD on Wednesday and/or Thursday this week starting at 2pm and wrapping up about 4pm.

Fines… Dan Dever proposed a fine on the Dahl family and tablemates due to tardiness, which passed. Nick Dever proposed fining Dave Drake over his lost and found hat. That also passed. Unfortunately, no one collected the fines—wait until next week!

Happy Dollars… President Gretchen was happy for the 20 people representing at least four countries

who shared her Thanksgiving Day table.

Lynne Lande was happy to have Lucy (Evan LeRoy’s daughter) as co-greeter and pop-corn-maker at last week’s sale.

Claire Dahl was happy to have her mother present and for Magic of Christmas that is putting KCD to good use for our community.

Peter Schork was happy for all that Secretary Kathie Wilder does for the club, and for a remarkably happy group of volunteers who enjoyed a toast at the last KCD sale.

Skylar Gleason of Circle K had five Happy Dollars for the snow; for studying abroad in Argentina; for Jaylene Gutierrez, her successor as Kiwanis Family Relations Chair; for the check of support from our club; and for publishing her first children’s book (in memory of her brother).

Jill Davidson, President of UM Circle K, was happy for Circle K’s 163 members as of year end.

Dick Smit was happy to be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army again this year and encouraged everyone to sign up.

Emily Allshouse (sic) was happy that her identity has been confirmed… she thinks.

Garry Evans was happy to remind everyone to bring their Salvation Army donations to next week’s meeting. Also, that bell-ringing help is mostly needed in the 2:30-5pm slot.

Speaking of Salvation Army Bell Ringing… Garry Evans introduced Major Kris Woods who thanked our club for our bell ringing efforts. It’s always a great day for the Salvation Army and our day is the last for bell ring-ing this year. The big news is an anonymous donor is matching whatever we raise on the 23rd, so ring those bells!

Remember to Bring Mott Pot Donations Next Monday!

Sale and Transition to KCW Weekly News/Updates... Sales the past weekend at KCW were $9,222 adding the last Holiday Sale at KCD and eBay sales gave us total sales of $10,230 for the week. We are still awaiting inspections and a Certificate of Occupancy to be issued before we can use Room 1100 for sales space. The racks are in the room and some shelving on the walls in preparation for clothes to be removed from boxes moved from KCD.

I would like to remind all volunteers that you are invited to be a guest of the Club for lunch at the Volunteer Luncheon on Monday, December 18 at 11:30 AM. Please RSVP to Jane Talcott at [email protected] or 734-428-8890 ASAP. Special recognition will be given to the 2017-18 Honored Volunteers. We hope all volunteers will attend. Notices are posted in sev-eral locations at KCD and the announcement was in last week’s Newsletter. ~Bob Gray

Santa Makes a Visit… Santa (aka Greg Meisner) made an appearance at last week’s sale and will return this Saturday from 11am to 1pm. Parents who provide an email address can received an emailed photo of their child’s visit with Santa. It seems a fair number of young-at-heart Kiwanians also wanted a photo with Santa…

Holiday Tie Awarded… Dan Dever presented a lovely holiday tie to you-know-who at Monday’s meeting.
