Teacher’s Notes: Middle Primary

Before Startingl Students will need to access specifi c websites to complete some activities.

Set up a folder of website links for easy student access. To avoid confusion, we suggest giving each link the name in bold used in the booklet.

u Hosting History https://www.thecgf.com/games/games_index.asp

u History of our suburbs http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/thegoldcoast/history-of-our-suburbs-2557.html

u Table Tennis https://www.gc2018.com/sport/table-tennis

u Venues https://www.gc2018.com/sports/venues

l Photocopy the student activity sheets.l Follow the directions to make one example booklet:

u Fold the sheet in half lengthways — text facing out.

u Keep folded, then fold in half again widthways, then in half again — score well with fi ngernails or a ruler. (See diagram 1)

u Open up, re-fold in half widthways so the dotted cut line is visible.

u Cut the centre of the page along the dotted line — only cut as far as the end of the line.

u Open up again. Place the page face up in front of you so the cut is vertical; pinch horizontally either side of the cut and gently pull the centre apart while folding in half vertically.

u Fold the pages into a booklet. (See diagram 2)

What it will look like!A mini concertina booklet with eight pages and four activities.

Commonwealth G ames — Interesting Informationl The Commonwealth is a voluntary association that comprises

countries that were formerly British colonies.l Only countries from the Commonwealth can compete in the Commonwealth Games (CG).l The fi rst CG was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada, with 400 athletes from 11 countries competing in

59 events across 6 sports.l Over the years the Games have grown, with the Gold Coast 2018 Games hosting 6600 athletes/

offi cials from 70 nations/territories competing in 277 events across 18 sports and 7 para sports.

u The Core Values of the Games are Humanity, Equality and Destiny.

u The CG are often referred to as the ‘Friendly Games’ and aim to unite Commonwealth countries through sport.

l 2018 is the XXI (21st) Commonwealth Games.l The Kombumerri people were the original inhabitants of large parts of the area now known as the

Gold Coast. The local dialect of the region is Yugambeh, which is where the 2018 mascot, Borobi, gets its name — Borabi means ‘koala’.
