For those that prefer warmer outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, golfing or boating we have good news. Not only is the weather turning warmer but Summer will officially be here on Friday, June 21! June is a great time to get out and enjoy all that Mecosta County has to offer. At the Mecosta County CVB, we have been busy planning and promoting great events and things to do in the greater Big Rapids area. We have all the information you need to start planning your own summer adventure either online at BigRapids.org or in person at the Welcome Center on 127 S. State St. The Mecosta County CVB is also opening and staffing the Welcome Center on Saturdays from June through August, 9:00am-2:00pm, in addition to our normal Mon-Fri hours of 9:00am- 5:00pm. Golf season is already in full “swing” here in Mecosta County. Both the amateur and professional golfer won’t be disappointed with any of our local greens and fairways. Mecosta County is home to five (5) courses including PGM and PGA rated courses. Pair up a great day on the links with one of our amazing hotels and you are sure to experience a golf package to remember. Get your group of four or more together and schedule your golf package today. Not sure where to start? We are also excited to be partnering with the Chicago District Golf Association this year. The Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA) is the regional governing body for amateur golf in Illinois and parts of three other states. The CDGA services nearly 400 clubs and over 80,000 individual golfers. Midwest Golf House and its Three-Hole Sunshine Course are home to their Foundation, which annually serves more than 1,000 individuals with special needs and wounded veterans while also bringing playing opportunities to youth golfers. Founded on March 18, 1914, the CDGA is one of the largest and oldest golf associations in the United States. You can visit the CDGA website at CDGA. org to find out more information on their organization, upcoming events along with promotional information on Mecosta County and GolfBR.org. The CDGA also publishes a monthly, high gloss golf magazine which has had various GolfBR.org ads in prior publications. For this month of June, Mecosta County and GolfBR.org are their featured destination. Not only are we on the cover of the magazine but we have a very large presence in the publication as well! We have a limited supply of magazines here at the Welcome Center or you can view the digital copy online at the CDGA website’s homepage. Big Rapids is also now the proud home of the Ken Janke, Sr. Golf Hall of Fame, located at the FSU Katke Golf Club. The 9,500 square-foot, two-story, $3.5 million facility is now open with an array of four TrackMan golf simulators. The center is positioned as one of the top five facilities in the United States, in terms of virtual play presentation. The TrackMan units offer 39 choices of simulated, authentic gameplay on some of the most famous courses in the world. The facility includes three heated indoor hitting bays, which can be opened to the adjoining practice area of Katke Golf Course, and an indoor putting green is available for player practice and instruction. Topgolf Swing Suite, located at Tullymore in Stanwood, is an immersive experience offering a comfortable lounge to play and enjoy fantastic food and drinks. Check out one of Mecosta County’s five (5) Disc Golf Courses. Disc Golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, though, players use a flying disc or Frisbee®. The sport was formalized in the 1970s and shares with golf the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws. Two days twice a year, families can enjoy one of Michigan’s premiere outdoor activities, fishing, for free. This year’s summer dates are June 10 and 11. All fishing license fees will be waived for two days. Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes’ waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations still apply. Be sure and visit the Mecosta County CVB’s fishing page at BigRapids.org/fishing for all things fishing. Also on the weekend of June 8 & 9 you can ride routes and trails designated by the Michigan DNR without an ORV license or trail permit during the second Free ORV Weekend this year. Father’s Day is just around the corner and what better way to celebrate with dad than at the Crusin’ Downtown Big Rapids Car Show. On Saturday, June 15, from 11:00am-4:00pm the Big Rapids Pioneer and the Mecosta County CVB present the Cruisin’ Downtown Car Show. Registration will be begin at 10:00am. The day will be fun-filled with an array of cars, trucks, motorcycles, live music by the Balsam Brothers, trophies, food and more. Everyone is invited to attend or participate in the event. Music is definitely abundant this summer in Mecosta County. The Canadian Lakes - Lakeside Motor Sports Summer Concert Series is free and offers an amazing lineup of musicians. The Ferris Community Summer Band Concert Series kicked off its summer series June 5 and runs every Wednesday evening (plus Thursday June 27) through July 3.
