You may have heard the tale of banishing snakes from the land of Ireland or identify the holiday with leprechauns, pots of gold and rainbows; none of these are truly connected to St. Patrick in reality. Of British origin, St. Patrick was born to a life of wealth. He came to Ireland as a prisoner at the age of 16 until he was 22. As a prisoner, St. Patrick learned shepherding and spent most of his time connecting to God and delving into Christianity. Upon turning 22 he decided to escape from Ireland and traveled 200 miles by foot to the coast. Upon return to Britain, he began religious training and after 15 years, returned to the land that had held him captive. This is where he spent his years sharing Christianity until his death on March 17, around 460 A.D. To this day, St. Patrick is celebrated throughout the world on each March 17, although the focus has been adjusted over the years. While still celebrated as a religious holiday in Ireland, most other countries around the world celebrate the day with Irish drink and food, the color green and wishing each other a “lot of luck” for the year to come. “May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks. May your heart be as light as a song. May each day bring you bright, happy hours that stay with you all the year long.” Spring Forward! There’s no hiding that the Barrington has seen some remarkable changes and advances during fall, and we aren’t going to slow down this spring. Our community has expanded in volume and there are many new faces in the halls, attending activities and sitting nearby in the dining room. With great joy, we encourage everyone to get to know your new neighbors! Each resident has a unique journey that has brought you to the Barrington and many more experiences are to come. What is most exciting is that we get to walk through these experiences together! Our activity schedules are changing! Take some time to thoroughly review all we have planned for March and make a commitment to get involved, even if it is something unfamiliar to you. We have made it a point to collaborate on events and activities that support four influential areas of your well- being: spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social. We hope you’re as excited as we are for all these new opportunities! Take a look at the back cover for detailed information on many of these offerings.
