Parents Corner

We recently came across a resource from “Upbility”– a publisher of therapy resources – with a great metaphor to explain emotions to children while also equipping them with the things they’ll need in order to manage their responses. The image talks of a child’s emotional cup – what empties it, ways children deal with an empty cup, and what fills it so they can ensure it’s always full. The cup is a metaphor for positive emotions. So if your child's cup is full it means they’re content and happy. Sometimes when a child

may find their cup is empty, they may try to “steal from other people's cups”, or in simpler terms, steal from their happiness, or “bounce off the walls when they approach empty” – react in a less that savoury way. Ockwell-Smith explains that violent behaviour does often occur when a child feels vulnerable, anxious or as if they have no control over a situation. This has to do with their inability to regulate their emotions, she says. So while they speak of things be aware of what may empty a child’s cup,

Use the emotional cup to explain to your kids why it’s important for them to identify how they’re feeling, to come to you if they are running on empty, and what they can do to ensure their cup is always full. Emphasise the importance of always taking care of themselves and their mental health (and no, selfishness will not fill up the cup). Remind them that no matter what they do, they can never pour from an empty cup.

Filling your child’s emotional cup.

Refer to the poster on the next page to find ways to fill your child’s emotional cup.

A reminder that all Go-Kart Sponsorship Forms must be

returned to school by Thursday, 31 May 2018.

Please try not to return an

empty form, but if that is not possible, please ensure that the form is returned as it is a

legal document.

LEARNERS LEAVING BEFORE OR AT THE END OF THE TERM

Parents of learners leaving Glenstantia before the end of the Term, or not returning for Term 3 2019, must please inform the school in writing as soon as possible, either in hardcopy or via email [email protected] . We require the child’s name, surname, grade and class, the last day at Glenstantia Primary School and the reason for leaving.

Please note that no parking is allowed in front of any of the gates leading in and out of the school or homes around the school. We are experiencing increase in vehicles stopping in front of the school gates in Anton van Wouw Street while dropping / collecting learners. Under no circumstances may a vehicle block any of the school gates, you could potentially block a vehicle that has to enter or exit in an emergency situation.

immunisation cards etc.) carry a cost of R20.00. Please pay at the Finance Office.

Lets Teach our children not to be litter bugs!

The amount of litter in

and outside our school

grounds is alarming. We

urge our parents to

please assist us with this

ongoing problem.

Why is it bad to litter? 1. Litter is bad for our environment 2. It is a sign of disrespect 3. It defaces our community.

Litter Prevention

1. Choose not to litter 2. Remind others not to litter 3. Get a litter bag.

How can parents assist the school with the litter problem

1. Parents must lead by example 2. Do not throw litter out of the moving car 3. Do not throw cigarette butts out of your car

window 4. Keep a litter bag in the car 5. Encourage your children to clean after

themselves 6. Comment about the rubbish along our

roads and emphasize how bad it is for our environment

7. Volunteer as a family in your community to help clean-up litter.

International Day for Biological Diversity

It will be International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May and the theme for 2019 is “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health” which emphasises the importance of healthy ecosystems. In the last 100 years 90% of crop varieties have disappeared and indigenous traditional and local knowledge is being lost because of modern monocrop farming methods. The loss of diverse diets is linked to many diseases. To celebrate this day, Friends of Serene Valley invite you to join us for a Foraging Walk on Saturday, 18 May at 09:00 until about 10:30. We will meet at the Lola Ave gate. Although biodiversity refers to all forms of life, we will look mainly at the plants and talk about their uses. I will prepare some of the edible plants for you to try. If it is raining heavily the walk will be postponed but otherwise will go ahead. It is free of

charge and all are welcome.
