In today’s tough economy, every business is forced to evaluate its expenses. Even expenses that pass the necessary test are being closely examined. As your company looks for opportunities to save, consider your deployment of A4 versus A3 devices. You’ll likely find they are out of balance.

How often do you print 11” x 17”?How often do your users print on A3 or tabloid-size (11” x 17”) paper? If your company is like most, it’s not very often. In fact, studies completed by IDC

and NewField IT reveal that less than 3 percent of pages produced are A3, and yet, A3-capable devices make up 24 percent of unit placements.

Why do so many businesses continue to deploy costly A3 copiers in their output fleet? The answer is simple: They’re basing their purchases on cost per

page, not the total cost of ownership.

The real cost of an A3 MFP Purchase costFor A3 (11” x 17” or tabloid) capabilities, analysis shows the buyer will pay a

premium for A3 from 100 percent to 220 percent over the acquisition of a similarly

configured A4 device, depending on the manufacturer.

FootprintThe footprint of a monochrome A3 MFP with finishing is much larger than that of an

A4 MFP with finishing – nearly twice as large. When you factor in the recommended

clearances for these units, you could place four A4 devices within the footprint of

just one A3 device.

Maintenance costThe cost of a maintenance kit for an A3 device is approximately 26 percent higher

than that for an A4 kit.

Energy costAn A3 device consumes more power because its fuser unit is 41 percent larger than

an A4 device. In addition, the entire unit heats up, regardless of whether the user is

printing an A4 page or an A3 page.

What copier companies won’t tell youWhile copier companies may offer you a low cost per page on their A3 MFPs, as a buyer you should beware. Over the course of a typical contract, the

total cost of ownership for those A3 devices can be up to 40 percent more expensive to operate than similarly configured A4 MFPs. That’s approximately

$7,000 per device over 36 months!

The chart below is taken from a special report prepared by Buyers Laboratory, Inc. (BLI) to help customers choose between similarly configured A4 MFPs

and A3 MFPs. The chart compares the total cost of ownership of these two types of MFPs over 36 months at print volumes of 10,000 pages per month

and 20,000 pages per month. The total cost includes everything from hardware acquisition price to the cost of paper.

Clearly, the A4 MFP is much less expensive to operate than the average A3 MFP, representing a savings of thousands of dollars.
