WELCOME TO THE 2017 UCOL SECONDARY SCHOOL PROSPECTUS. This is an exciting time for you as you decide which pathway you want to explore. We and your school are here to help you on that journey.

Inside this booklet you will find out about a huge range of opportunities available to you. From tasters through to full year programmes, UCOL offers you the chance to experiment and explore your career options before you even leave school.

• U-Skills Central Schools Academy – UCOL’s secondary tertiary partnership Programmes are designed to introduce you to the career of your dreams through practical learning while working towards NCEA.

• STAR – Our traditional taster Programmes with practical learning introduce you to an idea or topic within a career path.

Each offering has slightly different requirements and funding options so please read the introduction pages carefully for each. U-Skills offers a range of exciting opportunities to senior secondary school students. Our Programmes offer students the chance to gain NCEA credits and continue their pathway to the career of their dreams.

The U-Skills Programmes at UCOL give Year 11, 12 and 13 students an opportunity to develop core industry skills, support school work and provide a supportive introduction to tertiary learning. WHAT IS U-SKILLS?U-Skills Central Schools Academy is a Trades Academy run through UCOL. Our range of Programmes are designed to guide students through a vocational pathway, with the safety and support of school.

At U-Skills you will have access to industry-driven staff who have real experience in the real world. Our team have a range of skills to suit multiple needs and provide a supportive stepping stone, giving you a taste of tertiary, with the support of friends, routine and school.

This real experience provides you with tertiary learning one day a week, which is designed to compliment your secondary school work. The remaining four days, you attend your secondary school working towards NCEA.

SO HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?For you, the cost is your time, passion and effort. If you meet our entry criteria we will award students a “fees free” place, meaning there are no Programme fees. All you supply is your lunch and stationery.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAMME WORK?ELIGIBILITY

• Year 11 – 13 at Secondary School.• NZ Citizen or permanent resident, or hold a visa allowing

you to be enrolled in a secondary school (for a “fees free” place).

STRUCTURE

• Most U-Skills Programmes operate one day per week.• 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.• Variety of locations including UCOL sites, tertiary

premises, schools and community sites.

COST

• Fees Free where criteria is met.• Purchased places are available when allocation has been

exhausted.

STUDY

• Vocational Pathway and industry relevant standards which contribute to NCEA.

• Standards and projects are a mix of theory and practical.

TRANSPORT

Transport assistance is available upon meeting certain criteria.

ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS

Students must maintain appropriate attendance at both secondary school and U-Skills to remain enrolled in the U-Skills Programme.

CLASSES

Classes are exclusive for U-Skills students and have a range of 10 – 20 students.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• Students are dual enrolled in their secondary school and U-Skills for the period of academic study.

• To remain eligible for U-Skills students must be enrolled in a secondary school.

• Students cannot be enrolled in any other Trades Academy Programme.

READY TO CHOOSE YOUR PATH?Great! To attend U-Skills you must:

• Be returning to school for Year 11, 12 or 13 and have your school endorse your application. Please note: You cannot be enrolled in another Academy at the same time.

• You must be undertaking study towards NCEA. We recommend Academy students take a minimum of 4 subjects and NCEA subjects that support their career goals.

• You may be required to attend an interview with a parent or guardian to gain a place with U-Skills.

FINAL NOTEDelivery location is dependent on facilities and demand within the region. UCOL reserves the right not to deliver some Programmes.

Course locations will be confirmed once applications for each Programme are finalised. Student transport can be provided by U-Skills at no cost to the nearest course of choice (subject to conditions).

Unit standards delivered within each Programme are NZQA framework key vocational units from industry training and contribute towards the students’ NCEA results. The selection of units delivered will be consistent with the Programme aim and learning objective.

A verified copy of your birth certificate refers to a copy which has been signed by a Justice of the Peace, NZ Police or a UCOL Staff member. This confirms that the copy is a true photocopy of the sited original.

WHAT WILL I GAIN?U-Skills you will gain a range of experiences which will help you in your future career pathways. As well as the NCEA approved credits, you will also learn about the realities of working and studying in their chosen field of study.

You will have a dedicated Transition Coordinator who will help you transition through the Programme, develop core skills and grow your knowledge base to help you succeed.

WHAT DOES U-SKILLS LOOK AND FEEL LIKE? Knowing U-Skills runs one day a week (in most cases), and operates from 9:00am – 3:00pm, what will you be doing when you are here? Programme specific details can be found on the respective pages but in general:

• All U-Skills classes start promptly at 9:00 AM. We have a large amount of work to get through during your time with us so it is important we start on time every day.

• Students will receive a mix of theory and practical lessons ranging from Health and Safety to project builds (Programme dependent). Our team work hard to ensure you are getting a good mix of units and experiences with us.

• Students will occasionally have additional work to complete outside of the classroom.

• Students are expected to maintain 80% attendance at both secondary school and U-Skills.

• Students are expected to adhere to working environment conditions.

• Students will also have the opportunity to see businesses in industry, and if students are achieving well will have the opportunity to complete work shadowing placements.

• Students have a dedicated Transition Coordinator who help them: - Set goals- Complete individual education plans- With literacy and numeracy Support- With one on one support- Support to transition into the correct career pathway for them

The key benefit of being a U-Skills students is that you are able to gain experience and knowledge in a supportive environment designed with your best interests as the focus.

APPLICATION, SELECTION & ENROLMENT

APPLICATION PROCESSSecondary school students can apply to enrol in a U-Skills Programme by completing the enrolment form in this brochure. Enrolments will be taken from September 2016 until 1 February 2017. Applications after this date will be considered on a case by case basis. Students applying to U-Skills must meet the following criteria:

• They must be continuing their education in Year 11, 12 or 13 in 2017 at secondary school. (This includes Te Kura Correspondence School).

• Students are required to have achieved NCEA Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements i.e 10 Credits at level 1, however the U-Skills Management may exercise discretion on this requirement. Supporting evidence will assist the selection process and may include records of learning, reports and attendance records. These can be provided by the students school.

• Students must demonstrate their commitment to remaining at school and study towards NCEA for 2017.

• Students must have endorsement from whänau/family/ caregivers and School Principal or delegate for their enrolment in the U-Skills Programme.

• Students must meet legal and health requirements and be able to carry out the practical components of the Programmes. U-Skills may decline to enrol an applicant whose disability is such that the applicant requires special services or facilities that in the circumstances cannot reasonably be made available in accordance with Section 60(1) of the Human Rights Act 1993.

SELECTION PROCESSThe student selection process may include an interview of the student with the U-Skills Manager and may include the Transition Coordinator, Tutor or other persons including a school representative. A letter will be sent to applicants with interview details.

Whänau/parents/caregivers are requested to accompany the student to learn about the expectations of the Programme. The interview process will include:

• Assessment of the applicants understanding and commitment to this Programme and suitability for the career area to be studied to ensure the applicant has applied to a Programme that aligns with their goals and interests.

• Assessment of support from whänau/parents/caregivers of the student.

• Assessment of any other information put forward that supports the application.

• Identification of any specific learning or support needs.

• Expectations include attendance and punctuality, work experience, block courses, careers development etc.

• Timetable and transport arrangements required to and from U-Skills and for work experience.

ACCEPTANCE / DECLINE• The decision on whether students are accepted into the

U-Skills Academy will be made by U-Skills Management.

• Places will be made available for inclusion of suitable students from as wide a geographical area as possible. All students are interviewed on a rating system to ensure fairness and transparency.

• Students will be notified of the outcome of their application as soon as possible.

• Students will receive a letter and an agreement of the terms and conditions they need to sign and return to confirm acceptance of the place offered at U-Skills.

• Students must return the offer agreement to have a place on the Programme. Schools will be notified once this has taken place.

INDUCTION & ORIENTATIONU-Skills Programmes will start early February 2016. We will advise of the day each Programme is delivered on as soon as possible.

All accepted students will undertake an orientation process as part of the first weeks of the U-Skills Programme which will include:

• Welcome; Getting to know the U-Skills teaching and support staff, and other students.

• Overview of the Programme and an information handbook.

• Students will undergo ALNAT literacy and numeracy assessment.

• Programme regulations, policies and procedures.

• Information on student support services. Primarily this will be through the Transition Coordinator who is the main point of contact for students and who will direct them to other services as required. (Pastoral care, Health, Disability, Learning support, Careers, Mäori and Pasifika).

• Health and Safety procedures.

• Tour of facilities and if onsite at a UCOL facility, how to use the Library.

• Any equipment or uniform as applicable will be provided.

• Introduction to computer facilities at U-Skills, including logging in and using UCOL’s system and set up on Pathways Awarua.

• Obtaining a student ID card which will allow students to use the UCOL Library; free bus in some locations such as Palmerston North or Whanganui and student discounts at local stores.

• Communication processes, including U-Skills Facebook, student notice boards, text, and any other communication methods used in the Programme.

Note: U-Skills students are not able to join the UCOL Student Association or the UCOL Health Centre.

WHAT IS STAR?STAR are short courses designed to help you explore your career options. Usually one day per week for five to six weeks (you will be notified if this timeframe is different). Our range of Programmes give you an opportunity to get tertiary experience while staying at school.

WHAT DOES IT COST?There is a fee for each STAR Programme which is funded via your secondary school (with their approval). All teaching resources will be included in this fee, however you will need to bring a pen, paper and your lunch each week.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAMME WORK?ELIGIBILITY
