This results in bones that are brittle which leads to easy fractures. Osteoporosis can affect any bone in the body but of special concern are fractures of the hip, wrist and spine due to their serious health consequences and implications such as loss of mobility. Although Osteoporosis can affect men it is overwhelmingly prevalent in postmenopausal women. Women are four times more likely to develop the disease than men due to growth differences. Osteoporosis is caused by the body when bone creation occurs at a slower rate than normal which reduces bone density and strength. This results in weak and brittle bones. Doctors have found diagnosing osteoporosis difficult because bone loss occurs without symptoms. In the early stages, sufferers will not feel any symptoms. Some of the signs used to identify osteoporosis are include back pain, stooped posture and frequent broken bones from minor injuries. If you are showing any of these signs then we advise you to consult your doctor. There are many factors that determine who will develop osteoporosis. The first step in prevention is to determine whether you are at risk, since not everyone is. The risk factors include: Age - People who are older are at higher risk. This is because when people get older, their bones get weaker. Family History - If anyone in your family has suffered from Osteoporosis, then there is greater risk that you will develop it also. Gender - As mentioned before, females are at greater risk than males. There are a few treatments available for Osteoporosis. These include taking prescribed drugs to stimulate and help the formation of new bones. Hormone replacement is also effective as a treatment. This method is popular with women and is called Estrogen Replacement Therapy. EFT is replaces estrogen and progesterone hormones in the body to help stop bone loss, increase bone density and cut the risk of fractures up to 50 per cent. One method which has been proven to be highly beneficial in the treatment of osteoporosis is exercise. Anyone can exercise and start feeling the health benefits. If you suffer from osteoporosis you should be working to improve bone density and muscle mass. The recommended exercises are aerobics, jogging, weight lifting and resistance training. The effects of osteoporosis can be virtually reduced by using exercise as a treatment and it is a very popular and in-expensive remedy.
