Shape It Up OBJECTIVE: Recognizing shape names and ATTRIBUTES (something that tells us about the shape, such as: size, color, number of angles, or number of sides). Your child will practice making larger shapes out of smaller shapes. What You Need: Allow your child time to freely explore the materials provided for this game. As your child plays with the blocks ask them to describe what they create. Using other blocks, make a shape just like the blue rhombus. You can stack the blocks on top of one another to help you build. Using other blocks, make a shape just like the red trapezoid. Using other blocks, make a shape just like the yellow hexagon. See how many different ways you can make a shape. Remember, there is no one right way! Make a design using 5 or more pattern blocks and ask your child to copy it with their own blocks. Trace around a design with 4 blocks and then ask your child to cover it with 4 blocks that fit. WARNING: Small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3 years. XPLORE LAY LAY SK: “How did you make the shape?” “Is there another way that you could make the shape? How else could you make it?” SK: “Tell me about the design you created with the blocks.” SK: “What’s similar (the same) and what’s different about the hexagons you built?” “Tell me about the new shape that you made.” SK: “What do you notice about the design I made?” “How do you know which blocks to use to recreate the design?” UILD 1 2 3 4 ©
