The $1,000 gift will be used to digitize 2,000 feet of 16mm films from high school sporting events for Schulte, Garfield, Wiley, Gerstmeyer, Honey Creek and West Vigo. On December 20, 2016, the Wabash Valley Community Foundation entered its 25 th year. In commemoration of this milestone, the Community Foundation, together with its affiliates the Clay County Community Foundation and Sullivan County Community Foundation, developed the 25 th Anniversary Grant program as a way to give back to the communities. The 25 th Anniversary Grant program, which began July 7, awards one nonprofit agency per week for the 25 weeks leading up to the Community Foundation’s 26 th Anniversary. The grant application contains two questions: What can your agency do with $1,000 and why is it important? Though not a requirement, preference is given to projects that are semi-permanent, solve a problem or can be fully funded with an extra $1,000. The first anniversary gift, presented to Brazil Main Street in Clay County, was used to purchase a projector and sound equipment needed for the group’s Annual Free Family Summer Movie Nights. The events, which are family friendly and free to the public, provide summer entertainment, games and snacks to the Brazil community. Should I Choose a Donor-Advised Fund with the Community Foundation or create a Private Foundation?

Establishing a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) with the Community Foundation may be more attractive than creating a private foundation as we offer a low cost, hassle free alternative for individuals wanting to be philanthropic.

A DAF in the Community Foundation can be established quickly and inexpensively. Because the Community Foundation is a public charity, the tax deduction limit for contributions to DAFs is greater than the tax deduction limit for contributions to a private foundation. DAFs also provide anonymity as to contributions and grants. The Community Foundation provides staff to handle the administration of your fund and to help you as you recommend grants from your DAF.

A private foundation is an independent legal entity and require creation of a board, approval by the IRS and other legal actions. A private foundation also is required to file annually with the IRS and maintain board minutes and other documentation. It is more expensive to establish and time consuming to maintain.

Private foundations have created a DAF within the Community Foundation to support causes and nonprofit agencies that are outside the general focus of the private foundation, to meet their payout requirement or to build funds to make a larger grant later. Some individuals have elected to convert their private foundations to DAFs in the Community Foundation because the process of using a Donor-Advised Fund is so simple.

When you work with the Community Foundation to achieve your philanthropic goals, you are able to establish a customized charitable fund – without the cost of administrative hassles associated with setting up a private foundation. Everyone who creates a fund can personalize their giving, and it can be done for as little as $5,000! Funds within the Community Foundation are pooled for investment management purposes to minimize costs and achieve a greater return, making it possible for a smaller individual fund to enjoy the same economies of scale as a large, independent foundation.

We offer flexibility, convenience, tax-advantages, long-term stability, expertise in financial management and grant making, and credibility. If you would like to discuss your options regarding establishing a Donor-Advised Fund within the Community Foundation, please give us a call at 812.232.2234. We are ready to serve as your partner in philanthropy!

wvcf.com

The new wvcf.com website features a clean, uncluttered design to better meet the needs of users and visitors. The homepage clearly highlights our mission and allows for streamlined navigation by focusing on three pertinent areas: Giving and Investing, Grants and Scholarships, and About. Though we kept the same online scholarship, grant and giving platforms, it was important that our new website be restructured to clearly inform our communities of Community Foundation news and available resources, as well as let potential donors know how funds are being invested and utilized. The modern and easy-to-navigate design allows visitors to find exactly what they need – from getting to know more about the Community Foundation, to learning how to create a fund!

Visit the new wvcf.com at home or on the go with our mobile and tablet-friendly design! Whether you are a donor, community member, grant or scholarship recipient, or volunteer, we are confident you will enjoy the ease of use of the new wvcf.com.

The new website, wvcf.com, is but one way the Community Foundation fulfills its mission to “engage people, build resources and strengthen community.”

We invite you to connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram to stay engaged in our work to improve the quality of life in our communities. For good. For ever.®

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new website!
