Earthquake

Protection

Lesson Objectives

Some pupils will understand that further research is

required into improving both the prediction and prepardness

for earthquakes in order to reduce the impact.

Most pupils will understand that people can be prepared for

earthquakes.

All pupils will understand that it is not possible to prevent

earthquakes.

Enquiry Question: How can people prepare for earthquakes?

To give Tsunami Warnings a series of

seismometershave been placed on the

Indian Ocean sea bed. When they sense

an earthquake a signal is sent to a

transmitter floating on the sea surface.

This sends a signal to a satellite – which

then informs Warning Centres on land.

They can then send out a warning to

coastal residents telling them to

evacuate the coast and head inland and

for higher land.

Copy the table into your exercise book. Decide when the

‘preparedness’ action would take place.

Do you think that scientists and

engineers should concentrate on

prediction or preparedness to help

reduce the impact of earthquakes in the

future?
