FRAUD INVESTIGATOR

XAVIERSTRATEGY ACE

“I’m in a team of agents that investigates people who owe the bank money — we’ve got special skills.

You need the right plan and the right skills. I had neither until I started this apprenticeship — I just dreamt about trainers and designer clothes — but now I have clear goals and a smart wardrobe, and in two years I’ve become the youngest highest level investigator in our unit.

I’ve also started my own design business, and I even have an apprentice working for me. I advise other school leavers who are thinking about becoming apprentices — I say ‘go for it’ because there’s a world of opportunities to discover once you’re in.

I’ve grown up loads and travelled the UK working in different offices, but I still like to go home and kick a ball about with my mates. Working as a team, thinking strategically, sticking to a game plan — that’s what this apprenticeship is giving me.”

STRATEGY ACE “Netball teaches me how to play to a strategy and communicate in a team.

And I go to evening classes to learn cake decorating — it teaches me to be patient and to concentrate on detail and patterns. I actually use similar skills in my apprenticeship, analysing financial data, identifying patterns and investigating things that don’t add up. We follow a particular strategy, always liaising closely with other teams to achieve a common goal.

My proudest moment was fixing an issue on an information-sharing site that had just gone live. After some quick investigation, I discovered the problem and solved it. It was one of those ‘Eureka!’ moments where you realise you can do it, and you don’t need to ask for help. I grew a lot after that.”

TECH MARVEL “In my spare time I plot my flight paths, at work I plan my future.

I’m a keen pilot. Nothing beats the feeling of flying, especially when you’re at the controls. And that’s what I like about this apprenticeship — I’m in control of my career, working with my mentor to go places.

I’ve just started my journey and I’m discovering all kinds of job possibilities. It’s only by being in a place, working, learning, earning, that you find out what’s available.

My advice is to get an apprenticeship in something that interests you and start exploring from the inside. I knew a bit about technology before I joined, and now I’m writing code for our mainframe computers, analysing how they’re performing, and working out their capacity for supporting the business.

I’m learning from experienced people, and even presenting to large groups of IT specialists, which for me is more nerve-racking than flying a plane — but I’m doing it and my confidence is going up and up.”

TECH MARVEL “Ice skating’s about balance, agility and flexibility — like my work.

Agile working, work-life balance, flexible hours — I get these as an apprentice. Two days a week I’m Miss Agile, working from home with my mobile phone, laptop and wifi, analysing and processing data, and in the office I do 6am to 3pm to avoid the rush hour. This leaves my evenings free for fashion blogging and skating, so I’m productive in and out of the office.

I recently hosted an apprentice networking event for school and college students, and I invited senior leaders from my network to come and promote our apprenticeships. I also got up on the podium and shared my experiences. University isn’t the only route to success. We’re all different — we just have to be agile and flexible in how we develop ourselves.”

ARE YOU A TECH MARVEL?

Are you curious about technology and drawn to innovation? Do you like being ahead of the game? Does the pace of change excite you? Are you constantly looking for a smarter way?

Tech Marvels are fascinated by the way technology connects with people. Quick to learn and naturally open to new ideas, they’re hands-on, moving us closer to the next big digital breakthrough. Tech Marvels make banking easier, quicker, safer and better for our customers and for our business.

BRANCH MANAGER

TOMRELATIONSHIP CHAMPION

“The most important thing about managing a branch? Be yourself.

I’m not even two years into my apprenticeship and already I’ve moved to another part of the country and been given my own high street branch to manage. I have my Nan to thank — she supported me when I left university early to start in customer services at my local branch.

Now I’m a branch manager, studying for a finance degree that’s getting me interested in the relationship between politics and the financial markets. It may even influence my next career move.

I go to the gym and it makes me stronger. But this apprenticeship, management position and degree are showing me strengths that the gym can’t. I’m becoming a leader and discovering new depths to my character.

Part of you thinks that when you’re made branch manager you should change and become someone else. But no — you should keep being who you are, building relationships, managing people your way and being true to yourself, which is why they hired you. That’s when you change naturally, without forcing it.”

RELATIONSHIP CHAMPION “My biggest strengths? Honesty, empathy, communication.

I realised I had these three qualities when I was a carer for elderly people. Now they’re coming out in my apprenticeship, and in my volunteering as an Adult Leader in Girlguiding UK.

At work I support small and medium-sized companies that have business accounts with us, so I have to be a good listener, calm and reliable. I love the busy environment, putting clients first, thinking ‘what more can I do for them?’ — just like we do in Girlguiding. I’m discovering that I enjoy changing things for the better.

This extends into my personal life and spurs me on with my fitness. I’m getting great results in the gym, I’ve qualified in my Girlguiding work, and I’ve just achieved my Level 6 Professional Banker’s Certificate. Bring on the next challenge!”

ARE YOU A RELATIONSHIP CHAMPION?

Do you enjoy relating to people? Do you have a sixth sense for how they tick? Can they depend on you?

Our Relationship Champions always put customers first, and they believe that working together to achieve a goal is more productive than going it alone. They’re quick-thinking, easy to be around, and able to see that every situation requires a different solution. Relationships Champions love building relationships with people and making a positive impact on people’s lives — it’s their way of changing the world for the better.

Relationship Champions usually apply for apprenticeships in Customer Facing.

PROJECT ASSISTANT

ELLIESOLUTIONS PRO

“Projects are about people — listening, organising, motivating, making sure we hit our deadlines.

I’ve coached athletics and taught swimming, so I know that timings are important, and this is so true when you’re learning to lead projects in a big organisation. How do you juggle the balls without dropping them? How do you keep a project on track?

It’s like playing Centre in a netball team, where the ball keeps coming to you, and you have to decide where to distribute it — that’s project management.

Also, how do you ask very busy senior people to deliver project information by a certain time? I can get a bit nervous about this because I’m still quite new, but my mentor is brilliant at supporting me. And people actually respond very positively — you just have to find the right way to communicate.

There are so many projects to get involved in. But right now I’m sticking to one and trying not to run before I can walk. I don’t want to drop anything!”

SOLUTIONS PRO “I had five university offers, but being an alternative thinker I chose an apprenticeship instead.

I wanted to help change perceptions about apprenticeships, so I went to 10 Downing Street and gave a presentation to support the UK Government’s Apprenticeships initiative. I also gave an interview to the Daily Mail about my own apprenticeship journey.

I went on to become ‘Divisional PMO Lead for the Transformation Portfolio of Change within Group Operations’ — a posh way of saying I manage a project team. I find solutions, often quite alternative ones, and report them ‘up the line’ to senior colleagues who we call ‘stakeholders’.

We’ve planned 8,000 new apprenticeships for 2020, so the opportunities here are almost as vast as my trek across the Grand Canyon to raise money to fight cancer. The future’s bright for apprentices.”

ARE YOU A SOLUTIONS PRO?

Do you like coming up with better ways to do things? Do you understand data and people? Can you see detail and the bigger picture? Are you creative and practical? Can you usually find an answer?

Solutions Pros are good at working on projects and solving problems. Their analytical side means they can plan, improve and see projects through, while their sense of leadership helps them to build strong team relationships. Solutions Pros deliver solutions because they know there’s always a better way.

Solutions Pros usually apply for apprenticeships in Customer & Business Management.

PEOPLE MAESTRO “I had A Levels and a place at uni, but I chose to kick-start my career and go straight into marketing.

I’m a sociable person, always happy to chat to people, although I also like to get things done. I was the under-18 rep on the committee for my local netball team and I get very passionate when I’m performing in a team, always wanting to do my best to help with morale and team bonding.

These personal qualities have come into play in my apprenticeship, making projects happen, and simplifying information about our financial products so that customers understand them, find them interesting, and ultimately choose them.

Obviously, I have regular face-to-face meetings, but I’m also discovering the importance of non-verbal communications, like writing good clear emails. If you like working with people, you’ll love this apprenticeship. I definitely got it right, starting my career now rather than later.”

PEOPLE MAESTRO “Apprenticeship? Like. Love. Follow.

I thought the Group was just high street branches, but it’s much bigger — there’s a world of opportunities here. I love going places and discovering new things, and I keep getting that feeling on this apprenticeship.

It’s opened my eyes to advertising on the street, on the radio, in social media. I think about the marketing strategies behind the slogans, the posts, the tweets, and I make presentations to agencies, challenging them to make our campaigns even more successful.

Challenges excite me, so I’m embarking on a 320-mile cycle ride soon. I bet along the way I’ll be thinking about where in the Group I want my next job to be. And when I see one of those huge advertising posters, I’ll definitely be thinking about the thinking behind it.”

ARE YOU A PEOPLE MAESTRO?

Do you like to grab people’s attention? Can you inspire them and shape their thinking? Do you know how to set a clear direction?

Our People Maestros care about people, strategy and results — a powerful combination when they’re influencing customers or colleagues to act on their suggestions. They get on well with people, and people like them, so communication and teamwork come naturally. People Maestros have the human touch.

INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY

We recognise that everyone is different and we value the unique differences that each of us brings to work every day. We want you to bring what makes you different too.

We offer a vast range of opportunities to apprentices, in an inclusive culture that aims to reflect the diversity of modern Britain.

We’ve been recognised for some significant achievements in this area — for instance, more than 30% of our senior jobs are held by women. Inclusion and diversity are woven through our purpose and our networks — and your development as an apprentice.

AGILE FUTURE FORUM A founding member of the forum, along with other leading employers, we promote agile working policies and practices to support you in finding the work–life balance that’s right for you.

ACCESS Our Access network connects and supports colleagues with disabilities. We have more than 3,000 members and run high-profile initiatives, including a national event, regular newsletters, a mentoring scheme and colleague development sessions.

We also host disability awareness sessions, signposting colleagues to sources of support and promoting wider Access activities

BREAKTHROUGH Our award-winning women’s network is now the largest of its kind in the UK with 13,000 members and 4,000 mentors. In 2015, Breakthrough held more than 50 events on career development, parenting and mentoring.

RAINBOW With more than 3,000 members and supporters, and an active Twitter following, our LGBT professional network connects, develops and supports LGBT colleagues across the Group.

In 2015, we ran our first national event, along with sessions about LGBT and faith, same-sex parenting and coming out. We also raised £10,000 for the Albert Kennedy Trust, an organisation that helps young homeless LGBT people.

REACH Our inclusive Group-wide network values and embraces the diversity of our racial, ethnic and cultural heritage — hence the acronym REACH.

We actively support our members through networking, mentoring and access to role models so that they can reach their full potential, and so that the values and diversity of our workforce reflect those of our customers.
