Ice Age: Collision Course
Fox's last two Ice Age movies each grossed more than $850 million globally. Repeating that type of performance would likely make Ice Age: Collision Course one of 2016's top-10 biggest films.

X-Men: Apocalypse
Fox's The Martian grossed roughly $580 million in 2015, a big win in an otherwise weak box office year for the company.

Fox's last X-Men movie did roughly $750 million in ticket sales, and X-Men: Apocalypse could benefit from franchise momentum.
Suicide Squad
With its ragtag team of comic book antiheroes, as well as Batman and The Joker, Suicide Squad has big box office potential. The picture from Warner Bros. opens August 20.

Independence Day: Resurgence
20 years after Independence Day grossed more than $800 million, Fox is betting that Independence Day: Resurgence can deliver out-of-this world returns and create an ongoing franchise.

Alice Through the Looking Glass
In 2010, Disney's Alice in Wonderland did over $1 billion in ticket sales.
Alice Through the Looking Glass, opens May 27, and will likely ride strong international ticket sales to a big box office total.

Captain America: Civil War

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
The eight movies in the Harry Potter series have done over $7.7 billion in global ticket sales. Fantastic Beasts should be able to conjure up some of that Potterverse magic when it hits screens on November 18.

Finding Dory
Viacom's Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation scored big with critics and grossed more than $680 million, a performance that has paved the way for more impossible missions on the big screen.

In 2003, Disney and Pixar's Finding Nemo grossed roughly $940 million. Finding Dory releases June 17, and should swim past the $1 billion mark.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already one of the biggest movies of all time, and series side-story Rogue One should also be a world-beater when it opens December 16.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Batman v Superman opens on March 18 and could get Time Warner's DC Movie Universe off to a massive start.

Which blockbuster will take top spot in 2016?
l All 10 of the movies on this list have big potential, but Rogue One and Batman v Superman probably have the best chances of taking 2016's top spot. Each film has big franchise appeal and built-up demand—elements that Finding Dory and Fantastic Beasts have working in their favor as well even if their explosive potential may be smaller.
l
l The concept of Batman battling Superman on the big screen has been tossed around for decades and teased to the point where the upcoming film has real event movie potential. Interest in Star Wars is red-hot after the release of The Force Awakens. Can DC Comics really top The Force?
l
l Predicting the year's top earner without knowing the quality of the films and marketing campaigns is difficult, but never bet against Batman.
