Introduction

Desktop virtualization has been around for many years and continues to show strong growth, with half of all survey respondents saying they plan to purchase it in 2016/2017, but do you need it? After surveying over 1,000 IT professionals, TechTarget Research has released findings on desktop virtualization purchases. This report will help you:

• Justify why you should purchase desktop virtualization

• Uncover which features do and don’t stand out when looking to purchase a desktop virtualization solution

• Discover what products your peers are buying to manage and monitor their desktop/virtualization environment

Over 1,000 IT professionals were interviewed to better understand desktop virtualization purchases. According to our respondents, two key motives stand above the rest for reasons to purchase desktop virtualization, namely simplifying management of hardware and software (63%), and saving money (49%). Other reasons are also a strong impetus to purchase desktop virtualization including increasing security of information (40%) and supporting mobile workers (27%). These key drivers remain the same regardless of a company’s size (see the following chart for details).

Approximately three out of four IT professionals we surveyed say that compatibility across all users and all devices is a critical feature they’re looking for in their next desktop virtualization purchase. This is by far the most important feature being sought, which makes sense when you consider that simpler management of hardware and software is one of the greatest motivators for desktop virtualization. The same pattern shows up when we analyze most valuable features – compatibility across all users and all devices is by far the top requirement.

Yet, other features are also quite important to IT professionals including profile management (40%), ability to work over a wide area network (37%), and ease of image management (33%). While these are important to all companies regardless of size, there appears to be more of a tendency the smaller a company is to feel that offline access is important. Although just 12% of companies with 25,000 or more employees feel this an important feature, 16% of companies with 1,000 to 24,999 employees say it is, and 20% of companies with fewer employees feel the same way.

The majority of our respondents indicate that they have no plans to purchase any additional products to manage and monitor their desktop virtualization environment. Yet, approximately 40% of companies with 1,000 or more employees do plan to purchase at least one type of product to help them with their desktop/virtualization management and monitoring. Moreover, approximately half of smaller organizations plan to do so as well (see the following chart for details).

With 50% of all respondents saying they plan to purchase desktop virtualization products in 2016/2017, it’s clear this technology continues to provide value to organizations. IT professionals looking for a reason to justify to management their next desktop virtualization purchase can look to their peers for several key reasons including simplifying management of hardware and software, saving money and increasing security of information. Furthermore, compatibility across all users and all devices is a key feature that all IT professionals should consider. And while most IT professionals don’t have plans to purchase any management and monitoring products for their desktop/virtualization environment, an IT professional should still at least consider whether it makes sense for their company given that 40% or more of our respondents do purchase at least some type of product for this purpose.
