“In todays climate, it is often difficult for production companies tofilm in the U.K. This is often due to red tape and a reluctance to permitfilming. This is particularly evident in London. Eastbourne Council provided anexcellent service, supplying everything that was required for the production in avery friendly and efficient manner. Where any problems were anticipated, theywere talked through in a logical manner, and a solution was found, somethingseverely lacking from many film liaison offices. The location itself is fantastic, wonderful beaches and surrounding architecture, largely unspoilt. A first classservice, which I would recommend to others in this field.

MedievalArchitectureSt Mary’s Church in Old Town is representative of the

Romanesque and Gothic style, stone built with round

and pointed arches. Buildings of this period are heavy

and solid, carrying an air of solemnity.

Although we know less of the town’s layout during the middle agesand medieval period we know that the Lamb Inn, reputed to be theoldest hostelry in Britain, and some nearby flint and timber-framedlocal houses with heavy mullioned windows date back to thethirteenth century.

As well as the properties arising from this period there are a numberof more recent developments indicative of this style such as theimposing Eastbourne College, the impressive Victorian buildings ofSt Saviour’s Church and All Saints Hospital and the 1920s builttudor-styled Park Close.

elegant Georgian property with sash windows and decorative pediments over the

Eastbourne’s heyday was in the Victorian period

with the building of the Pier and adjoining

promenade which saw the seaside town developed

with vigour, a model of early planning recognised by

town planners as a master of its genre.

Advancements in machine technology enabled

Victorian builders to mass produce ornamental

features such as brackets, spindles and

patterned tiles.

The development during the Victorian period saw a

new seaside town emerge with broad streets lined

with elegant stucco terraces. The elegant resort

attracted many tourists who enjoyed strolling along

the miles of seafront promenade which was built in

three levels and retains its unspoilt glory today.

The Meads residential area was laid out with tree lined streetsand large villas of picturesque design using red brick, flint, tilesand painted timber to decorative effect. By the end of the1880’s, this area stretched from the Western Promenade downto Devonshire Place, a central 80ft wide tree lined boulevard, and across to Compton Place itself, forming Eastbourne’s‘Belgravia’. The ‘high class’ character of the town wasmaintained by the Devonshire Estate and to this day shops arenot allowed on the seafront.

The Grand and Queen’s Hotels are two examples of Victorianelegance with Corinthian pilasters, stucco elevations and bolddetailing whilst the town’s ornate Devonshire Park Theatre and Winter Garden were the centre of the town’s renownedcultural life.

VictorianThe delightful Victorian provincial station is a mixture of medieval andclassical styles and is dominated by a fine clock tower and zinc coveredFrench pavilion style roof.

All Saint’s Convalescent Hospital, with its beautiful chapel, competes onlywith St. Saviours Church as being the most important example of Victorianarchitecture in the town. The building depicts fine examples of high VictorianGothic revival using polychrome effects of brick, stone, tile and glass.

In pride of place along the town’s Victorian seafront sits the Pier designedby Eugenius Birch, the most famous of the Victorian pier designers. The largest Camera Obscura in the UK is still in place on the pier.

The Edwardian era was a period of revivalism, taking ideas

from the medieval and Georgian periods, amongst others.

The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement meant that

vernacular traditions remained but new styles were adopted

such as international Art Nouveau influences.

The town features a range ofEdwardian architecture, much of it‘up market’ housing, but alsocommercial and ecclesiasticalbuilding. Caffyns Garage is adistinctive example influenced bythe architecture of the notedarchitect Richard Norman Shaw. An‘art nouveau’ shopfront in CornfieldTerrace, is a rare survival. As well as

Edwardian terraced streets, such as Elms Avenue, grand Hotels andEdwardian Mansions can also befound. The Chatsworth Hotel, remodelled in 1905, has retainedmuch of its Edwardian splendourwith its gilted period lift andtraditional reception – being originalfeatures making this a great locationfor filming set in the early 1900s.

Set in 1895, the UK period Drama‘Bramwell’ used the Edwardian builtChatsworth Hotel to film scenes from thehit TV show depicting Eleanor Bramwell’sdetermination to make her mark inmedical history.

During the 20 years between World War I and World War II the town’sdevelopment continued to focus it as a holiday resort. Parks and gardenswere laid out and the central bandstand was built. In order to accommodatethe town’s growing residential population both private and council housingestates were built in Old Town, Seaside and Hampden Park areas.

The impressive Hydro Hotel, known as the country house by the sea due toits award winning gardens and elevated sea views, actually opened its doorsin 1895 but has also been used as the backdrop for popular drama series‘Foyles War’ (pictured).

Inter War spanned the period between

the two world wars, continuing the

variety of styles but introducing the

functionalist style of Modernism and

its decorative counterpart ‘Art Deco’,

an example of this is the entrance to

the Hydro Hotel. Inter War with its

background in European modernism of

the 1920s and 1930s, eliminating the

applied historical ornamentation seen

in earlier periods.

“ We chose Eastbourne because of the variety ofdifferent period locations the town offers. As Foyle’sWar was located on the South Coast, Eastbourne wasthe ideal location. The Council’s Film Liaison Unitprovided a great service, especially in respect ofarranging parking and assisting us when we wereusing the seafront and I would love to come again.

NapoleonicThe fortress consists of 24 Casemates (bombproof vaulted chambers) sunk below groundlevel, the inner walls of which provide an opencircular parade ground. Above the Casematesis the gun platform with Embrasures(emplacements) for eleven 24 (later 32)pounder canons. We understand the need in some productionsfor the use of replica firearms, stunts andexplosions. This is only permitted with thecorrect supervision and if carried out with thehighest safety standards and is something ourFilm Liaison Unit can help procure.

Architects and designers have sought to make creations that stand as artisticstatements, while equally, fine artists have aspired to extend their practice toinfluence the whole environment, physical and conceptual, in which we live.Buildings and interiors have become artworks while exteriors havesometimes become home to the spontaneous environmental art of graffiti.

Eastbourne’s Sovereign Harbour is a vibrant modern development of townhouses, mansions and apartments many with boat berths whilst the moremodest social housing estate of Shinewater has been built up over the pastthirty years.

The town’s Congress Theatre was built during the 1960’s and provides multi-purpose seating able to cater for conferences and shows alike. A newCultural Centre adjoining this site will be opened to the public in 2007completing a unique cultural quarter, close to the seafront. In the second half of the twentieth century, perhaps more than

in any other, progressive ideas have cross-fertilized between

the fine and applied arts. The roots of this tendency can be

seen in Art Nouveau and in the Arts and Crafts tradition of

nineteenth-century England. An example of this is the new

Cultural Centre being built on the side of the Grade II listed

Congress Theatre.

Working in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and on a site

of Special Scientific Interest could be difficult but our Downland

Team have years of experience ensuring filming can take place

without damaging the environment. The highest chalk cliffs in

the country have huge appeal, however the very nature of chalk

can make it extremely dangerous to film near the edge. Risk

assessments and appropriate safety equipment have allowed

James Bond to be catapulted off the cliffs, Cate Blanchett to

stand on the edge in Notes on a Scandal and Sting to play his

guitar on this beautiful landscape.

“Excellent service supplied by the FilmLiaison Officer. Plenty of communication and awillingness to help when we had a problem withfilming in a certain location. The Downland Rangerwas informative and very helpful, without his helpand assistance the shoot would have taken longer.
